Acid reflux linked to chronic croup
Categories: Newborns, Babies, Health & Safety, Medical Conditions
Croup is almost always caused by a virus. But a recent small study found that recurrent cases of croup, or those that happen repeatedly in a short period of time, might actually be triggered by acid reflux. When doctors treated children with recurrent croup who also had symptoms of acid reflux, many showed improvement in the number of times they came down with croup and the severity of it.
Though researchers believe that this acid reflux/croup link only applies to a small number of children, there is growing evidence out there linking acid reflux with other respiratory disorders, such as asthma. If your child has symptoms of acid reflux, it might be worth mentioning to your doctor.

My son has been cursed with acid reflux disease since birth. Well between milk protien intolerant, lactose intolerant, and the acid reflux it was a very rough start to life for my son. We tried every thing for the acid reflux, the adding cereal and the other stuff and nothing worked. We ended up on alimentum formula and if that did not work we were told there was only one more formula we could try and it was $56 a can. The alimentum was $8 a can and he ended up going through a can a day. Luckily with the alimentum and he was put on zantac at 3 weeks old he was finally able to eat without screaming. My son never out grew the acid reflux but did out grow the other intolerances. Since about 2 years old he has now been on prevacid 15 mg a day. This has worked great. My son also has had asthma since very little and still has many problems with it. For the asthma he is now on singular, albuteroland pulmicourt. I have never seen so many children with acid reflux and asthma as you do now days. The thing I worry about is that heart burn or rather acid reflux does run strong on both sides of my sons families and a couple of years agao my cousin was diagnosed with esophagial cancer and was told it was from having acid reflux all these years and never really taken care of it besides taking tums. This is a major thing they worry about with my son. The specialist wants to scope him to make sure everything is ok and cells have not changed yet but I can not get my self to let them do this to my child. I can tell when it is under control and when it is not , the prevacid works really good but diet is a key role also. On days that my son eats pizza or saucy things i can see it start to act up and he can take another prevacid . I try not to let him eat stuff like that all the time but what kid can live without pizza and speghetti. Until I see my son suffering really bad I do not belive the scope is nessesary. I could see if none of the meds worked and he was still suffering bad. This is not an easy thing to deall with and I feel sorry for any child that suffers from it.
