Best Halloween costumes for newborns

Having a new baby can be tough. You're just not sure what to do, half the time, and trying to communicate with the little guy or gal can be daunting when you haven't yet learned the nuances of your newborn. Having a new baby around the holidays can add a layer of stress as you try to do it all--after all, life doesn't stop just because you brought a new life into the world! Things get ever more complicated when Halloween is one of your favorite holidays and you simply can't find a thing for your newborn to wear!
Halloween costume is a pain in the butt anyway, for adults and kids. Finding a costume that fits and isn't too stuffy or revealing that also happens to not cost $100 can seem impossible. When you have a newborn, the chances that you'll be handmaking costumes for your children might just go out the window. Even so, you'll be able to pull it together for the non-newborns because there's nothing if not a million choices of kids' costumes out there, sold anywhere from fancy boutiques to your local drug stores, and, in some cases, on the street.
For newborns, weather will be a large factor in what your baby wears. Also, your baby really ought to be old enough to go out of the house before you decide to dress her, so she has to at least had a set of shots. I'd still not be inclined to take my newborn, regardless of clever outfit, to a crowded, loud costume party. That said, if you and your new one are game, there are plenty of easy, comfortable choices for him or her to wear and still look cute. Luckily, since there's so little material involved, the costumes are pretty cheap too.
One of my friends did make a costume for her newborn daughter, who went as a chili pepper. Mom took a red sleepsack and secured the extra-long end into a point so baby still had plenty of wiggle room, then fashioned a green hat that looked like a pepper top out of felt. It was simply adorable. For those of us slinging our newborns, take three pieces of round, green felt and either sew or clip (in a way that won't pose a choking hazard to your child) onto said sling, and, voila, you have a pea-in-a-pod costume.

My goddaughters' mom and dad always go as football fan (mom) and football player (dad) for a certain team...every...year...long before the children came along. When the second was born, I had great idea. She was only one month old at the time. I dyed a onesie brown, cut holes down the front and used a while shoelace to turn her into a football. we added brown sweatpants for the cooler weather.
We dressed big sister up as a cheerleader. They were a HIT at every costume function we attended (especially the football).
Very cheap, very easy, and a HUGE hit!

My 8.5 week old is going as Olivia Newton John... Solid color onesie, leg warmers, and a few pieces of sweatsuit material (around her head & wrists) and she'll be ready to "Get Physical"...lol...
I don't see the point in paying a lot of money for a costume at this age.
Oh, and I didn't realize that a set of shots was required for her to go out in public. My pediatrician has encouraged me to take her out since day one (avoiding schools/day cares/etc. and after she was 1 month old even those weren't off limits.) Not trying to be rude, just saying what I was told.

My first child was 3 weeks old at Halloween. We found her a Build-a-Bear fairy costume and put it over a pink sleeper. She was very cute (and very pissed when I tried to take pics with the crown on her head!) Extra benefit: An outfit for the bear we built for her when we found out we were having a girl!
My son came home from NICU 2 weeks before Halloween, so he dressed up in the preemie pumpkin outfit we had from my sister, who's first son was born 6 days before Halloween.
And, no, I didn't take either of them out to parties. I took my daughter to a few neighbors I knew wanted to meet her and then we hung out in Daddy's Haunted House (Garage). My son hung out at home with Grandma while his 2 yr old sister and I went to a few houses trick-or-treating with her cousin.

How do you take her to get her shots if she isn't old enough to go out of the house?
