DailyDish: Avoiding the lie down

Categories: Toddlers, Preschoolers, Sleep

Tired of having to lie down with your kid every night to get them to fall asleep? Try this trick instead.

Jared and Sara asleep in bedI've had to lie down with my kids at night and have woken up on the floor in their room more times than I care to remember. I didn't mind too much because I could always work on my laptop or my PDA. Still, it wasn't very conducive to a good night's sleep or, for that matter, any good for my back.

Lately, however, we've been using a new technique to avoid having to lie down with the kids. When they ask to have someone lie down with them, we tell them that we'll come check on them in five minutes. After five minutes, more or less, we check on them (if they're still awake) and tell them we'll check back in another five minutes.

By the second or third check, they're usually fast asleep and we're not too far behind. If your little ones want you to keep them company while they fall asleep, try offering to check on them instead -- your back will thank you.
