Does having it all make Sarah Palin more like us?
Filed under: In The News, Mommy Wars

Welcome to Red Mom Blue Mom, ParentDish's special coverage of the 2008 Presidential election. Each Tuesday through November 4, columnists Rachel Campos-Duffy (Red Mom) and Ada Calhoun (Blue Mom) will take on issues relevant to parents on both sides of the aisle. Blue Mom: Sarah Palin -- She's not like us
By Ada Calhoun
The good news is we're popular. Women who are balancing career and family and worried about the tanking economy are this year's "security moms." Time magazine is calling us "Maxed-Out Moms" and saying we'll be deciding the election. Go, us!The bad news is John McCain thinks he can woo us with a "Type A, antiabortion, Christian Stepford wife in a 'sexy librarian' costume," in the words of Salon.com's Cintra Wilson. Sarah Palin is George Bush in pumps. She thinks creationism should be taught alongside evolution and that raped women should be denied abortions (and pay for their own rape kits).
The worse news: McCain's cynical bid for our attention has been working. And rather than focusing on Palin's political incompetence, we've been distracted by condescending questions you would never see if she were a man (and that are 100% projections of our own tough choices), like this one from Reuters:
"Should a 44-year-old mother of five, including a newborn with special needs and a pregnant teenager, take on a job that will keep her away from her home for much of the next two months to eight years?" The New York Times called these discussions "Mommy Wars: Special Campaign Edition."
It's a ridiculous conversation to even entertain. The truth is, we have far more in common with Barack and Michelle, who only recently paid off their student loan debt, than with Todd and Sarah, whose high-paying jobs allow them what appears to be infinite vacation time in which to gut moose and shoot wolves from planes
Let's stop worrying about her family. She can afford babysitting and sick days. Thanks to what Slate describes as "Alaska's large negative income tax (and outsize share of federal pork)," the Palins are living it up on two six-figure incomes.
Sarah Palin has it all, in the traditional sense: the hunky husband, the passel of kids, the high-power job, the financial security, the silk Valentino jackets. She's Diane Keaton in Baby Boom meets Melanie Griffith in Working Girl. Her family is living the dream.
But what about our families? Sarah Palin may be like us in certain ways. Most of us acquired our foreign policy expertise from sixth-grade global studies, for example. But judging by her right-of-Bush positions on the issues, she doesn't appear to have any intention of sharing the wealth. Every plank of the McCain-Palin platform shows that she's far from one of the girls.
Red Mom: Along comes Sarah
By Rachel Campos-Duffy
During one of the funnier moments in the Democrat primary, Barack Obama mocked Hillary's attempt to bond with Pennsylvania voters with childhood stories about hunting with her grandfather: "She's talking like she's Annie Oakley!" Obama laughed. Who could have predicted that five short months later an authentic Alaskan Annie Oakley, with pioneer-woman skills, down-home values, and sexy eyewear would shake up the race and our notions of successful motherhood. On the left and right, much of the fascination with Sarah Palin has to do with her having seemingly accomplished the elusive female trifecta: big career, great marriage, and a brood of five kids ranging from 18 years of age to 4 months. Did I mention that she was able to hide her latest pregnancy well into her sixth month, thanks to tight abs? Just as women were giving up on being super-mom, and well-educated Gen Xers began dropping out of the work force to explore a more balanced approach to work and family ("I can have it all, just not all at the same time"), along comes Sarah. She's the successful governor of America's largest and most macho state, yet she's the most unabashed and overtly maternal politician our nation has ever seen.
How does she do it? Does she really have it all? Yes, she does have it all, but this type of high-level multi-tasking is never simple and the results are always complicated and sometimes messy, as the tabloids and her critics ceaselessly remind us.
But while her over-achiever approach to career and fertility may not be for you (as a fellow mother of five, I get exhausted just thinking about it), there is still plenty to learn and admire from how well she has managed to put it all together. The first and most important part of her success is a supportive husband. She has also chosen to live close to her extended family and believes teenagers need to pull their weight in the family (amen to that one!). Following the birth of her son Trig, Todd, not a nanny, came with her to the office to help out. As the mayor and then governor, Sarah keeps a baby swing and crib at the office and she has been known to nurse discreetly during meetings.
Not every woman is blessed with these options, but when a woman who can DOES, it says something about her priorities. Besides, with an 80% approval rating, the highest of any U.S. governor, who can credibly say she is neglecting her professional duties?
What impresses me most about Sarah Palin is the fact that she stood by her pro-life values when she found out that only one year into first term as governor she was pregnant with a Downs Syndrome baby. It was an unplanned pregnancy and she knew that that following through with it would raise serious questions about her ability to perform as governor and expose her to harsh and hurtful criticisms about her mothering. While other women may have chosen an easier road, she did not. Instead of compromising her principles for the sake of convenience or political expediency, she found creative and cooperative ways to make it work. Not a bad credential for a future VP!
| Yes - she understands what's important to moms. | |
|---|---|
| No - her political views are nothing like mine. | |
| It's not relevant to her candidacy; only her qualifications are. |

Gee, I guess she wasn't born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Her parents were a science teacher and school worker. Also, being taught that you don't go into debt, working her way through college may have been the reason it took her more than the standard "four" years to graduate.

San said...She's asking victims of rape to pay for their own rape kits! what a monster! Of course she's not spending quality time with her baby she's been asked to campaign for vice presidency-just because she's anti abortion doesn't mean she likes children Most Anti-Choice people are not adopting unwanted children to show them what a loving family is -they are just judging people to make themselves feel better.
A vote for old man McCain IS a vote for Palin!

I would like to understand why it is some woman have such hate and are so ugly about Gov. Palin. That kind of hate isn't healthy and it's really distrubing. Perhaps some of these haters need therapy.

kate2 said...For heavens sake - she was mayor of a little bitty town of 8000 people - you think she never heard of this practice for over 4 years??!! No one ever complained, or brought it to her attention??!! And besides, annual budgets are typically shown side-by-side with prior year budgets/actual results for comparative purposes. There is NO WAY she could miss the fact that $15,000 just disappeared from the budget once she took office. OF COURSE she knew that the police dept intended to charge rape victims for the kits.

JoAnn said...To the poster above who commented that not having a passport does not mean that you're uninterested in the world. Well- that may well be the case for laymen like us- but if you have aspirations to run (what used to be) the most powerful country in the World- you better bone up on that foreign policy. And you don't get much of that by hanging out of a plane and shooting moose, or by spending your time honing your nepotism skills at home in Alaska.
I am not going to comment on Sarah Palin's mothering skills. Because as someone said above- that's really not my interest. What IS my interest is JOHN MCCAIN'S PLATFORM and whether it does, or the platform of Senator Obama does, match my own philosophies and beliefs.
Enough with the lipstick bullsh*t talk. I mean- if Obama wears suspenders we might as well just start lambasting him because boy- what a fashion faux pas!! Maybe that can be the next topic for "RED MOM/BLUE MOM".

Liz said...Since you brought it up, Rachel, I'm a little confused here as to what it means to "do it all."
Palin's got a son who's off to the military because of all sorts of trouble with the law and a near-failing GPA, she's got a pregnant party-girl teenage daughter who's too young to legally marry the father in most states, she's got the legislature wearing "Where's Sarah" pins because she stopped showing up to work, and she's got a small town she left behind with an enormous deficit to pay off.
We should all "do it all" so very, very well.

Chere said...I am more concerned about Palin's ability to run the country if something should happen to John McCain. The questions we should be asking are whether or not she has the experience to take office if she has to. Honestly, I don't think she does. That is great she can handle her home, children, and job as governor, but that does not mean she is suitable to be Vice President of the United States. Look around you many women are doing it all. Women are taking care of the children, providing financially for our families, having careers and making it to PTA meetings and some of us are doing it without a husband.
I think McCain pulled a very strategic but selfish move. He chose somebody that would take the attention off the real issues at hand. I say this is selfish because if something were to happen to him he has a Vice President that does not have the experience to lead the country. Just listen to her interviews, and really listen and don't put the blinders on just because she is a woman who has a large family and a job. Really we shouldn't be giving her this much attention it is Obama and McCain who are running for President. Whoever gets in has a huge job ahead of them, one that is critical.
We need to focus on the ISSUES. Who is going to get our country out of the mess that we are in? Who is going to improve our relationships with other countries, who is going to help end this war, who is going to find solutions to our energy issues, who is going to improve our educational system, who is going to make sure that healthcare is not a benefit to some but is available for all? Who is going to build up our economy?
The rape kit issue is a disgrace and I am hoping that has changed. To make a already traumatized woman pay for her own expensive rape kit is deplorable.
The only other comment that I have to make is, we are applauding Palin for having this baby, and that is wonderful that she has this baby. however you can not say that a woman who decided not to make a choice of having a child has taken the easy road. Abortion is no way an easy road. If someone makes the decision to terminate a pregnancy it is never an easy choice. But it is THEIR choice. I think it is insensitive to make this assumption.

Though, Todd does work as a seasonal commercial fisherman to "offset" the family budget! So while they are more well-off than most americans, they aren't rich. as for the obamas they reported combined income of 996k for 2006. they're richer than the palins and their assets ($1.7m home) qualifies them(though 4k short of the actual number) to be in the 16% of households making 100k/yr.
the real issues regarding palin are not about her "balancing it all." even super heros have problems with this. she's got trooper gate and a 17 year old pregnant daughter. so palin certainly has not handled some parts of her life with balance.
palin is and remains a slap in the face to the electorate. she was selected after mccain & co called obama a celebrity. she is now one, too. SLAP! they also called obama unprepared and untested due to his youth(46) and accumulated experience(3 yrs) in the national debate. She's got 3yrs as governor, 6 as small town mayor. SLAP SLAP! they discredited him for lacking foreign affairs experience. palin visited the alaskan national gurad in kuwait and germany and sees russia from her living room window. SLAP SLAP SLAP. these anomolies are the real and only problems with sarah palin. her gender has zilch to do with ANYTHING political.

cassandra said...If you agree with Sarah Palin on the issues, that's one thing, but I am appalled when people cite her looks, style, abs, glasses, and the like when talking about why they are voting McCain/Palin. It makes them appear uneducated and uninformed at best, and just plain dumb at worst.
Personally, I don't care if Sarah Palin gave birth to fifteen babies with Down Syndrome or if she never misses a hockey game or makes homemade mooseburgers every night. I care about the issues: her ability to address the economic crisis, global warming, foreign policy issues, etc.
Again, if you agree with Palin on the issues, you have a right to your opinion, but for anyone out there who is actually going to vote McCain/Palin because they like that she has five kids *just* like me or some other equally inane reason, I just don't even know what to say--are we really narcissistic enough to think the best person for the job is the one who most resembles us and our lives?

McCain left his first wife with all of her health problems to marry a rich little blonde girl 20 years his junior. How does that factor in to your thinking? When Palin was a mayor, her town charged women for rape kits...up to a $1000. How does that factor in to your thinking? You can't take just the good and forget about the bad in these people. If you want to vote for them because you agree with their issues, fine - But stop pretending they're saints.

S23 said...Okay, I've read all your comments. How hateful we are to each other when someone disagrees with us. Here are some facts: Sen John McCain was a POW, tortured (even though NBC is trying to discredit). He truly loves this country. Yes, he is older (but not dead yet, so please) He tried repeatedly to stop the Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac fiasco only to be blocked (Ask former Pres Clinton, he said it on national TV) and members of the democratic party. Yes, he did divorce his wife and marry a younger woman. (Are any of you living in glass houses out there??) At least, unlike Pres Clinton (and by the way I voted for him), Sen McCain has not had sexual relations "with that woman" in the White House of all places. On to Gov Palin: No, Sarah does not charge for rape kits. She also did not pull books out of the library (some of the books listed on the internet had not even been published when she was in office). It's obvious if you read unedited versions of her interview with Charlie Gibson, she is more knowledgeable than given credit. Yes, it took her 5 years to get her degree. (She was working two jobs) No she didn't get a passport until last year, she was working two jobs and then had a family. She just couldn't make time (I guess) to go jet setting. As for Gov Palin being "a heartbeat" from the presidency....Do you people think the President is all-knowing (thankfully that's God, not man, not even Obama). As the President, he/she surrounds himself/herself with (we hope) the best in their field of expertise (called a "Cabinet". or Secretaries of....). These experts are tasked with knowing what is going on and where. They then, "advise" the President. Also, Gov Palin did not say she sold the State plane on e-bay, she said "I put it on e-bay." No, it didn't sell, they brokered it and did sell it, but not on e-bay. Her ex-brother-in-law threatened not only her sister and father with "a bullet in the head", but also four other family members.
Next, Sen Biden: After being in Congress for 35 years, he is very well known for his gaffes. Namely, FDR in 1929 (Great Depression) went on TV...We know this isn't true. His comment, you can't even go into a Dunkin Donut unless you can speak another language, there are so many Indians (dot not feather), stand up Charlie, to a man confined to a wheel chair. Not to mention 14 (I'm being nice and not saying lies) misrepresentations in the one and only VP debate. He himself has said Obama was not ready to lead this nation, Obama's cutting off funds to the military was dangerous. If he became President, can you imagine if he met with foreign dignitaries and made comments he is "well known for"? and then lastly, Sen Obama: As a lawyer, he was hired to teach people who worked for organizations such as ACORN. These people go into banks who refuse to give loans to people who don't really qualify (can't pay) for home mortgages and harass and bully them. They are being prosecuted in 12 states RIGHT NOW for voter fraud such as registering 12 year olds and dead people...They take homeless people in to register and vote on the same day in the states where that is legal. In collusion with the Daley's, Sen Obama sat on a board along with William Ayers (look it up). While on this board, several hundred low income people were displaced from public housing with the promise of "better" and they got "none" (Change?) Though on this board, Obama claims he was an "aquaintence" of Bill Ayers. My question, do you sit on a board (say PTA, school, etc) and not know anything about the others? Anyway, give him the benefit of the doubt. Along comes Bill Ayers' "wife", Bernadette Dohrn who introduces Michelle Robinson (yes his wife Michelle) to Obama. Another question, William Ayers and Bernadette Dohrn are "married". she, Bernadette introduces Obama and Michelle, but Obama "casually" knows Bill Ayers, make sense to you? Who's William Ayers anyway, glad you asked. William Ayers and Bernadette Dohrn were protesters back during Vietnam. The "group" was responsible for bombing American citizens...They have strong socialist, if not communist" ties. When asked about Bill Ayers by Bill O'Reilly, Obama said, "I don't want to hold anything against a man for what he did 40 years ago." Really, as late as 2001, Bill Ayers was quoted as saying, "my only regret is not blowing up enough..." . One only has to read Obama's own books (they are "biographies" by the way) to see the sort of influence he grew up with. His step father "taught me how to fight" telling the young Obama, "learn to protect yourself because the white man, if he likes your house, he'll take it away from you, he liikes your woman, he'll take her from you." But gee, guess he really didn't have much influence on Little Obama. Then there's Rev Wright, Obama and his wife and later daughters, sat under his sermons for over 20 years, supposedly going to church twice a week, married by the Rev Wright and Wright even baptised his children, yet Obama "never heard" the racist rantings of Rev Wright??? Are WE THE PEOPLE really that naive??? I mean, honestly, Obama could not even get a security clearance to work in a Department of Defense installation and we are going to give him access to "national secrets". Are we crazy??? I haven't even touched on Frank Marshall Davis (another man who was instrumental in his life, look it up) or Tony Rezco (sp). All of you keep talking about looking up what each candidate stands for, yet you ignore things that are so detrimental to our Country. I don't care what the economy is, I don't care about Wall Street. I will live on bread and water for the next 10 years rather than vote for a man who is bent on destroying the very foundations of this Country for which our ancestors fought and died. Please, people, I'm begging you check out the facts. http:/www.americanthinker.com/2008/09obama and daleys public housing.html http: www.americanthinker.com/2008/09barack obama and the strategy.html and youtube.com/watch?v=_MGT_cSi7Rs&NR=1, and finally youtube.com/watch?v=1RZVw3no2A4&feature=iv&annotation_id=event_743112
