Dora the Explorer getting a makeover?
Filed under: Toddlers Preschoolers, Preschoolers, Big Kids, In The News, Media
Dora the Explorer may be one of Nickelodeon's most popular characters, but she's no Hannah Montana. Some of us would say that's a good thing, since she is designed to appeal to much younger audience. But, according to a source, the powers that be over at Nickelodeon want to give the bilingual cutie a makeover in an attempt to draw in the older kids.First up for the Dora transformation is a new, feminine look. Maybe put her in a skirt and fix her hair up a little? Add some bows to the backpack and color the map pink? Next, get the girl some human friends. The source says they are considering adding a group of "Explorer Girls" to the animated cast. If these Explorer Girls follow the typical kid's show formula, you can expect a smart one, a pretty one and maybe a prissy one who doesn't like to get dirty.
If all that goes well, Dora may soon find herself featured on the big screen. Nickelodeon isn't commenting, but the source says they are considering a full-length feature film featuring Dora as an older kid. "Dora is as popular as she's ever been, and now has a second generation of viewers that we would love to serve," the company said.
I sure hope they don't ruin Dora. Sure, my 7-year-old has zero interest in that "baby show" now, but she loved it when she was younger. As do lots of little kids today. Does everything have to be about appealing to the tween audience these days?

Mel said...Having a show that my 3 year old loves is great! I don't want to tell her she can't watch her favorite show anymore because of Dora's new set of friends and the things they're doing. Besides, isn't the show made for kids who are learning new words/ideas/things??? And I don't mean how to correctly apply their lip gloss!

The little ones don't ask for so much.
I think Dora is a great cartoon as is and its sad that it all has to be about money. And grooming little girls into "buying" the importance of looks instead of what really matters.
I can't stand Disney and their barbidoll models, why do they have to poison children's minds to make a buck?? sick!

london said...nick can claim they are interested in early childhood development but sadly as ususl it's about the money. our 4 year old loves dora and she loves going to nick jr. and noggin online to play the games and to watch episodes of the different shows but when we signed on the other day we were met with ads from target and other places and all most everything( games, activites etc.) was gone from the sites. each time you would click on something an ad would play first. there were never any ads at either site before but now there are new sites that require a monthly fee to access just like the disney site for kids. nick and disney are just not satisifed with money revenued by the shows.new dora ,new merchandise possibilites. and of course everyone is right, no pre teen child will be interested.

Kelly said...It makes me so mad when they do this kind of thing. My 2 1/2 year old loves Dora just the way she is. It is easy for the younger kids to relate to her. What are they supposed to do now? There's really no other show for them to watch that doesn't have sexual innuendo, or at least adult situations, slathered all through it. I just don't understand why Hollywood, or whomever the powers that be are, why can't they just leave well-enough alone???

My 3 yr. old adores Dora and if these changes are made to her then I'm not going to allow her to watch it anymore. How will parents of little ones explain where the "real" Dora went to? When Dora was invented what was the target age or group if it was infants-preschoolers then leave it as such. Nickelodeon this will be a bad move and I don't think the show will survive if you transform Dora into this pre-teen. Not only this but there are going to be alot of unhappy toddlers and parents!! Everyone should petition for the show to remain just as it is.

jbj said...Will millions in sponsorship and merchandising ever be enough for some people? The "Explorer Girls?" Bet they will look alot like the Bratz girls which I won't let my kids watch 'cause they look like mini prostitutes. As for Dora, well, it's okay for kids to look and act like kids in cartoons, Nickelodeon. The only problem I have with the above program, Handy Manny and Diego is that they are blatant at trying to teach our kids Spanish. Wonder why???
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Dora is a good show and she doesn't have a smart mouth, has on plenty of clothes and I would recommend the show. Problem is, parents let their children watch TOO much TV and don't seem to care what they watch. LEAVE DORA ALONE!!!

Daniel Martinez said...This is a terrible idea. Nickelodeon already earned its bad reputation when Baby Spears got pregnant. But to change a character's image? Just stick with what you have. Kids love Dora for Dora the Explorer! Not some pimped out preteen assembled for the sake of getting ratings to a television channel whose trying to tie with Disney and Cartoon Network. It's not going to work. It's just going to sink and take the entire Nickelodeon channel along with it. The only kids' channel without a bad reputation is Cartoon Network.

Paul Cyopick said...The girl is 16! I'm sure everyone did silly things at 16. As for porn, excuse me? The Vanity fair pics were very classy, done by one of the world's greatest photographers. And the "shower shots" she was wearing a t-shirt OVER a bathing suit. Porn? I think not. Give the gal a break for acting her age.
As for Dora, my girls, 5, watch it a lot. The makers of the show are expert marketers, and will decide what's best to sell you more stuff, not necessarily what is best for the show. I know my kids have a ton of Dora (and hannah) toys.

However, with regard to updating any child or toddler is kinda pointless. They love them the way they are-if they are turning to HM then they are to old for Dora.

Vicki McConnell said...I agree--leave Dora alone. You can create a whole new series if you want with the same premise but very young children adore her AS SHE IS. It's just a shame the Nickelodeon wants to make more money and can't come up with a better solution.

What is there to improve on? Dora is an extremely successful animated TV show for small children.
Let's look to the classics that have been around forever, did Mickey Mouse pierce his ears and get a tattoo to get with the times?
Are they kidding, I have had a hard enough time trying to find something age appropriate and still innocent for my child. The bling bling wearing sassy mouthed characters that may be out there for the older kids have no place in the preschool aged television scene.
PLEASE! Let Dora run and jump with her sneakers on, leave the high heels for the Bratz (Babies??????).
It is bad enough with some of the attitude, vocabulary and topics in the older childrens shows.
KEEP IT YOUNG AND APPROPRIATE.
"CAN YOU SAY ABSOLUTAMENTE NO?"
