Catholic priest set to give birth
Filed under: Bump Watch, Life & Style, Religion & Spirituality
Remember the old joke about a man and his son are involved in an accident but when the boy arrives at the hospital, the surgeon says "I cannot operate on him; he is my son"? The joke is that the surgeon is the boy's mother. Today, no one thinks twice about female doctors so that joke doesn't work so well. The Catholic Church, however, has not progressed as far.And yet, not only is there a female Catholic priest in St. Louis, Missouri, but she is pregnant to boot. Part of the Ecumenical Catholic Communion, Jessica Rowley was ordained September 7, 2007 and became the associate pastor of Sts. Clare & Francis church in St. Louis. Rowley is married to a protestant priest; when asked whether their child would be raised Catholic or Protestant, she said "It's a topic of conversation in our home a lot. We're going to baptize him in both churches. But eventually he'll be able to make a decision for himself."
I'm not sure the priests at my old church would totally approve of this situation, but then again, we all might be less surprised had it happened here instead of in Missouri. Nonetheless, congratulations to father, er, pastor Rowley and her husband!

Don said...I can recall reading that up until 1000AD priest were able to marry, it was then that the catholic church decided that instead priests should not get married and give all their land rights and belongings to the church.
I'm surprised that neither one of them has been asked to step down yet.

Baron said...The Ecumenical Catholic Communion does not recognize the authority of the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church does not recognize her as a priest (I have to imagine that they probably don't consider the Ecumenical Catholic Communion to be Catholic - talking about Roman Catholic really and not the universal Catholic church - either). Since she was married in the first place, I'm sure the Ecumenical Catholic Communion didn't doubt she would get pregnant at some point.

MarkF said...Why bother to ask if they're going to raise the child Catholic? This woman's not Catholic at all. She's certainly knows that what she's doing is against the Church so she's a heretic, and if she knows that heresy results in excommunication, then she's been excommunicated.
I guess the headlines grabs attention but you really should put in there somewhere that this woman is an excommunicated person and not a Catholic priest.
