Doll pulled over Islamic message
Filed under: In The News, Weird But True, Toys
Elmo Live may be the hot toy of the season this year, but it's a cute little baby doll who is getting all the attention right now. Fisher Price's Little Mommy Real Loving Baby Cuddle and Coo doll is supposed to utter only one actual word: Mama. The rest of the sounds emanating from the speakers inside the doll are just cooing and giggling sounds. Or are they? Some say they hear the words "Islam is the Light" among the baby babble are demanding the toy be removed from the shelves. Gary Rofkahr of Owasso, Oklahoma says he bought the doll and was shocked by what he heard. "I have a 1-year-old granddaughter," he said. "It makes me mad that someone is trying to indoctrinate our children with an innocent toy."
But wait, there's more. Others say in addition to promoting Islam, the doll also utters the phrase "Satan is King". Now, that makes absolutely no sense to me as Islam is most definitely not a pro-Satan religion. Is someone trying to indoctrinate our children or just confuse them?
This may sound like a few parents getting up in arms over what is in all likelihood just a misunderstanding, but the Wal-Mart in Owasso is taking it seriously. They've pulled the doll from the shelves. And in response to emails from a local television station, Fisher Price's parent company, Mattell, has issued a statement on the matter. They admit that one of the baby noises may indeed sound like the word "light", but insist that the rest is just gibberish. "We have found that if told to listen for a particular phrase, you may hear something similar due to the power of suggestion," the statement says.
Have a listen for yourself and tell us what you hear.

Jim from New York said...The people of Owasso OK need to get their heads out of their a**** and get a life. I have lisened to this and to me it sounds like "Is that a light " or "I see a light " or ANYTHING else that even remotely sounds like "light"....or, actually IT SOUNDS LIKE BABY GIBBERISH . !!!! (and fyi, -As a Christian myself -- yes, there ARE Christians in New York - I would advise you to read up on your Islam...its all about love and peace. Compare that to OUR history, my friend..Since the fuss is over that if this doll WERE saying such a thing, that would be bad.)

W. Ingle said...I went to Target and bought one of the dolls. This reminds me of the talking Teletubbies brouhaha some years back; one of them said something claimed to be (and sounding like), "Faggot, faggot! Faggot, faggot! Faggot, faggot! Bite my butt!" I bought that one, too, and I'm glad I did. My little Fisher Price doll DOES sound like it's saying, "Islam is the light," but the rest is definitely gibberish (w/the exception of "mama"). The "Satan is king" claim has no basis, except in the tenuous stretch of an hysterical imagination. And speaking of hysterical, keep flipping-out over this silliness, people. Pull the dolls! Maybe mine'll be worth a fortune one day!

Karla said...omg and did you also know that in the lion king the word "sex" appears and in aladin he says "hey kids, take off your clothes"
sheesh, kids will hear things no matter what, and do you really think a 1 year old will start turning to Allah because of the doll? she wouldn't even understand it, as most kids who would hear that or watch those movies, they're not looking for the undertones, like parents are...

Hayley said...My husband bought this doll for my daughter over 6 months ago. We have never 'noticed' the doll saying those words, however, most of the time we were trying to figure out how to turn the doll off as she can be very annoying.
Crazy enough, after reading this article, I listened and it is VERY clear. I haven't heard the "Satan is King" - but you can definitely hear the doll making sounds that sounds exactly like "Islam is the light." Am I going to take it away from my daughter? Probably not. She's two and has no idea what the fuss is about. :)
