Disney underpants cause a stir
Filed under: In The News, Playground Bureau, Weird But True
It doesn't take a lot of foresight to realize the list of acceptable words or phrases acceptable to print on little girl underpants is very short. But apparently the people involved in the production of Disney High School Musical panties either lack the skill of looking ahead or just aren't very bright when it comes to double entrendre.
A British woman bought a pack of High School Musical underpants for her seven-year-old granddaughter was appalled to find the words "Dive In" on one of pairs.
"I was extremely shocked when I saw what was on them and I don't believe Disney or anyone else is so stupid not to realize the implications of the wording they chose." said Sue Ralph who said she would never have made the purchase if the phrase had been visible through the packaging.
A Disney spokesperson: 'The knickers in question were designed using our High School Musical 2 artwork, which uses the creative theme of a swimming pool, as this is a key part of the film's storyline. Unfortunately a genuine oversight was made and the text on this product was used outside the context of the swimming pool. This product will not be part of any forthcoming collections."
While it's good to hear that the number of High School Musical fans wearing "Dive In!" panties will be limited, I still think it's a bit far-fetched that THAT many people could be that clueless. Sounds like what the Disney product development team really needs is the addition of parents with common sense to help them out.

Callie said...When I was the age they are targeting, my panties were plain colors or stripes, there were no words. I don't see any difference in the phrase on these and ones that say "Super". Everything can be taken out of context. Most are saying that it is inviting a pedophile, I think if a pedophile is after your child he doesn't care what her undies say.

The phraze "dive in" would only be approved by someone without children, an immature manager or a pig. This had to be approved by someone on the "management team"...my guess is it is an immature manager.

Sharon said...Disney needs to take a proactive approach to preventing the media's sexualization of our young girls. Between Bratz dolls, the everlasting "Barbie" image, anorexia etc. our girls grow up feeling the only value they have is in their bodies and allowing themselves to be victimized. Clothes manufacturers are promoting push up bras and thongs to 8 year olds!! There's even a company out there selling pink "pole dancing kits" complete with garters and fake money - that demographic? 6 year olds!!! Good book to read about all of this - "The Lolita Effect" - It's shocking what we sit back and become numb to and our young girls are paying the price.

Kayla said...Honestly? High School Musical UNDERWEAR?!?!?!?!?! Haven't they taken these movies a LITTLE too far?
As for the message on them, probably a oversight. The creaters probably didn't even think about any double meanings, they just thought kids would like it! Disney recalls the undies, problem solved.

DSE said...I don't think the issue is just who might read the undies. The message is sent to the child who is wearing them. She will read the words "dive in" and while it may seem "innocent" I think the message is viewed as "ok." It sets kids up to take this kind of message in stride, but as the hormones kick in, some kids do use this kind of talk to sexualize things. It just isn't a good idea.
I remember several years ago ... my sister-in-law was wearing "Guess" on her t-shirt. My husband said to her "34B?" ... My dad just laughed because he said that people who wear stuff like that are begging to be "noticed" but offended when they are ... Our whole society needs to just grow up. A 30 year old woman should know better, but we are training them early.

beings keep their mind on sex or in the gutter. It was an honest
mistake - their mind wasn't in the gutter or thinking about sex all
the time like the majority of human beings.

Satanlka said...How about another option, leave them on the shelf and buy your kid the white cotton panties that are the source of all pedophiles dreams. Grow up, you don't need to complain about every dang thing, Vote with your wallet and move on. All you alarmist parents are just going to raise wild teens that want to try everything their mommies never let them do! Some common sense people and your dirty minds!

Amy said...If you take a look around the little girls' underwear department in most popular stores these "inappropriate" Disney panties would not surprise you. They are trying to sell skimpy bikini panties and padded push-up bras to pre-teens. And yes, I understand all about kids being curious about the things their parents make a big fuss over, so I try very hard not to. But honestly, it is sometimes a nightmare shopping with my 12 and 10 year olds because the age appropriate clothing seems to be far out-numbered by the skanky stuff.

Then by all means, let's not let our 7 year old girls eat bananas.
They might get the wrong idea.

something perverse, and often sexual.... i stopped buying anything disney years ago.... when the kids were younger, it was up to me not them to keep an eye on what tv and movies were watched.... now that they are young adults, they make their own choices..... and seem to be much better at it than the avg.
