Running mate's teenage daughter pregnant
Filed under: Bump Watch, In The News, Playground Bureau
Over the weekend, the internet was awash with rumors that Sarah Palin, the 44 year old governor of Alaska and newly named running mate of Republican presidential candidate John McCain may have faked the pregnancy of her 5th child, Trig to cover that the baby was actually her grandson and was born to her 16 year-old daughter, Bristol.
The details of the soap opera-esque tale revolved around the fact that Bristol missed several months of school, ostensibly due to having mono, and that the Governor's staff were said to be shocked at Palin's pregnancy announcement late in her 2nd trimester because she didn't appear pregnant and none of them had a clue. However, the internet is also awash with rumors that Obama was not actually born in the United States and was raised Muslim, that John McCain is actually a reptilian overlord bent on taking over the Earth for aliens and that Biden isn't actually real, he's a hologram.
But it turns out that there may have been a grain of true to the Palin baby rumor: Seventeen-year-old Bristol is currently five months pregnant and planning on marrying the father and keeping the baby.
Sarah and Todd Palin issued a statement saying they are "proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents."
"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us," the statement said. "Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family."
I really feel for Bristol, who will now be known as one of the pregnant teenagers of 2008 alongside the girl in Juno and Jamie Lynn Spear. On the one hand, it's refreshing to see politicians actually showing they live by the same values they profess to believe. It's easy for wrinkled, white-haired men to say abortion is wrong and should be illegal as it's not longer a concern in their lives, but it's much different for politicians with younger kids who could actually GET pregnant. But between having a pregnant teenage daughter and a special needs baby of her own, the timing seems a bit bad for Palin. What do you think about the whole thing?

emkstar said...Yep... they are consistent Repbulican "conservatives." Hypocrits to the end. The best McCain can say for leaving his first wife while she was recovering from a car accident and dating strippers BEFORE he was a POW, is "I don't know why." Real depth of character there. In Palin's case, no parents at home (too busy doing the oil companies' bidding), kids running amuck, reproductive irresponsibility (having kid after kid late into life until finally one is born messed up), father getting DUI's. Real responsible people there. Real leadership quality. But hey, Pentacostal absolution washes them clean while most Americans are just plain old decent people.

Now you're gonna compound the problem and have her marry at this young age???? Compound the problem why dont we......
Its sad that this young girl is facing adulthood and not picking out the college to attend. Its a real balancing act having all these kids and doing the job she's going for. Im all for equality, I just hate to see kids looking for attention because neither of the parents are watching.

Just what we need increased teen pregnancies on government support. .If you're running for the 2nd highest job in the country I think you should be held to a higher standard. Would it matter if her son was a drug dealer? Yes! Mothballs McCain..
NRA member? Great just what we need more people carrying more guns....

Oscar Mayer said...It seems miss Bristol learned about unmarried conception of a child from her mom. AP reports " She married her high school sweetheart Todd, a North Slope oil field worker, and quickly started a family. She gave birth to their first son Track less than eight months later."
Hmm...Less than 8 would be 7. So she was AT LEAST 2 months pregnant when she got married.
Nice Family Values.

Linda said...If this were one of Biden's children or even O'Bama's daughter the Republican's would be all over it, condeming everyone concern regardless of the decisions made. Because it is the child of one of the few female candidates they are treating it as a "Private Matter". They need to take off the kid gloves and treat Palin like they would any other candidate with a knocked up child. It seems as though her children are tools she uses to back her agenda yet she isn't there to talk about safe sex and put the girl on the pill to protect her just in case she can't just say No!

Michele Gorman said...I'm more upset with 'truth' that Governor Palin had the child than the possibility that the child is her daughter's. Governor Palin had a high risk pregnancy and chose to fly over 11 hours the day her water broke - putting her and her child's life at risk.
The reason the rumor that the child is her daughter's is even believable is that no mother can imagine risking her own child's birth with such reckless behavior.

Personally, I would rather they gave the baby up for adoption rather than have a 17 year old child enter into marriage, but it is their choice. I am glad that they consistently live their beliefs. Mistakes happen, and they valued the life anyway.
Other than that, both candidates have said the kids are off limits, and Obama said that it has nothing to do with her as a candidate. With that -- I'll say no more.

She lost her book deal and conservatives were in an uproar about what a bad example Jamie Lynn Spears was setting by being an unmarried teenage parent. Now Palin is called a HERO for being an absent parent.
Lynn Spears is called white trash by the conservatives and Sarah Palin is called a LEADER a HERO. HYPROCRITES

That's what it's all about! CHOICE.
Republicans want less government but they want to tell people how they don't have choices in reproduction.

Karen said...No. Conservatives believe the choice is in having SEX that could result in a pregnancy. Once that choice is made, you no longer have the choice to end a life.

Oh, and that thing about Biden being a hologram? That's true. I went to shake his hand once and it went right through. He asked me not to tell.

Thank you, I do not believe that the United States wants a person like your mother for lying and covering it up by passing it as her pregnancy. I do not think the McCain party made a good choice. She is untruful, dishonet, and not a woman of her word. If she is doing this now and lying about this child for the past two years the White House surely does not need such a person.
I am a Obama-Biden supporter and I am glad that this has come out. Mrs. Palin does not deserve to be VP especially if she has bee lying for so long.
I am hopefully to see Obama and Biden in the White House in Jsnuary 2009. Mrs.Palin along with McCain leaving his first family when his first wife and children needed him most goes to show you that the Republicians have issues.

ltmslov said...Liz . . .did you not see that Trig is Palin's son and that the truth is and Palin said truthfully that her 17 yr old daughter is now 5 months pregnant. There was NO pregnancy cover up or dishonesty just an older woman who had a special needs baby and a young girl who mistakingly got preggers now. . . . the rumor is NOT true. Perhaps you should read a little closer before calling someone dishonest. I don't care who she is politically but she does deserve the respect of people realizing a truth from rumor.
I hope that Bristol is really preparing mentally, emotionally, and anyway physically possible (that goes for money, job, ect) and that her family truly supports her as much as possible.
Also, as a mother of a special needs child myself, if you find appropriate balance and have researched the needs that will have to be met than any career is possible. Each family is different and if there is a strong enough support system and good doctor's to help along the way then we have no right to judge. There life is difficult enough without all of us passing judgment on whether her being a working mom is appropriate. And, really, being VP and a woman is just another working mom, you don't see us passing judgment on the working VP dads.

tracy said...I have several thoughts about all this. One is I don't have the right to judge anyone. With that said, My concern about Gov. Palin as the choice for V.P. is
. 1)-Very little political experience the federal level. If Mc Cain wins the election and dies in office, I do NOT want someone with 2 years as Gov. of Alaska to run the country. Give her 10 more years and we'll see.
2) As a mother of a child with Down's Syndrome it is my opinion she needs to be available at any time for that child. The obligations of the office will not allow that possibility.
3) Do not run on a morality platform and then have a daughter that should have been better supervised turn up and be 5 months pregnant.
I do not care about the black/white, man/woman issue. I want the Best person for the jobs of president and vice president.
