Contraception is abortion says Bush administration
Filed under: Your Pregnancy, Sex
According to the definition of abortion contained in a new proposal -- "any of the various procedures -- including the prescription, dispensing and administration of any drug or the performance of any procedure or any other action -- that results in the termination of the life of a human being in utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation" -- birth control pills would be considered abortion. The proposal, still in draft form only, is intended to prevent any organization that receives funding from the Department of Health and Human Services -- including hospitals, clinics, and medical schools -- from refusing to hire doctors that are unwilling to perform abortions or provide contraception, even when that is part of the job. Mary Jane Gallagher, who heads the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association, worries "that under the proposal, contraceptive services would become less available to low-income and uninsured women."
Naturally, there is a lot of outcry over the proposal. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi says that, if enacted, the proposal "will launch a dangerous assault on women's health." While I don't think the new and expanded definition of abortion would include abstinence as some have joked, I do think it is pretty ridiculous.

With the ongoing little war in Iraq, the impending recession, The Patriot Act, the ridiculous "no child left behind" & Christian-based abstinence education policies, I'm sure it's just a matter of time before Roe vs. Wade gets overturned.
I really don't want the government telling me what I can or can't do with my body... contraception, right to get a safe, legal abortion or otherwise! Interesting that there's no proposed ban on condoms for men...

I feel that birth control is completely up to the women, however a women wants to prevent birth. And the only reason the government should step in to regulate birth control is to protect women from harmful side effects, they should have no say in what type of birth control is allowed. Especially regulation based on religious beliefs of the government in power.

Selfish, selfish society we have become. And we speak of our selfish demands as if they were so moral and prudent. Sick.

You are misleading people into believing that "contraception" includes termination of a conceived life. Encouraging people to believe there is no distinction, indeed can be none, between preventing conception and terminating a conceived life. Not surprising for you, but I thought I'd point that out for readers that aren't paying enough attention. Some of us feel there is a clear distinction.
I happen to agree that any manner of terminating a conceived, unborn human is abortion. And that pro-life doctors (and med students) should not be subject to discrimination or forced to do what is unconscionable to them. Do you believe everyone with a certain set of morals, that does't harm anyone, should be excluded from the medical field? Why not come right out and say it then?

Woman that was raped and got pregnant will be left with no option but to stay pregnant. I believed there was separation between Church and the Goverment. Since when the president of the USA makes this kind of decisions. Birt Control is not Abortion, its retarded to even suggest that, Birth Control prevents Abortion. As a result of using B C women dont get pregnant and dont have to face a difficult decision, like to have or not to have an Abortion. Get Real Mr. President
