Birthday gifts for girls under $20
Categories: Preschoolers, Kids 5-7, Kids 8-11, Toys & Games, Birthdays
I'm all about no-gift birthday parties, not because I'm cheap, but because my kids have too much stuff as it is. But not everyone feels the same way, and several times this month we've found ourselves wandering Target not sure if five-year-old boys like Transformers or Spiderman or Ben10 the best. And what, exactly, are Bionicles?
Next time, I'll call my nephew and ask him for a little direction. In the meantime, since girls are something I do know a little about, here are several great gifts for girls under $20. If you've got a classmate birthday coming up, something on this list is sure to be a hit.

My grandmother always gave little boys the same thing (and girls too if they wanted it), and it was always a big hit: She gave them a real working toolkit, with some wood and metal to construct things with. It was always the best gift.
I almost always give small children the same present (unless I know them well enough to know what they want, or their parent is willing to suggest better gifts): Craft supplies. They never go out of fashion. Crayons, paint, a smock, some paper, and maybe one or two "exotic" items. Or, if you really hate the parents: Lots and lots of stickers. The kids'll have a blast, anyway :)

My 2 1/2 year old is invited to two parties this month. One of them is for the daughter of my best friend. I'm giving her little girl a gift card to Build A Bear and then a cool card with stickers or something small. This way the child feels like they are getting a gift but the real gift doesn't get lost in the avalanche of new toys. And then my friend (mom) gets to choose when her little girl is ready for a new toy. It gives the control back to her mom.

I always give young children a book. Toys are ridiculous if you ask me!
