Woman kidnaps first grader to prove it can be done

Laurinda Drake claims that all she wanted to do was prove to school officials that kidnapping a child from Jo Mackey Elementary would be a piece of cake. Apparently, it was a piece of cake, but authorities didn't appreciate the lesson.
It all started after Drake dropped her own son off at the Las Vegas elementary school and noticed a young boy walking away from the campus. Instead of taking the boy to the school office, she took the first-grader for a ride in her car. She says the boy didn't know where he lived and didn't want to go back to school, so she drove him straight to the Clark County School District office. But police claim that she actually made a few stops along the way, including a trip to Wal-Mart and then a friend's house. While at Elaine Clermont's house, she made some phone calls to the local media and arranged for them to be present when she finally did take the boy to the district office.
The media showed up, as did the Clark County School District Police who say Drake was uncooperative when questioned. After cuffing her and taking her to a 'private room', officials determined that she had kidnapped the child.
Drake claims she was only trying to shed some light on what she feels are lax security measures at the school. And while school officials claim this was an isolated incident and that no child would ever be allowed to leave school alone, Drake says it has happened before.
I understand Drake wanting to make a point, but she is paying a heavy price for the way she went about it. She and Clermont were charged with first degree kidnapping and booked into the North Las Vegas Jail.

She needs to be in jail. That is ridiculous, to prove it can be done. We all know it can be done, and taking someone's child is wrong and stupid.

No she does not need to be in jail. She should have taken him straight to the district office and not made any stops. She may have saved that childs life. If she hadn't picked him up, someone else may have. Anything could have happened. A pedophile could have gotten him and made him experience things no child should have to.He could have been hit by an automobile. A parent may have lost their child that day. The school should be held responsible.

She may have saved this kids life, true. That, we will never know for sure.
What we DO know for sure is that this woman is off-kilter. She obviously didn't think ahead on this one. She has a child which is now motherless while she's in jail. Yes, she proved a point, but didn't she think of what the possible consequences of her actions would be?

Wooooaaahh....."we all know it can be done"??!!?? That's the point! It SHOULDN'T be done!!

My younger daughter's (3rd grade) school, the same school my older daughter attended from K-4th grade, has cameras all over the place. There is a monitor in the office that shows the vid, 4 grids at a time. I have never seen any member of the office staff looking at the monitor.
All classroom doors in the main building are supposed to be set to lock when they are closed, as are the 6 out-buildings that house the 3rd grade classrooms, as is the 4th grade building.
There are signs on all classroom doors and all doors leading into the main building & all out-buildings that state visitors must go to the office before attempting to enter any door. Teachers are not supposed to let anyone without a visitor's badge enter their classroom.
I'm on the PTO board so I'm at school at least twice a week, plus the days I go to eat lunch with my 3rd grader. I can't count the number of times I've knocked on a class room door to have a little face peek out at me it as he/she opened it. I can't count the times I've walked right into an out building because the main doors were unlocked. Many teachers leave their doors open.
Other moms at other schools tell me it is the same at their schools.
Granted, most of the teachers and many of the students know my face, but what is the point of having safety rules if they are not followed/enforced?
If I can walk around as I please through that school, so can anyone else.
The private school my 5th grader is attending this year is more strict with security. All doors are locked after the final bell except for the main entrance. The woman who sits at the desk at the entrance knows me, but if I don't have my security badge she won't let me go past her.

I just dont understand why a parent would let their child go off on their own. Perhaps if some of us got off our bum and either walk or drive the child to school they would be safe.
I have a 14 year old and I STILL either walk with her or drive her to the bus-stop.
What this lady did was a good thing to bring attention to the parents who shouldnt be parents.
Face it, If you don't have time to take you child to school or a bus-stop, quit being a breeder!!!

I would say she proved her point. There are a lot of crazy people, mostly herself, that are willing to go to these lengths. I am guessing she wouldn't be too happy if someone did this to her child.

If that happened to my kid, the KIDNAPPER would never see the light of day because her eyes would be sewn shut forever. If i couldn't get to her, she'd be in jail for the longest term that I could prosecute for.
Cece obviously does not have ANY children OR doesn't love her own children.
Kidnapping is a FEDERAL OFFENCE!!! That means it IS a federal crime.

Kidnapping can be punishable by death in some states.

The blame lies at the schools mostly as they were clearly not looking after the child. She brought the child to the school district office, it's not like she kidnapped him and asked for ransom!

ANOTHER ONE WITH NO CHILDREN!!!

Denny quit going overboard with the "wackipedia" citation. I think what this case boils down to is the black letter law vs. the spirit of the law and also the intent of the defendant. According to the black letter law , yes technically what she did was kidnapping but there was no premediation nor was there malicious intent in her actions (in order to be considered a crime intent has to be there- she did not go out that day intending to kidnap a child). her intent was only to show the school and public what was wrong with security not to commit a crime . Her intent can be proven by her actions - she called the media to bring attention to the issue . She was open about what she had done to the public not secretive as a REAL kidnapper would be. in this case you wouldnt want to invoke remedies that the letter of the law requires one would invoke the spirit of the law. I would say that her lawyer will have a fairly easy time getting the charges dropped....
We should really be angry with the school
mom of 2 9-12-2008 @ 1:06PM
point and case why is no one mad at the School? or the parent that left the child unattened. Why does everyone always think the worldt out of everyone. There are still people who are decent. A good parent would have made sure the child was in the school... whether walking them to the door or inot the school. Blame the parent who didnt care.. and if you would have sought revenge on the person .. you would be in jail to. What good would you being doing your children there..
Cece 9-12-2008 @ 1:48PM
Yes, I've got a child, a three year old, who I love very much. Yes kidnapping is a crime. So is murder. Would you rather have to bury your child then to pick him up to from the school's district office because someone saw him walking away from school and cared enough to pick him up. Yes, she should have taken him back to school. I agree with that. What would have happened if someone who didn't care about his wellbeing would have picked him up
Denny 9-12-2008 @ 9:00PM
Yes, the school is at fault. They have a civil responsibility for the safety of every student in CCSD.
Yes, the parents of the kidnapped child are unfit parents. What happened to teaching your child never to talk to strangers? What happened to teaching your child to never enter another persons car?
Finally, yes, the person who picked up the little kid who was walking around the front of the school is a kidnapper and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
Apparently some of you are having a hard time with putting yourself in the shoes of the parents of the kidnapped child.
Cece seems to think that a "kidnapper" is looking out for the wellbeing of a child. Sigh. How is it in todays society that someone can kidnap a child to "show that it can be done". If that was ok for people to do this type of protest, then someone can walk up to the newly built Freedom Tower in NYC (when it is finally completed) and blow it up just like the Twin Towers just to "show that it can be done" so long as they didn't intend to hurt anyone.
Kara, you don't need premeditation, nor malice intent in order to be charged with kidnapping. Her intent was to take a child to "show them that it can be done". Just because she admitted publicly that she was bringing the child back to safety, doesn't mean that she is innocent.
I feel that the woman who took the child for a ride in her car and went shopping at Wal-Mart should be charged with kidnapping because the parents of the child, I am sure, will sue CCSD. They will have to make an example of the kidnapper and punish heavily. Not to the fullest extent and not the easiest punishment either.
We all should thank God that it wasn't our child that this happened to.
Corrinne 9-14-2008 @ 6:18PM
Denny,
Seriously? Even if you don't let your child out of your sight like these people did (or the school did), would you have rather (like everyone else is saying) a pedophile picked the kid up? I think she didn't think it through well. I think she should have got the kid in her car, stayed where she was, called the media and the police, and waited. Or gone straight to the cop shop.
Rapists get out with less than death, all the time. Why should someone who drove a kid around for an hour or so (who didn't hurt him in any way) be punished so severely? I don't think any punishment is necessary, but at the most a fine.
Just another example how screwed up our justice system is. Petty theifs and non violent offenders get much larger sentences than rapists and child molesters. Someone wake me up when this country makes sense again.
I don't have any of my own kids, but I have two step children and many neices and nephews. I also asked the actual mothers and fathers what they thought, and while they said they'd be a little irritated, they think someone needs to make the school shape up and ultimately would be much happier that this lady picked the kid up rather than have him in harms way.
Ignortant people like you shouldn't breed or be allowed to vote. You are an example of everything that is wrong in this country.
Denny 9-14-2008 @ 9:18PM
I am "ignortant" and you cannot even spell ignorant?
ok
Wake up!
We all KNOW the kidnapper didn't think it through well. Can she spell moron?
Someone actually TOOK a kid and you feel that they should get off easy because they SAID that they only wanted to prove a point.
There were no rapists, killers, pedophiles, nor killers associated within this case. I don't know why you are even bringing them up. Everyone knows that no sexual, physical harm came into play here. Possibly mental harm was done to the little boy.
Pedophile, rapist, killer, murderer... whatever you want to label them. WHOMEVER picked that child up has now the label of KIDNAPPER. Get it? Irregardless if there is another illegal charge tied in along with kidnapping, she still is a kidnapper. You don't need to be a rapist, murderer, pedophile nor a killer to qualify yourself to be a kidnapper.
How can you associate kidnapping with petty theft? Where is your logic?
Let's take, for example, the World Trade Center Attack. Those buildings were leveled and thousands lost their lives. Now they are rebuilding in NYC with a new tower. Its called the Freedom Tower. Now lets say someone goes into the new Freedom Tower after its rebuilt and blows it up somehow, either by crashing into it with airplanes like they did last time or some other way. Now mind you the person who blew it up didn't intend to hurt anyone and luckily, no one was in fact hurt. The person who blew it up only wanted to prove the point that someone can blow it up again.
There's a reason you don't have kids of your own. Think about it.
Thank God you aren't a lawmaker.

If she was going to pull a prank like that she should have arranged someone to kidnap her own kid instead of using someone elses kid as a guinea pig. Whether what she thought she did was harmless or not, a little common sense should have told her that she'd be in some deep you know what when she got found out. She put someone elses kids life in danger, who knows if she'd have got in a wreck or whatever with that kid in the car and now she's got a nice little arrest and jail time. YES she does deserve to be in jail and whoever said she does not, you're a moron, what if that were your kid she picked up "just to prove a point"? She's not getting any girl scout badges for that one. She deserves what she got and I hope she learned her lesson.

Well then I guess I'm a moran - the school and the parent of that child should be ashamed - what if it was a real kidnapping and the family of that little boy never saw him again or he comes home going through God only knows what - should she have thought it out - yes - cause know she's the one who is going to be punished and the school will continue to do what they've always done - nothing - till it happens for real
