Barbie gets leather and fishnets

Barbie has always provoked strong emotions in some, but with the introduction of Bratz dolls, she seemed downright quaint. Well, she is quaint no more. With Mattel's September release of a doll based on the DC comic superhero Black Canary, Barbie is going to find herself back on the naughty girl list.
Clad in black thigh-high leather boots and gloves, fishnet stockings and a motorcycle jacket, this S&M Barbie is stirring more than little girls' imaginations. A spokesman for the religious group Christian Voice finds this sexed-up plaything to be just too much. "Barbie has always been on the tarty side and this is taking it too far. A children's doll in sexually suggestive clothing is irresponsible – it's filth."
I agree that perhaps this isn't Barbie's best look and wouldn't buy it for my kid. But that won't be a problem because she doesn't want Black Canary. When I showed her this photo and asked for her opinion, she looked aghast. "She's not wearing any pants!" she exclaimed. Good girl.

I just thought cool outfit. Being a collector now, I just appreciate these dolls as works of art instead of taking it so seriously of what damage it might do to the fragile psyche of the young mind.

Melinda said...My Barbie ALWAYS wore tinfoil dresses, smashed onto her so tightly that she had to 'hop' instead of walk. She wore straight pins pushed through her little rubber head for earrings.
This outfit is no different than Balerina Barbie, she doesn't have any pants on either, only this outfit is black instead of sissy pink.
Provacative dress is in the eye of the beholder. Remember during the sixties, Nancy Sinatra in the video 'These boots are made for walking'? Her and her back up dancers dressed in a very simular way, boots, fishnets, an extremely short dresses and that's been 40 years ago.
Most Barbies end up completely naked with their hair cut off before they are a month old anyway. Stop complaining, it only boosts sales for the company.

It is part of the Collector's line, in which, if I can recall correctly was made so older people can still enjoy Barbie.
either way, I think the doll is gorgeous and have heard about it months ago before this whole controversy and I'm still buying it.

I work with victims of assault and rape and I must tell you NO ONE gets raped for the way they look. Rape due to suggestive or sexy clothing is a myth, and one that dies hard. While such clothing may be tacky and immodest, it doesn't provoke rape, as professionals know well. Tell me a little old lady in her 80's wearing a house dress is provocative and sexy. They get raped too. So do little girls in overalls and teeshirts. Most victims look as if they will not cause trouble for the rapist, which is why they are picked in the first place. Check out the studies on this. There are many available. You don't need to visit a medical/forensic library. This Barbie is for adult collectors, not for kids. I am amazed that people canot tell the difference.

SP said...True. Rape is not always about sex, but when children are subjected to sexual items at too early of an age it literally rewires the brain. The message that this sends children is that it's not only okay to dress this way, but you should, in order to be accepted. Our media, in all forms is harming to our children.

No jacket, no stockings...just the bracelets, boots, and the one piece. The bikinis they put the Malibu Barbie or Beach Going Barbie or whatever they call it now have much less clothing than this outfit. Another thing to consider is this. Our children are exposed to far worse by females in music and movies than by dolls. Britney Spears in her One More Time video was the epitome to me of the trashy school girl stereotype. If you want your kids to have values THEN GIVE THEM SOME BY TALKING TO THEM! It's called being a parent.

The problem is not BUYING the doll, it's a child SEEING the doll and being shown these very sexual images at an age where the mind can be so easily altered is completely inappropriate. How would you all feel if your child found a photo of a real woman wearing soem very sexual clothes and looking suggestive? I imagine you'll have to explain why it is that the woman looks like that. And has it ever occured to you that just because something is SUPPOSED to be for collecting, that doesn't mean in any way that a child won't get it or want it. It doesn't matter what it was made for, children still see and want it. When I was a little girl, about 8+ years ago, Barbie was becoming a skank, honestly. But she still represented a strog, smart, and independent woman, who did EVERY job no matter what it was. Yes, she was also insanely attractive, and had completely unrealistic chest-to-body ratio, but rescently, she has been changed so that if she was a real woman, she would be a 32DD and have a 27 inch waist which is PHYSIOLOGICALLY IMPOSSIBLE. I have no problem with Barbie being pretty-it shows that women can be pretty AND smart-but it's a problem when you present this "perfect woman" to children who don't have the ability to understand that no one has to look like that, and this doll is no exception. And btw-I'm 16, so everyone who talks about how teenagers don't understand this concept-my friends and I all make FUN of Barbie. All you need to do is explain to your children that Barbie is a smart and strong woman, but that everyone is beautiful, even if they're not blonde and skinny with huge breasts. You should tell them that they are beautiful the way they are-and that they should never try to change that to suit some stupid expectation.

If a parent does not agree with the image of this doll, don't bitch about it. Just don't buy it. Problem solved.

Guess that's why HPV is in 1/3 of the young peoples population.
Come on, it's the year 2008! When are going to get a break from these stupid images of women? Any mom that would give that to her daughter needs a reality check.
And guys, who are commenting on Barbies outfits? Pahleeze, someone find me a real man!

I remember when I was younger, barbie dolls used to where nice clothes that didn't look really sexy at all. I mean the little kids don't care for the black canary but they are a lot of other barbie dolls that look very slutty that kids buy all the time.
All I am asking is don't have barbies have unreal image of what the little girls are supposed to look like. A kid that I babysit said barbies make her feel sad because she will never be like them.[:(

I can't tell you how many girls I know want to copy and look like the dolls that are out there. I have to agree that this doll is not good for little girls. It's bad enough that we have to look at so many raunchy things that girls are in today. Even walking by VS stores embarrasses me.

People are starting to make me crazy...they take everything as if it were something real and project all kinds of silliness on it. Pay attention to the home environment, NOW !
