Kindergarten party raided

When the police in Auckland, New Zealand were called to shut down a loud party last Friday, they probably expected that the party-goers would be a bunch of kids. What they probably didn't expect is that the kids would all be about five years old. But that is exactly what they found when they responded to a complaint made by what can only be described as a cranky neighbor.
The One Tree Hill Kindergarten was in the midst of their annual disco party, rocking out to Bob the Builder and the Chicken Dance when noise control officials arrived on the scene around 6:30 pm. Teacher Jenny Skerritt said the officials seemed a bit "red faced" as they ordered them to turn it down or shut it down. "I don't think it was that ragey, but it's all a matter of perspective I guess," she said.
Perspective, indeed. The babies sleeping in the very next room obviously didn't think it was too loud. Nevertheless, they turned the music down and continued with their party. And just for kicks, they plan to frame that noise abatement notice for all to see.

We bought this house 3 years ago and have done a TON of work on it, including building a very nice deck in the back. I am a med student and therefore must spend several hours per day studying quietly. I think you can guess where this is going. 3 houses down lives a family that must know nothing of birth control because they have at least 5 kids and discipline none of them. Their idea of parenting is buying a trampoline for the backyard and ushering the kids out to it whenever they are home.
I think it is great that the kids play outside. What I don't like is that they are incapable of playing without screaming, at the top of their lungs every 3 seconds as if they were having a contest to see who could make my ears bleed first. Do the parents ever come out and, well, PARENT? No. Of course not.
So now on any nice day (which is when I would use it) I cannot study on my deck that we built specifically for this purpose. It has gotten to the point that I cannot study in the HOUSE half the time either, even with all the windows down (and we bought all new windows last year). I often feel as though I am being kept prisoner by bad parenting. Playing outside is great, but it can be done without screaming! These kids need to be taught that screaming at the top of their lungs isn't appropriate behavior!
One day this summer when I was studying for the first board exam, I did call the police. I don't know if they came or not. I suppose I could have walked down and asked them to be quiet, but I can assure you there is NO WAY the mother (if she's even there) doesn't know how loud they are. I don't have time to waste arguing with someone either, most of the time I'm on a strict schedule, and when this is going on I'm already very behind. I assure you I spent hours trying to ignore it before I finally called.
Whether you agree or not, my neighborhood has a noise ordinance which the kids were violating. The noise ordinance exists so that all the neighbors can live together. When my dogs are barking I get up off my couch, walk outside, and reprimand them. Do the same thing with your kids- just because you don't have anything to do but watch daytime soaps doesn't mean the rest of us are idle as well.
Before you accuse me of hating kids, or never being a kid, or whatever you guys pull out of your hat when someone doesn't find your child as adorable as you do, I was a kid. I lived on a farm, with no visible neighbors. I had ALL KINDS of fun. My mother would not have allowed me to make this sort of noise because she was shaping my behavior so I would act appropriately in public situations and later as an adult. I'm thankful for her parenting. Perhaps some other mothers out there could take a lesson from her.

It never does but I also understand that I live in a neighborhood where my neighbors on each side are less than 20 feet away and there are kids throughout the neighborhood and there is going to be noise.

If they try to fire the gun with the butt in the air like that, it will smack them right in the jaw and they will miss their target. Hope I'm there when it happens

momof4 said...I find this very funny. Some cranky person complained. If you live that close to a school, daycare, preschool, etc. Anything that hosts children then you will hear a lot of noise. What did they think just because they live near a school it would be quit. It would be one thing if it was 100:30p.m at night and your neighbor that lives in the apartment above u is blasting his sorry music then yeah that is being rude. A bunch of children playing "Bob the Builder" music at 6:30 p.m isn't. It must have been an old man or just a really mean A-hole. Who complains about music being played at 6:30 in the evening. If that is the case stay away from the early bird dinner specials and go out for dinner at 6:30pm dude.

You are a D.J. and you'd complain about your neighbor playing their music to loud at 6:30pm when you blast music near residental areas much later at night. That don't make much sense does it. It is a little bit ruder when it is 11:30pm and your having a loud party next door as to compare to 6:30pm with a bunch of toddlers. Come on, give me a break. Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

VRArndt82 said...I agree with you to a degree. Play music loud after dark is rude, but if it is 6:30pm I don't have a problem with it. Playing loud music (or instruments,) at 8:00pm is rude or really early in the morning. I say play is from 10-7, anything before or after is just disrepectful.

Requardless if I can hear your noise in my home, it is to loud. I would have called once to tell them to cut the volume, then turned on the sprinkler system

My oldest daughter was in the intensive care nursery for 4 weeks after she was born (she was 6 weeks early and had some other medical issues because of that) and THE NURSERY had music playing AT ALL TIMES because they wanted the babies to become used to noise so that they didn't wake up if someone spoke in the same room.
Secondly, I personally think that "bumping" is ignorant to begin with. I remember when I was younger, cranking up my car stereo to a good song(or songs) but at least you COULD UNDERSTAND WHAT SONG WAS PLAYING and the people in the car next to me didn't have to have the metal in their cars vibrate as well. Besides, most people who "bump" don't realize that even though they are TRYING to impress others with how awesome their stereo is, the sound of the car rattling does NOT impress.
Finally, if it was 6:30 in the evening, the neighbor should have just dealt with it. I wonder how many times that neighbor ran his lawn mower or leaf blower or whatever other combustable engine equipment he owns during nap time?
