Disney underpants cause a stir
Filed under: In The News, Playground Bureau, Weird But True
It doesn't take a lot of foresight to realize the list of acceptable words or phrases acceptable to print on little girl underpants is very short. But apparently the people involved in the production of Disney High School Musical panties either lack the skill of looking ahead or just aren't very bright when it comes to double entrendre.
A British woman bought a pack of High School Musical underpants for her seven-year-old granddaughter was appalled to find the words "Dive In" on one of pairs.
"I was extremely shocked when I saw what was on them and I don't believe Disney or anyone else is so stupid not to realize the implications of the wording they chose." said Sue Ralph who said she would never have made the purchase if the phrase had been visible through the packaging.
A Disney spokesperson: 'The knickers in question were designed using our High School Musical 2 artwork, which uses the creative theme of a swimming pool, as this is a key part of the film's storyline. Unfortunately a genuine oversight was made and the text on this product was used outside the context of the swimming pool. This product will not be part of any forthcoming collections."
While it's good to hear that the number of High School Musical fans wearing "Dive In!" panties will be limited, I still think it's a bit far-fetched that THAT many people could be that clueless. Sounds like what the Disney product development team really needs is the addition of parents with common sense to help them out.

HOWEVER, I am not so confident that the designers of these underpants didnt have some sort of sick humor going into them. Why? For those who dont remember the stir that went on with The Lion King and the original VHS packaging for The Little Mermaid--this is not the first time that Disney has been accused of having sexually suggestive material in the products--whether it be on a movie or packaging. I will give some examples and you will see that these are less than isolated events and potentially give rise to concern for the motives and intent of the designers at Disney.
Exhibit 1: The Lion King--during the part that Simba plumps down on the edge of a mountain, the dust that waffs up and goes into the air somehow are able to formulate into the word "sex" Now why would that be appropriate? If you think that I looked to hard to find something, it was on the news some time back and they did a slo-mo shot of that scene and it was unmistakable.
Exhibit 2: The VHS packaging of The Little Mermaid--also on the news. But is there a reason why Ariel's castle "under the sea" have towers that look like gigantic phallus'? If you have a copy of this VHS at home, take it out and look. Im sorry, but being well aware of a penis looks like its hard to tell the difference with the detail to the "top" of the towers in the packaging.
and...
Exhibit 3: A scene in Aladdin where the sultan would appear to be "sexually aroused" with the sudden change in the look of his pants. This only happens once and the rest of the movie that shows his entire body (being as short as he is), there is no sign of excitement in his pants.
So from those 3 examples it could still be argued that adults are just looking for an excuse to stir controversey and assme that there was no forethought and that Disney is just as innocent as Snow White. But the fact that Disney has been caught under this same sort of controversey before over the years.
While 5 year olds would not think of sexual things, its hard to imagine why then, these incidents keep happening and they are all evident in things that innocent kids are supposed to enjoy. Parents should be able to relish the innocence of their kids for as long as possible in this very "adult" world that is obsessed with sex. But with these things continually popping up, Im sorry but I am not so convinced that this is just an "isolated incident." I believe someone (s) at Disney are having a shortlived laugh, but a laugh nonetheless.

Do you really want to support a company making billions, who are supposedly child-friendly....all the while having pictures of penises on video covers, hiring a convicted & known child molester as a director for a movie, and now this, and I'm sure the list could go on. So to all of you who say this has to stop--you're damned right it has to--DISNEY has to stop seeing kids as only greenbacks and start respecting their innocence and dignity!
In summary: It doesn't matter who does or does not see the underwear. It matters that a kid oriented company would even think of putting that on girls' underwear!

Our daughters are taught to dress like tarts from a very early age. Unfortunately, many of their mothers and fathers allow their 7 year old children to dictate their choices. They are more worried about being their children's best friend, afraid to be their best parent.

Brad said...You know, it's pitiful that peoples minds automatically think something perverted. Dive in means just that! Dive in the pool! It's the people complaining that make me sick. Who cares what these friggin underwear say? If that woman's mind didn't automatically go straight to thinking the perverted thing, their wouldn't be a problem! Get a life & quit worrying about what a pair of underwear says! Do something constructive like feed a homeless person or help out a charity! Jeez! Friggin perverts!!

Karen said...I happen to know from a terrible experience in our family that pedophiles LOVE to buy little girls' underwear, either to fantasize with (UGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!) or to give as a "special gift - a SECRET just between you and me - you are a SPECIAL GIRL!" - these would be absolutely perfect, would look totally innocent to the little girl. There are way too many naive people posting on here - there are literally 100's of millions of pedophiles in the world - WHY, I will never know, but it is a fact. And they think their numbers merit "rights."

But in reality there are a lot of perverts out there and parent have think about stuff like that. We can all pretend we live in a world where stuff like that doesn't happen, or would never happen to your kids, but it does.
You might go to the store and see a cute little kid bikini and think my kid would love that, but when you go to the beach some perv is looking at it in a completely different way.
Its not fair to kids, and it definitely isn't right, but we have to look at stuff like this and get rid of it if its not child appropriate. We're the adults, kids don't understand so they can't make the distinctions or decisions.

Karen Shea said...Aimee, no, you are not wrong at all - no one but the girl and her parents should ever see her underpants ever. Or maybe her best friend on a sleepover. And there should not be child pornography and there should not be child abuse and there should not be child neglect. There should be no wars, no starvation, no genocide... get real.

Perhaps the adult should get her mind out of the gutter and remember that, for a while at least, some kids are innocent.

Why on Earth anyone let their little girl wear these trashy things is beyond me.

Joey said...Honestly, if adults, especially parents would stop spending so much time perpetuating their own paranoia, they might just be betetr parents. The pedophiles they are so afraid of are probably counting on teh moronic behavior of parents who see "sex" in everything because tehy are so busy making a stink about nothing and forget to just be a parent to their own kids.
I saw teh underpants in question and it made me think of swimming. Dumb me, I took it lterally and forgot that there is a hidden evil message ine verything Disney makes for the kids...
Sorry - I just think it is patheic "clueless" parental behavior.

I love everything they do, but you have to admit that they have a few upstarts at the company thinking it's cool and hip to introduce the pre pubescent group to sexuality! HELLO!!! Should these dumb young things ever have children of their own, I hope for the sake of the future that they will have more moral sense than their imbecilic parents.
