Youth ATV's - Product Recall
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the recall of about 1,200 2008-2009 Can-Am® Youth ATVs. In the case of rider ejection when the cord strap is pulled, the shutoff switch can fail to disable the engine. The ATV can then operate uncontrolled until the engine returns to idle. This can cause all kinds of problems, including collisions with bystanders, vehicles or other objects.
The ATV's were made in Vietnam by Vietnam Precision Industrial for BRP U.S. Inc., of Sturtevant, Wisconsin. They were sold at authorized Can-Am® dealers nationwide from August 2007 through September 2008 for about $3,400 each.
The recall involves model year 2008-2009 Can-Am® DS 90 X ATVs that are black with yellow and orange trim. You can find the model name located on the side panels.
If you have one of the recalled ATV's, you should immediately stop your children from using it and contact any Can-Am® dealer to schedule a free repair. Consumers are also being sent a direct notice from BRP.
For more information, contact BRP by calling (888) 638-5397 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or by visiting their Web site.

Haley said...When I was seven I had my own dirtbike. If you learn how to ride properly and have adult supervision then you won't get hurt. The worst I ever did was get a bloody nose because I hit a soft spot in some dirt and fell on my face which cause my HELMET to slam into my face. If you don't wanmt your kid riding an ATV then don't buy them but if you want your kid to have one and can afford it then you should get one. Just because you cannot afford an ATV you shouldn't complain about the people that can. My member of my family had dirtbikes (except my mom) and we took them out every weekend as a bonding type thing.

My twin boys have been riding ATVs since they were 4 years old they are now 11 and wear all safety equipment at all times. No accidents of any kind. They never are allowed to ride unless my husband or I are riding with them. It is a great OUTDOOR activity and beats sitting on lazy butts all day watching TV or playing retarded viedo games getting fat. An ATV is not a toy, it is a recreational vehicle that, riden with care, respect and safety can be an enjoyable time for all.
To all others that support ATV riding kudos to you! The key words here is "Parental Responsability"

I really love the Mental Midgets who don't know the first thing about ATV's but want to have them banned (I compare them to the folks who haven't seen the movie or read the book but want to ban it anyway). It all comes down to personal responsibility and we haven't had any of that since the 50's. Now we're all victims. I see it every day in all kinds of situations and I have to laugh to keep from crying. I believe it all started in grade school when one kid fired a spit ball and instead of finding the guilty party thw whole class was punished. Personaly I live in a country that provides me with freedom. Freedom to make individual choices for me and my children. I'd like to keep it that way.
PS I would not buy a product made in China or Vietnam in the first place. That is freedom of choice and that is another story

the 80 man said...At the raced we'd ask "where is your kid this weekend?"
The common answer was" got hurt on his/her bicycle".
I say we ban bikes, atv's, roller blades, snow boards, baseball, football, and anything else these hitler loving, overbearing, over oppinionated goofs can think of.
I'd hate to be one of those ppl's kids.
Get your 12 yr old a coloring book and crayons and tell them to have fun eh.

Trent said...We have this quad for our kids. They have a blast on it and WE have control over the speed of it. We have raised them on ATV's and they know thier own limits very well. We have limits on them too, and ours are much tighter than thiers would be. Our daughter had her first race on it a few weeks ago and everybody was SAFE ,,, OMFG they were all safe.
Now on the CEO comment ... I work for a cable company , so far from wealthy. There is a reason we bought THIS QUAD .. SAFETY. Do some research and learn before bashing others. A quad that is 43 in wide vs one that is 32 in wide = MORE stability !!
I would bet the ones whining here dont let thier own kids outside in fear of germs. Let them eat dirt for goodness sake , it might actually build up imunity instead your FAT LAZY kid sitting there in front of a tv watching Barny for 12 millionth time.

And by the way if you can have a SAFE race quad then you can plan on about $10,000 at LEAST for one. My son has gotten hurt MORE in our yard playing with the neighbors kids then he has racing...He plays football and races..thats what he lives for!It was totally his choice but since this is what HE wants to do it is the STUPID Parents that have to make them as safe as possible. I know that accidents happen. They could happen when your child is riding his bike around. Come on give it a rest. Have ANY of you complaining about this ever been to a race. Have ANY of you ever seen ALL THE PROTECTIVE GEAR that these kids wear. Our son knows each and every time he gets on his quads he HAS to wear his helmet. ITS CALLED REASPONABILTY PEOPLE!!!

Yes, we have ATV's-not this one, but 7 others-ranging from small to adult and from two to four wheels. We take safety courses every yr to stay current. We use proper safety equipment and watch our children closely. My 13yo has wiped out w/o injury and with minor cuts and scrapes---but she got a minor paper cut cleaning out her binder last week. (That's it--take her out of school) And, OMG my 6yo rides too---
Both girls have been riding for yrs and love it, never been sent to the hospital because of the ATV's.
Actually, thinking about it--we have never been to the ER because of soccer, basketball, baseball/softball, dance, cheerleading, horseback riding or recreational vehicles---we get to go because we washed her hair (6yo-2 at the time) and she had an allergic reation to the same shampoo I had used since birth on her. Or because the oldest- hit her hand against her headboard trying to make her bed in a hurry and broke two fingers. I guess they should stay dirty and live filthy and they would be safer(; Of course, if we do that CPS would be knocking at the do screaming neglect.
Oh, whatever shall I do? Oh, yeah--teach my children to live and enjoy life while being educated about the hobbies they choose.

Jody said...One of the most devastating things that could ever happen to anyone, did this summer. My husband struck and killed a 9 yr old who was driving a full size ATV without a helmet and without adult supervision. He pulled up out of the ditch on a country road right in front of my husband's pickup. He struck the 3rd grader who flew into the ditch and then he ran over the ATV. This is something that he will have to live with for the rest of his life. The horror of causing a child's death even though it was ruled accidental and no charges were filed. For all of you parents who continue to allow your children to ride an ATV that is for 16 yrs of age and older, who do not require a helmet, and do not supervise your children, I wish you could for a minute feel the sorrow that these parents are going through when they yearn for their child back. Life is so fragile and we need to do everything in our power to protect the children in our lives who do not have the ability or the capacity to make adult decisions when they operate machinery that is so powerful. Please reconsider providing a safe environment for your child so that they can enjoy their lives into their adulthood and so that we can eliminate the needless suffering of the victims of the accidents that occur because of a disregard for safety. Remember, accidents can be prevented.

I think the parents of this young man deserve sympathy and blame--wrong size ATV for him, lack of proper education or disregard for rules, and a lack of proper supervision all led to the accident. We ride on 75 acres on trails we own. The trails are cleared and marked for safety, the dirtbike track is checked before every ride and supervised, and we review and clarify the rules each time we ride. If we see recklessness, your off until you take a refresher course.
My kids are kids and I want them to have a chance to do everything. My oldest has fallen from a horse because she let go at the wrong time-she got right back up. Now, she is beginning to help break the horses we train. Of course, she is learning and very supervised...but she is out there.
We have been on a plane, how many plane crashes have there been? We drive our kids to school, how many car crashes are there daily? We eat food, how many people choke each yr?
With a little common sense kids can live and learn with little to no problems

pkay said...If these people think 3400. for the quad is bad, they should see the price of all the protective gear we make them wear. At least the ones of us who ARE responsible enough to do so and teach them saftey and do constantly supervise. Our children never ride without us, we have met to many in the woods, ect. who do. Not a mistake we are gonna make. Our grandkids are starting to ride. At 5 we are teaching him slowly. He rides with one of us own until he learns the stearing technique then he'll graduate up. You can't just through them on and let them go. My 12 yr old races in competitions. It is his chosen sport. Yes, sometimes there are injuries but working in a physicians office I could give you instances of injuries in every sport. Esp. football. Saftey, Training, Responsibility thats the key. That's what all good coaches teach.

Rollie said...If you don't want to buy your kid an ATV, DON'T! its that simple, but don't call other people out about it, to the person that said the smaller versions are the same thinsg scaled down, your INCORRECT, they have full floorboards, throttle limiter, hand brakes, They aren't very fast at all either, I guess i was one of those spoiled kids that had a small quad when i was 11, well look at me now, I now have a $14,000 race ATV that i payed for with my money, riding and racing has taught me responiblity, has kept me FAR away from drugs and drinking, Has taught me to work hard, and gave me a reason to try hard in school...Me and my father travel to different states almost every weekend racing, i now have friends from across the country, have been more places than alot of people have been in a life time, and experienced alot of positive things, I've become alot more outgoing aswell, and im only 18!. So if you want to keep your kids off an ATV or dirtbike, no body is stoping you, but your sheltering them from an amazing community of riders that will teach them all the things ive mentions, not to mention some amazing family bonding time!, but don't try to stop the parents that let there kids have fun in different ways such as riding!
Thank you

Product Blog said...It seems like there is a new product recall every few days. I am especially concerned about all the recalls on ATVs and household products. I now have a personal file that alerts me to tools, office furniture, and household product recalls. I also receive timely notices when one of my ATVs has been recalled. You can receive the recalls and update notices at the product blog page.
