How do you show support for your presidential candidate? Signs in your yard? Bumper stickers on your car? Maybe you just show up and vote on the first Tuesday in November? Whatever you do, I'll bet it doesn't compare to what this dad in Elizabethton, Tennessee did: he named his newborn daughter Sarah McCain Palin. Without his wife's knowledge. That's hardcore.
Mark Ciptak and his wife had settled on the perfectly lovely name of Ava Grace for their third child. But Ciptak decided that he needed to "to get the word out" about the Republican ticket for president and vice president and secretly filled in the birth certificate with a combination of John McCain's and Sarah Palin's names.
And how did his wife and the mother of his child take the news? "I don't think she believes me yet," he told a local paper. "It's going to take some more convincing."
"I took one for the cause," he said. "I can't give a lot of financial support for the (McCain/Palin) campaign. I do have a sign up in my yard, but I can do very little."
Sarah McCain Palin is a nice name and all, but who does this? I don't mean who would name their child after political candidates - I mean who would risk the wrath of a mother by secretly changing the name of her child? If he really wanted to take one for the cause, perhaps he should have changed his own name. Any bets on how long he will be sleeping on the couch?

Sarah is a great name and McCain and Palin are good Americans but this is a name this girl will have her whole life and if she is teased for it could cause her much distress. Plus what if she decides she wants to be a democrat?

conniegoggins said...Hey, I know Republicans do not believe a woman should be able to make a choice about her body, but it should be written in stone that the person who risks their life by being pregnant for 9 months and then going through labor or major surgery is the one who should get final say in naming the baby. I say a petition should be started that makes it illegal for a father to secretly change the birth certificate name of a baby while his baby momma is recovering from childbirth and/or major surgery and taking care of said child while daddy-o is using the wonderful birth of his child to make a political statement??? I guess a more succint way to say this is "what a dumbass!!"
And macjc, you said it, a couple should be free to name their child whatever they choose. This is the problem and it is not liberal versus conservative. This man secretly changed the birth certificate name of his baby without the baby's mother's consent. What would be your opinion if a man secretly changed the name of his baby to Joe Obama Biden without his wife's and the baby's mother's permission. Now who sounds like a dumbass -- macpjc and rachelb4321.
And jane and ame s, please stop the tired old jokes about Southerners marrying their siblings. That is just as tired and old as trying to scare Southerners into not voting for the Obama/Biden because, omg, he doesn't look like the the old white goats who are usually elected. Well, Joe Biden still has that stereotypical old white male appeal, so the only thing the Democrat ticket is lacking is a female. And while I would have voted for Hillary Clinton in a heartbeat, the thought of Sarah Palin being a heartbeat away from the presidency scares me more than a rabid charging caribou on a hockey (is it field, arena, court?); hey we play football, basketball, and baseball here in the south, so who needs a hockey mom that thinks she doesn't know much about the Deep South because she isn't familiar with Missouri, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois?!?.

JHZ said...conniegoggins, I am a woman and a Republican, and I do believe for the most part that women have the right to decide what to do with their own bodies...here's the problem you face, however, when you apply this rule to abortions...when a woman has an abortion, she is not deciding what to do with just her body, but the body of a completely separate living human being growing inside of her. If you check the statistics, the majority of abortions are not from rape or incest...most of these women made the choice to have sex, and therefore took a risk of getting pregnant...period. The old phrase, "Abortion stops a beating heart" still holds true...what "rights" did the innocent owners of those hearts have??
10-22-2008 @ 1:35AM
conniegoggins said...It is true that most abortions are not due to rape or incest, but do you or anyone really believe any woman or girl just goes for an abortion with a light heart and no personal soul-searching? No one is pro-abortion; the message is pro-choice. And while many Americans are pro-choice, most (including me) do not have any problem with banning late term abortions (unless a mother's life is in danger and then again it is her choice to take the risk or not) and most (including me) do not have a problem with waiting periods; in fact, going home and thinking over the situation should be required, in my opinion. In the end, this is a very personal and private decision that is between a woman, her family and her physician and the government (in particular, men!!) should butt out. Think about how much better America could be if we looked at all issues from a moderate viewpoint (center, not left or right).
And remember, ending an unwanted pregnancy has always been part of human history, at least as long as we have written records. In early history, certain herbs were used. In more recent times, in the last couple of hundred years I think, more dangerous methods of inserting a sharp instrument were used. And, of course, we have all heard of the butcher doctors of the 1900's that helped get laws passed that stopped the prosecution of abortion and the doctors and woman involved. Legalization allowed physicians to perform this procedure in a much safer way. Of course there are still risks, though not as high as the risks of pregnancy. And no reasonable person can deny the emotional and moral issues any woman faces if she finds it necessary to seriously contemplate ending a pregnancy, for any reason. The point of pro-choice is to be just that -- put the choice in the hands of the woman, not government or churches, and realize, no one is pro-abortion. And the choice may actually be to have a baby, give up a baby for adoption, or not get pregnant in the first place. Pro-choice does not just involve the choice to end a pregnancy. Any reasonable woman would not use abortion as birth control and thankfully, better birth control methods of the last 50 years or so has allowed women much more choice in regard to their reproductive options. Can you imagine the choices of women 100 years ago? You either stopped having sexual relations with your husband or you got pregnant every year or so. And I say, "got pregnant", because these dangerous, frequent pregnancies ended in miscarriage or stillborn babies very often and so many women died young in childbirth. So the birth control choice has eliminated the deaths of many fetuses, babies, and women and though there is no way to put numbers on deaths prevented, they probably outnumber abortions by a huge number.
I cannot say what my choice would be regarding abortion because I have never been faced with an unwanted pregnancy. But I am 49 years old, heading into menopause because I have irregular periods and my husband had a vasectomy years ago. I have a 25 year old son and a 14 year old son. If somehow the vasectomy failed and I became pregnant, this would be a very soul searching decision and I can see where ending the pregnancy might be the right choice for me. But I cannot make this judgement for myself unless faced with this situation, let alone make a choice for someone else.
If you take the view that God decides when a baby is conceived, then taking the step to say any kind of birth control is against God's will as the Catholic church does is just the next step in violating the privacy and choice of woman concerning their reproductive rights. God has given us free will and each of us should make these type decisions for ourselves and not be violated by government or organized religion's violation of our privacy and personal choice. I don't know your views on birth control per se, but I strongly believe a stance against birth control is dangerous, irresponsible and an example of the very worst policies of Catholicism.
And, by the way, I am not a Republican or a Democrat, but an Independent. Vote for the person not the party, vote for moderate, central views and policies, because extreme right or left politics is a sure way to polarize and divide America, not unite it.
Thank you for your reply and it is wonderful to be in a free America where debate is possible.

As someone who grew up in Tennessee and has a father from the mountains and a mother from the boonies, I can safely say that none of my relatives have married their siblings, cousins, or any relatives for that matter. It's a sad, damned shame that the best you people can do is retire behind old, worn-out stereotypes to attack, ad hominem, someone who you have no clue about. Yes, he made a stupid decision, but that trait is not exclusive to Tennessee, or the south. It's sadly a worldwide epidemic that there is no real cure for, and your actions on this forum just prove my point.

I'm not voting at all. Only because I'm not going to be living in this country much longer. Personal decision. Nothing to do with the government and all. But I'm not gonna be responsible for who makes it in there, but anyway! Ava Grace was a pretty name. Then dear old dad eff's it up. Ugh. All for the cause, he says. How about you just make a BIGGER sign. See, THAT makes sense
