Boy suspended over anti-Obama tshirt
Filed under: Tweens, Teens, Day Care & Education
With only 40 days left until the 2008 Presidential election, there's no doubt that things are heating up. As the candidates battle it out on the main stage, conversations at home are bound to turn to politics. Parents, of course, have a huge influence over a child's developing political leanings. And parents who feel strongly about an issue are sure to pass those feelings on to their kids.
Whether or not it was his due to his parents' influence, a Colorado boy is pretty certain that, if he was of voting age, he wouldn't be casting his vote for Barack Obama. The boy wore a handmade t-shirt to school that declared, "Obama: A Terrorist's Best Friend." The school gave the boy three choices -- change his clothes, turn the shirt inside out, or get suspended. The boy chose suspension, and now his family plans to sue. Hooo, boy.
The family is citing First Amendment rights, of course, while the school district says it has a right to ban any clothing that interferes with learning. I think that the school district did the right thing. The shirt was inflammatory, and they gave the boy several options to avoid suspension. But I'm sure there are others who think this is a gross violation of this boy's rights. Where do you stand on the issue?

Tina said...Do you think he would have been suspended for any inflammatory remark against Senator McCain? I doubt it. I live in Colorado and I really think that all children should wear uniforms to school. The schools here in Colorado are very much liberal.

krboatman said...my point being that if they are gonna ban anti obama statements then they have to ban anti mccain statements as well.if they are gonna ban nra statements then they have to ban anti hunting statements as well.if they are gonna ban the mention of god then they can't teach evolution.it should not be up to the schools to enforce the current culture of political correctness.it is their job to teach facts, not to advance their own agenda.

reggie said...The t-shirt was not racist, but it was very ignorant for the simple fact that obama is not a terrorist in any way because if he was i think our gov, has enough intel that he would not be running for president and be a head at that so lets be real here and see this for what it is. look through the smoke screen.

donnak said...The shirt was offensive because it was worn to draw attention. A shirt that says "I vote Obama" OR "I vote McCain" is just a statement... not inflamatory in anyway. Calling Obama a terrorist; like calling McCain a lying mini Bush is inflamatory ... meant to stir up trouble. BTW for the record I have done a lot of research on Obama and he is not a Muslum... he attended a school where the majority of students were Muslum (probably because of where the school was located) for a short period of time. I don't read Republican lies... I look in a lot of areas for the facts.
Back to the subject ... my son wore a shirt to school (he was 17) it said "Save water, drink beer". He was told turn it around or be sent home. He wanted to be sent home; they called me and after I got him on the phone he turned the shirt around. I told him that morning not to wear that shirt (which to avoid argument I did not get him he is from a divorced family where the home he visits has different values, etc).
School is a place to learn ... and we need to re-establish basic common sense in dress and discipline - until we do our schools will be out of control. One of the reasons our kids are so behind educationally is because schools spend so much time dealing with this kind of crap. I do not think the article said how old the boy is .. it is an older kid (say 14 or older) then he is responsible and needs to accept the consequences of a bad choice. If he is younger... WAY bad call on the parents side. Either way the parents should be backing the school not complaining and threatening a law suit. It's like co-parenting... you back the other parents whether you think they are being a idiot or not. As with my son's shirt... my comment was that is inappropriate for school. I didn't way OMG what is wrong with those people.
Just my opinion.

Kaitlin said...kate jo, As a newspaper journalist "I" well know the rights to children in ANY public school. First, the child (and yes i say child because he WAS a 5th grader and it was his FATHERS opinion that he was stating/expressing not his own, and yes they have evidence of that if you search the web and read the million other BETTER WRITTEN news articles on this subject) MIGHT have had the right to wear this shirt to school, but then again, he mentioned terrorist. In a world filled with fear (still) of the terrorists that attacked on 9/11, I imagine this child's shirt scared the school so badly that they decided to limit the child on his free speech. For example, if a child came to YOUR school (Imagine that you are back in elementary school) wearing a McCain shirt that read "McCain is a self-absorbing bigot" you'd like them to turn it inside out or be suspended wouldn't you? I'm guessing so. Bottom line is, a 5th grader is SO not ready to form his own opinion. I was in the car the other day with a friend from work and his younger daughter was in the car with us. We started discussing politics and my friend asked me who i'm supporting for the Presidental Election. I stated "Obama. For Sure." and in the process of discussing this issue i found that he was a McCain fan. His daughter spoke up from the back seat (a 5th grader herself) and said, "Yeah we don't like that Obama man." The father reached behind the seat, lightly smacked her in the leg and said "That's only because i've raised you to say that." Now, tell me whether that girl made her OWN opinion. Do you really think so? I don't, especially since my friend STATED as much.

Dyan said...I think a father is exploiting his son with his own opinions and there is dress codes in school, the child isn't old enough to vote and like the child said "my dad made me wear it" Is it the childs 1st ammendment rights or is it the fathers? Since the father doesn't go to school there ( sounds like he needs to) then his opinion should not be advertised.

I wonder if it were an anti McCain T shirt if the same big deal would have been made about it. Well , actually I don't wonder.......the school would have loved it. Bunch of card carrying aclu liberal morons.
-------------------------------------------------------------So, Maureen, what's your opinion of Rush, since HE called the ACLU to help him out when accused of 'doctor-shopping' to support his illegal drug habit?
Would you say that Rush sought the advice of morons?

She also said that the majority of teachers in her school are for Barrack Hussein Obama and aren't afraid to preach their views to their students. Schools have received so much money for the education of our kids and still the test scores are going down. I dont think money is what we need to sovle these problems. We need more parents to get invovled and hold these educators and administrators feet to the fire. These school boards have done us no favors and are not doing their jobs yet they still want a raise every year without any accountability. Only in America.

My kids a few years back would have to turn their shirt inside out because something might have a skull or something else that might offend someone.
School can do this because the shirt might interfere with learning.

OBAMA IS HALF BLACK AND HALF WHITE he has the best of both races and cultures....I think the T-shirt did not belong in school. I agree whole heartedly in freedom of speech. but school was NOT the place to wear the shirt period.
