Breastmilk key ingredient at Swiss restaurant
Filed under: Nutrition: Health, Mealtime
We all know that "breast is best" when it comes to a baby's first food, but what about after that? Some mothers breastfeed their children for several years. Okay, so that's great if you can do it, but what about adults? Why should grown-ups be denied the health benefits of mother's milk? Well, a restaurant owner in Switzerland doesn't think his customers should be given the cold shoulder when it comes to breastmilk.
Hans Locher plans to offer soups, stews, and sauces containing at least seventy-five percent breastmilk on his menu. "We have all been raised on it," he says. "Why should we not include it into our diet?" He has taken out ads looking for donors and plans to pay more than five dollars a pint. "I first experimented with breast milk when my daughter was born," Locher explains. "One can cook really delicious things with it."
If you're considering adding some to your diet, I'm sure Locher would be completely supportive. "However," he warns, "it always needs to be mixed with a bit of whipped cream, in order to keep the consistency." So there you go.

What I'm wondering is how is he going to screen for HIV, OTC medications, crack/cocaine, marijuana, nicotene, etc.? A LOT of people are on some kind of drugs or another anymore, and you'd have to be nuts to do this so I hope he also screens for lithium and other antidepressants!
PS what's next, serving up human livers?

But I would be extremely leery of the process by which this restaurant procures and screens breast milk for public consumption... a want ad? Does Hans Locher realize one of the leading routes of HIV transmission is breast milk? I know Europeans are more flexible in laws which pertain to food, but I can't believe this is not condemned by the Swedish authorities who govern food safety and/or infectious diseases.

Flash-heating breast milk to kill the HIV virus is only advocated in 3rd world countries where HIV-infected mothers have no alternate or improved method of nourishing their babies. These babies need the health benefits of breast milk to survive dysentery and other diseases, so a way to deactivate the HIV virus but retain the nutrients of breast milk may become a viable option for them. But more studies must be conducted to substantiate the value of flash-heating breast milk to this end. WHO recommends that HIV-positive mothers avoid breastfeeding when safe feeding alternatives are available. I'm guessing WHO would also recommend adults avoid HIV-positive breast milk when safe feeding alternatives are available. Now, if you want to work in a restaurant where you get to handle unpasteurized, HIV infected breast milk, you can get a job in Sweden. Or if you want to eat breast milk with street cred while crossing your fingers that the chef used thermometers, timing and laboratory analysis to make sure he gets the HIV virus every time... Well, yum, yum eat 'em up!

However, if one is cooking with breast milk (UGH) then I would think as with pasturization, all the natural goodness as well as viruses will be eliminated once the milk is exposed to heat. Don't know what heating will do with drugs present in breast milk though. I confesss to drinking raw milk at a friends dairy farm (it is fabulous!) but then I also "knew" the cows. I spent several summers on the farm, feeding, milking and caring for the herd. It was a great way to grow up.

I was an OB nurse for years who handled pumps and bottles of breast milk pumped for preemies by their Moms. It is some of the most disgusting looking stuff on the planet. I was also an IVF nurse who handled lots of semen in specimen cups. Ewwww to all of this nonsense!
