Girls kissing girls - and liking it?

Perhaps you have heard of Katy Perry, an up and coming young singer who is working hard to shock and alarm parents while positioning herself as the anti-Miley Cyrus. A former Christian music singer, Perry is now getting all kids of attention for a song she wrote called I Kissed a Girl. I haven't heard the song, but a quick read of the lyrics indicates that the tune is about alcohol and lost inhibitions. Specifically, a girl getting drunk and kissing another girl. And liking it. A sample:The taste of her cherry chap stick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it,
Perry's fans may be teens, but a lot of parents are freaked by the song, claiming it promotes homosexuality and promiscuity. Even Perry's own parents say they are disappointed in their 23-year-old daughter and find the song "shameful and disgusting."
But Perry has made it quite clear that she has no interest in being a role model for the young people who listen to her music. "Being in the business of rock and roll means having an attitude, being sexy, being edgy and being unapologetic unless I do something wrong...I look up to people like Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Freddie Mercury and Cyndi Lauper. I want to have that same type of appeal. If people want a role model, they can have Miley Cyrus."
Miley Cyrus and her poor choices aside, I don't think every young artist has a responsibility to be a role model for the entire youth population. That said, I don't really understand the controversy surrounding this song. She got drunk, she kissed a girl. The takeaway - at least for me - is that drinking makes you do things you wouldn't otherwise do. Maybe that is the point kids should be getting.

Marcia said...I like her song. You can find it on YouTube. It has a nice beat. Who cares if she kissed another girl? Have you seen MTV? The Real World girls ALL kiss other girls at the bars. Some of my younger cousins like this song and their parents are grossed out. It's just a song.

Karen said...I used to get really mad about faux lesbians like this, but recently I had a little bit of an epiphany. In our society, women are so often presented as sexuality incarnate that even girls who don't have a leaning toward homosexuality or bisexuality respond to it. As in this song, it's not that these girls are actually interested in the nitty-gritty; they just want to participate in the social activity of objectifying women.

Jason said...I'm so offended, not. Seriously - I have never heard any of Miley Circuses songs or this chick for that matter and could care less. But if you get up tight about a girl referencing kissing another girl in a song then you probably have been living in a cave or are probably dressed in some drapes and shacking up with Warren Jeffs somewhere.
Most girls do this for attention, look how much its generated already. Remember Britney?
I say embrace the hot girl kiss (as long as their of age) don't shun it. Anyway no - I don't have a daughter - not yet anyway, I'm one month away. And no I don't want her to be a lesibian. And yes I'm full of double standards. :)
Point is, lighten up and enjoy!

It's a song with a catchy beat, she has no responsibility to be a role model. I'm sure she got into Rock for the glam and money and she doesn't care about how she makes just that she makes money. the same can be said for Howard Stern or even Bill O'Reilly (he is to profane for even me to watch let alone my 1 year old son).
If you don't like it don't let your kids listen to it and you yourself can tune the song out as well.

pbhj said...It's a catchy tune - the song peaks on the lyric "i kissed a girl and i like it". The message is pretty clear "if you're a teen girl, kissing girls is fun". At no point does she say she's drunk - in fact it's clear from "Just wanna try you on, I'm curious for you" that it's an act of will and not of drunkeness.
So the fuss, Ms. Maple (as if you didn't know, working as you do for a media conglomerate), is that the song is encouraging teen girls (the target market) to dabble in lesbianism. And not because anyone at the record company things they need liberating, but just to sell a few more records.
If none of that bothers you perhaps the cheating on her boyfriend or the implicit suggestion that having sexual liaisons with people whose name you don't even know is "innocent"?
Like I said, I like the song but the morals are more than lacking.
No, it's nothing new.

Bryan said...So...this is the newest crusade huh? Instead of promoting something, lets say responsible parenting, we're gonna go after this song? Fantastic.
The song is just that - a song. Talk to your kids, and guess what? They've already moved on to the next and newest song. This song was popular for a minute or two, and she's already got a new single out, and there are new songs that are really popular, so let's calm down, maybe act like we're adults, and I think we'll all see that it's alright for a little music.
And yeah - I like the song...

Anyone remember Elvis' evil hips or how evil Madonna was with "like a Virgin" and I could go on.....god forbid with discuss real topics in music while our little girls play with a doll modelled after a german hooker....

Shawn said...Umm, the very FIRST 4 lines of the song?
This was never the way I planned
Not my intention
I got so brave, DRINK IN HAND
Lost my discretion
You don't lose your discretion after 1 drink, unless you're a lightweight and get DRUNK easily, LOL
Maybe you should re-think your position, seeing how you don't have the slightest clue of what you're talking about LMAO

J-C (for Jean Claude) said...I am an educator in a Catholic girls' high school. Today, I encountered two lovely young ladies practicing this new technique: "girls kissing girls".I asked them what they were doing, and they told me: "we're getting ready for the 'real world'." We are bonding and and will be prepared for a fuller life when we get to meet acceptable boys! Frankly, I didn't have any experience or school policy to deal with new situation, so I told the girls not to do anything that would reflect negatively on the school since they could be suspended or dismissed. I then asked them to find a less public place to conduct their experimentation than behind the largest hedge on the schoool's border. I also told them that I would discuss their experimentation with their parents the next time I see it displayed in public. I wonder: Is this a scientific or a social experiment? I would love to see their "Laboratory Notebook."

Allison H. said...This isn't really a lesbian song at all, like she says "i kissed a girl just to try it." A lot of girls experiment this way, it doesn't mean they're gay
You can check out her video there are not lesbian scenes depicted at all:
