PETA urges Ben & Jerry's to use breastmilk
Filed under: Weird But True
Last week, Roger wrote about a Swiss restaurant that plans to use human breastmilk in 75% of it's recipes in place of cow's milk. PETA, for one, thinks the idea is a great one. They recently wrote a letter to ice cream experts Ben & Jerry's, urging them to use breast milk in their ice cream instead of cows milk.
"The breast is best! Won't you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching to cow's milk in Ben & Jerry's ice cream?" the letter read. Someone needs to tell PETA that people don't eat Ben & Jerry's for the health benefits.
Ben & Jerry's, ever the diplomats, responded kindly: "We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child."
Look, I care about cows. I really do. I want them to be treated in an ethical and humane manner, and I'm willing to pay a little extra for products that promise that. And really, we're not big milk drinkers in our family, anyway. But when I buy a pint of "Everything But The..." to enjoy while watching Grey's Anatomy, I don't want that "everything" to include another women's breast milk. But like Ben & Jerry's, I applaued PETA for making people take notice.
What do you think?

Stephanie said...I understand the idea....But really i think it's gross and Im glad i see many people agree. When you think about it...to get the amount of breast milk that ben and jerrys would need we would then have to farm women breastfeeding in order to get that much. So i think its a wonderful idea that there are breastmilk banks for babies whos mothers cannot produce it...but in my icecream? i'm good thank you. I am a PETA supporter in many ways...but i question some things they do.

HarryFromNE said...Well... I always have known PETA were a bunch of 'boobs', now here's proof.
Can I pick which women I want to ingest the breast milk from? How many will equal what's needed? Can we keep it to just cheerleaders? How to avoid infected breast milk with HIV, etc?
PETA in Outer Space.
America & the world, start rejecting the far left extremism .. this is only a small example of the insanity.

Jim said...PETA,
IS the dumbest bastards on the face of the earth. They have no common sense when it comes to making sure that a nation has the fullest nutrition for it human population. PETA is a home grown terrorist group next to the HSUS. They want everyone to become vegan's. I do not want to be a vegan, I want to eat meat protien.
They are both running up cost of product in the stores because of their activity. They are attacking US groups, just wait until we have to get our protien from overseas. Do you want what is overseas, I don't. China can not even make baby formula! We are a nation dependant on forign oil, wait till we are dependant on forign food.
PETA and HSUS are praying on the minds of the weak.

Jim said...Everyone is in support of being nice to companion animals, however some animals are here for a purpose. They were created to feed the population of the world.
Do not support or give your money to PETA give your money like myself to a local animal shelter, talk to the shelter and ask them if you can buy them dog food or cat food or a bag of horse feed for the shelter. When you are giving your money to PETA or HSUS you might as well throw your money away, because they live a sweet life while weak minded give up their money for a losing cause. Do not be a home grown terrorist! Support your local shelter!

Shugotenshi said...That's kind of extreme, don't you think? Seriously...human breast milk. I doubt you will find enough of that to make even ONE pint of ice cream. Mothers realize that breast milk is vital to their babies health. So getting it will be hard. Cows were made for milkin' I doubt they would have super utters if they weren't. Trust me I'm sympathetic towards animals and all but human breast milk in Ben and Jerry's is just too extreme. I like my ice cream the way it is.

Janette said...While I do agree that many of PETAs antics are extreme at best, and downright offputting at worst, I would like every one to step off of their social hierarchy pedestals and look beyond the extreme request here. I can't speak for PETA, but I can say that what I gathered from this idea of using human breastmilk in place of cow breastmilk is the message that we BOTH are mammals, we BOTH produce milk to feed our young, and while human babies get to benefit from the milk that is secreted to aid their growth and development, dairy cow children get shipped off to become veal if they're male, and taken away to be raised as dairy cows if they are female. Cows who have no rights, no control over their reproductive processes (they are forcefully impregnated, gestate for 9 months and then have their babies taken away), and are looked at merely as tools for the ever expanding human consumption. None of you mentioned these facts, not without the misconstrued belief that other animal exist for our use. They existed before us, they will exist after we have killed ourselves off (through overpopulation, diseases of excess or war), and I think that future generations will look back on the way we treat animals now and wonder what delusions we lived under. BTW, if you didn't know, there are many brands of soy ice cream that are delicious and taste like the real thing, so using human milk is completely unecessary. Case in point-- PETA just wanted to shock you guys into realizing that we are ALL animals, ALL earthlings, and we need to treat one another with respect and compassion. Both human and non-human animals.

Tangi said...I like the well treatment of animals but PETA does and says ridiculous things. They must be out of their mind. Using human breast milk! I don't want to eat ice cream that came from some womans breast who I don't even know.
And like others said, what are they going to do if they opted to do this? Have lactating women lined up and give?
