If you have ever seen a Reborn baby doll, then you know that they look for all the world like real babies. Reborns are popular with doll collectors as well as those who can't or don't want to have actual children. Some of these dolls come complete with beating hearts and an apparatus that makes them appear to breathe. Some of them, however, just lie there looking like real babies who aren't breathing. Like the one police in Australia saw when they peered into the window of an otherwise empty and locked automobile. Believing a child's life was in danger, the police smashed the window and rescued the doll.
This isn't the only case of police being fooled by a Reborn. A similar incident in the United States cost a man a window out of his brand new Hummer after his wife left her Reborn in his car.
I think if you are going to have a fake baby that looks so lifelike that people will break out your windows to rescue it, you might want to add a blanket to your fake diaper bag. That way, you will have something to throw over it when you leave it alone in the car.

Troy said...I make reborns also. Yeah, some of them look creepy, even some are creepy on purpose...with horns and fangs! I've made a few infants and now make toddlers and 4 yr olds. It's a hobby just like all the others out there and with the right buyer, it can be quite a lucrative hobby. http://www.hambly-funeral.com/reborns.html

Like a scuptor or painter, it takes a LOT of talent to make one of these look that realistic. It is an art, like any art, and you either like it or you do not. They are amazing creations. And why do people buy them....because they like them!!....why did people buy beanie babies??? or collect other things that might seem crazy to some people?? It is a hobby that is quite interesting. Check out my website for more photos
www.bitsybundlesnursery.com. They are definately not for everyone, but if you like babies, you'll love these!

Jean said...I make these reborn babies and they are wonderful...before you close the door on these adorable little ones try holding one...collectors love them and so do moms, kids and grandmoms. Yes get a cat, clean the box. I love making these babies and even more I love watching other people with them...Little girls love to play with dolls, big girls do to...and they cost much less than a jet ski or a hummer.

Andrea Hedgepeth said...I find it hard to imagine how a "DOLL" can be creepy???????????? When I was a little girl doll manufacturers, in their constant quest to be more and more realistic, made dolls who wet their pants, walked, talked and slept. It's a doll for goodness sake so get over it.

Fran said...Ok...i make these babies..and i have to say there is alot more to just what meets the eyes on these babies..each and everyone of us who reborn these sweeties are concidered Artists..some of these babies are kits made from molds from sculpters who have sculpted them from their own 2 hands then paid to have them poured into molds for the rest of us to create our own little bundles of joy...what we do is paint them many layers of permenant paints.. we root their heads to apear as if the hair is growing right out of their scalp..these babies will last not years but many generations..i'm sure to some of you's this sounds creepy..but have you ever held a reborn baby..Yes they do look and feel just like a baby..but they give comfort to some who can find no comfort...and each adopted parent of one of these babies adopts them for their own reasons..some are collectores some just need to fill a loss..some just love them..whatever the reason is we as reborners are proud and very glad to make these special babies for those who love and apriciate them...
Oh yea and as for taking these babies with you out in public, well i do that i take my babies to the stores and in the stores and in resturaunts..for those of us who do its the way we advertise them, so instead of looking at them and feeling embaressed for thinking they are real..why don't you come up to us and talk to us..hold the baby and see for yourself what the big deal is with these precious babies..don't be scared...they don't bite...
and for the ladies who do leave them in their cars..please put your card on them or a sign sayin your nursery name and that they are a reborn baby....

Willow Dawn said...Reborn Babies are one of the hottest collectible dolls out on the market today. Each baby is created to look like a real life baby.
This is an Artform. I have had many Mothers email me, asking to have a baby made that looked like her own children did as a baby.
We try to match up the picture with one of the many doll sculpts out there that are done in vinyl to achieve this. Then there are others that just want a newborn baby to add to their collection.
These babies are really a piece of Art that you can hold and not just look at as you would a portrait.

It would seem that I'm not the only one bewildered by your random hostility and censorship. Your 'hood isn't the only place this is being discussed. Looks like you've ticked off lots of people, though I'm pleased you'd like to give me credit.

Rizzo said...I can appreciate both sides. I am a reborn artist, and can say, with out a shred of indignation, guilt, or remorse, yeah, it can be creepy, much in the same was taxidermy can be creepy. That's not a value judgment against those that enjoy/collect the craft, nor is it a value judgment against those that find it creepy.
The tone of this thread is amusing, though.
"ew, it's gross, people must be really f*cked in the head to collect these dolls."
"No it is not GROSS, it's a lovely, touching art, let me hurry up and pimp my website so you can buy some creepy therapy from ME!"

Patty said...Ya better believe it...at least on my website people can see they are not creepy that they are beautiful works of art.
The only doll they see in the article is that womans..and her interview.
Dolls wih beating hearts and heat apparatus are a very small percentage of the reborns out there as are people trying to replace a child they lost or can not conceive.
I guess there is always going to be someone to see things in their own distorted way.
I love reborning and I have worked very hard to perfect and promote the art.

Nancy said...I am a reborn artist also and these are collector items purchased mainly by people who like dolls. The realism is our goal when creating one of these babies, so if it creeps you out because it's so realistic - good for us - we succeeded!
Do I drive around with my dolls - yes, because I sell at doll shows but always make sure they are concealed when I leave my car. It is never my intent to deceive anyone into thinking that they are real babies.

I am a reborn Artist. I paint on vinyl, just as some paint on canvas. I like collecting dolls, just as some do beanie babies, coins, pez dispensers etc.
I have sold babies all over the world and never to someone who "couldn't have a baby". People that do not understand this art form tend to portray it as being 'creepy". In actuality, only about 1% of reborn dolls have heartbeats and breathing apparatus's. There is probably less than 5% that collect them because they can't have babies of their own.
'
Most people buy these dolls to collect. They do no go around carrying them in the stores and cars, trying to replace a real baby.
Perhaps most of you should do some research before passing judgement. A lot of time and talent goes into producing these babies. Feel free to check out my website. I explain in detail how each one is made and lot of pictures. WWW.terristinytots.com

Margie said...I'm a doll collector and I'm also a reborn artist. I've been doing this about 6 years and have taken my babies out in public many times as a marketing tool. Because people are so amazed and tickled with them, it's fun to watch. I rarely get a rude reaction. They look so real that I sometimes have to do something outrageous, like hand a very premature infant to a stranger to hold for a minute or lay the baby down in a dangerous position to get the attention I am seeking. I intentionally trick people into thinking they are real, then confess that they are looking at a doll, then hand them my business card.
I have used a doll to get into the carpool lane but I never leave a doll uncovered in a parked car. These stories have been around since the beginning of reborning and most of us know better.
I have made special order memorial dolls but most non-doll collectors want them as a 3-D memento of grown children or grandchildren. Often they dress them in treasured outgrown baby clothes instead of leaving those clothes packed away to be discovered by future generations and sold on Ebay. The dolls are not alive and cannot return affection. I do not market them as such. They are simply works of art that you can pick up and handle, as opposed to hanging on the wall or sticking into a curio.
