Amanda Peet says she's sorry - Sincere apology, or just damage control?
Filed under: Health & Safety: Babies, Life & Style, Celeb Parents
After Amanda Peet made quite a stir in this month's Cookie magazine with her comparison of parent's who don't vaccinate their kids to "parasites" she offered an apology.
"I believe in my heart that my use of the word 'parasites' was mean and divisive," Peet writes. "I completely understand why it offended some parents, and in particular, parents of children with autism who feel that vaccines caused their illness. For this I am truly sorry. Since my mom has Parkinson's Disease, I know what it feels like to want a concrete cause, and a concrete cure, as soon as possible."
But she then proceeds to reiterate her stance: that the only way to go, is pro vaccine, and that anyone who thinks there is a link between autism and vaccines are misinformed.
Of course, she has a point, and some hard facts to back her up. But... a fear of an increased risk of autism isn't the only reason parents who don't vaccinate their kids, don't. And many parents who get lumped into the category of 'anti-vaccination' are actually just altering their child's vaccination schedule so as to avoid over-taxing of the immune system that occurs when multiple vaccinations are given at the same time. Yet Peet claims these parents are believers in a "fringe" theory--likening their beliefs to those who still claim that HIV is a government conspiracy.
What do you think of Amanda Peet's apology? Is it sincere or just damage control?

Sinuous said...She's a "star" and so people listen to what she says because of what?! I'm so sick and tired of people thinking that these people know more than they, they are better informed, blah blah blah...they don't and aren't. We have access to a lot of information out there whether it be on this issue, politics, religion and most of the time are better rounded and informed just because we aren't one of these self-pontificating boors.

She should of been much more respectful and a little tact couldn't of hurt either. We have freedom of choice. I see nothing wrong with parents who choose to wait. I didn't. I trust my pediatrician who thus far has done a bang up job. Above all I trust my instincts.
Every parent needs to do what they feel is right for THEIR children. Honestly, choosing to vaccinate or not can both lead to issues with babies and children. So you know what, it's almost a toss up. It all boils down to the child. You can only do your best.
As far as her 'apology.' She doesn't need to apologize for her view point but she does need to apologize for how careless she was with other peoples feelings. Do I believe her 'damage control?' Not really. You can see at the very end she was still very much hostile about the whole idea.

Midnight In Chicago does it with their Autism Spectrum Podcasts at www.mic.mypodcast.com where people can hear the "Autism and Vaccines: Parts I & II" podcasts.
The podcasts quote sources which may be much more accurate than Ms. McCarthy's opinion.
MIC also has the "Countdown to Midnight" CD that sends proceeds to reputable autism charities.
Spread the word. It is important we get the FACTS out on autism.

If that wasn't the case, following the removal of thimoseral from vaccines in 2001, there should have been an associated decrease in ASD (autism spectral disorder) cases and that is not the case.
I don't think her use of "parasites" was unreasonable at all - parents who want to enjoy the benefits of herd immunity without exposing their children to the supposed risks are just that - parasites. Making the decision to withhold vaccines from your child in spite of sound scientific and medical advise is not only irresponsible to society and abusive to your child.
