Over the weekend, the internet was awash with rumors that Sarah Palin, the 44 year old governor of Alaska and newly named running mate of Republican presidential candidate John McCain may have faked the pregnancy of her 5th child, Trig to cover that the baby was actually her grandson and was born to her 16 year-old daughter, Bristol.
The details of the soap opera-esque tale revolved around the fact that Bristol missed several months of school, ostensibly due to having mono, and that the Governor's staff were said to be shocked at Palin's pregnancy announcement late in her 2nd trimester because she didn't appear pregnant and none of them had a clue. However, the internet is also awash with rumors that Obama was not actually born in the United States and was raised Muslim, that John McCain is actually a reptilian overlord bent on taking over the Earth for aliens and that Biden isn't actually real, he's a hologram.
But it turns out that there may have been a grain of true to the Palin baby rumor: Seventeen-year-old Bristol is currently five months pregnant and planning on marrying the father and keeping the baby.
Sarah and Todd Palin issued a statement saying they are "proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents."
"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us," the statement said. "Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family."
I really feel for Bristol, who will now be known as one of the pregnant teenagers of 2008 alongside the girl in Juno and Jamie Lynn Spear. On the one hand, it's refreshing to see politicians actually showing they live by the same values they profess to believe. It's easy for wrinkled, white-haired men to say abortion is wrong and should be illegal as it's not longer a concern in their lives, but it's much different for politicians with younger kids who could actually GET pregnant. But between having a pregnant teenage daughter and a special needs baby of her own, the timing seems a bit bad for Palin. What do you think about the whole thing?

dELL said...I don't cae if her kids have ten children out of wedlock, but Sarah should be at home with her children, not flying around the country, and if elected, around the world. To be a working mom when there is no dad is acceptable, but in this case, I don't think they are in need of money to pay their bills, so stay at home. Kids need their mother more than you know. The father is working, he should be there for his kids when he gets home from work also.

Lor said...How nice that Bristol had the financial means and health insurance to make this choice-if indeed it is her choice and not one that is being forced on her by her mother's political ambitions. There are women out there today who don't have job security or health insurance so an unexpected pregnancy would be devastating to their families.

1. Running for public office you have to be held to a higher standard. If her son was a drug dealer would that be OK?
2. Wrong message to teens...we don't need more pregnant teens on gov. support.
3. NRA member..great! Just what America needs more people carrying more guns and increased gun tolerance.
4. Too many lies coming out of her "great" speech., i.e. bridge to no where, sold the jet on e-bay,
5. If Alaska residents get paid from oil company profits would she want the gas prices to increase or decrease??????
6. She is an extremist and too interested in her own ambition.
7. Schools and libraries beware.....either get rid of your evolution books or get fired....
8. What about those polar bears? Their speices deserves to survive. Is this about money from the oil companies?

Michelle said...Something everyone, including your great Nominee seems to conveniently "forget" while pointing the finger and passing the blame: Our Congress is currently under the control of the Democratic Party. The President doesn't make the decisions for our country all by his lonesome, he had help putting us in this situation. All by people WE elected and placed in Washington to make decisions that were totally NOT in our interests, let alone our best interests.

But because of a choice that Palin's 17-year-old daughter made--sex outside of marriage-- she is being raked over the coals. Liberals don't care anything about morality until it suits their twisted agenda to do so!

Bristol's sin/stupidity/mistake was not in getting pregnant. It was in having sex with someone to whom she isn't married.

Bea said...An amazing group of posts. From all the news I've read and heard the media/gop seem euphoric at Bristol Palin's condidtion. She is now "The All American Girl". She's one of us! Yippee! I say,HUH?
Altho a few have commented that Sarah had to out her daughter to the world to foster her own career, what I cannot understand is the evangelicals' glee. When an unwed black or Latino girl gets pregnant she's a slut, a product of a 'liberal upbringing'. Well, so much for the sermon on abstinance, having Mom around to guide you, and the evils of sex education.
18 yr old Levi has not graduated from high school nor is he going to one. Is he a drop-out, expelled? He blogged that he didn't want kids but does he intend to support one? A cycnical friend mine
calls the hyper enthusiastic convention welcome to the pair, "The

Taking a public airplane from TX to AK after her water broke was extremely irresponsible, even more so knowing she had a Down's Syndrome baby. They generally need intensive care immediately. That Trig was out of the hospital after 3 days implies his DS is mild. So Sarah will probably never "get" what being a special needs mom is all about. Those of us in the trenches know that working is very tough when you have a lot of doctor and therapy appts to get your child to, plus the "homework" every night. I shudder to think a nanny will be in charge of his therapies and schooling, later on.

Let the marriage proceed after her daughter obtains a degree and employment; then, the woman isn’t bringing baggage (two dependants). The relationship will have substance; if it didn’t work out, the teen will have independence.
I feel confident that Hillary & Bill Clinton, Michelle & Barack Obama and Jill & Joe Biden would have better wisdom, style and sophistication than to parade a knocked-up teen around the world as an example of their parenthood and aspiring teens worldwide. Nor would they cheer the idea of teenage pregnancy = a road to welfare or domestic violence.
When a dumb VP puppet compares herself to be a "putbull with lipstick", I hope you know
