Obama is a bad word at some Mississippi schools
Filed under: In The News
For the past few days, everywhere I go I hear people talking about our new President-Elect Barack Obama. The overwhelming majority of these overheard conversations are between excited young people, thrilled with his victory and giddy with excitement over our country's future. I have also heard conversations between McCain supporters who are disappointed with the way things turned out and apprehensive about what will happen next.
However you feel about Obama's victory, it is good to know that here in America, we are free to celebrate or criticize to our heart's content. Well, most of us are. Some students in Mississippi have found that the mere mention of Obama's name can get them in trouble.
The ACLU has received complaints from students and parents in that state claiming they are being told not to say Barack Obama's name or wear shirts or other items expressing their support for the President-Elect. At Pearl Junior High School, two students were kicked off the bus for daring to utter Obama's name. Players for the girls' basketball team were told they would be suspended if they spoke Obama's name. And at Puckett Attendance Center, two students were informed that Barack Obama was only to be discussed in history class, not in other classes or in the halls.
Why would these so-called authority figures want to silence conversations about our soon-to-be president? I am going to resist the urge to speculate on that. Let me just quote, in part, from a memorandum sent to high school teachers in Magee, Mississippi: "Seeing history in the making and being a part of that process is a wonderful thing. Many of you are excited because of this. Others are not. It is absolutely critical that we not use this election as a divisive event."
Because haven't we had enough divisiveness?

I know for a fact that the social studies department in our school took time to address the election, as they did before the election, as it was part of the learning process. I do not appreciate being accused of preventing my students from voicing their opinions. I did not discuss the election before and did not discuss it afterwards. Also, I have many students who parents live in the North that send their children to good ole Mississippi to be raised by their aunts, grandparents, etc, black and white, so if we are so bad, why do we get so many kids to be raised here!!

There were major arguments going on between students, fights in locker rooms, yelling matches on the school bus and classes being distracted. I don't blame the school at all. It will be a touchy for awhile. Mainly until egos get calmed down. A friend of my daughters was talking to other students on the bus the day after election. They were talking about the election and some students were happy that Obama won. He (being very educated on politics...yes he's only 15). asked why. And guess what..."because he's black." Skin color will proceed over the fact that he is biracial. This entire election has been a "black" topic. Consistently talking about how we will make history (but not a lot of talk about how we could make history with a female vice president), the interviews of the day of election saying I have been waiting for this since my march with MLK. Oprah, Spike Lee and Will Smith so excited and showing tears. 95% of African Americans voting for Obama. Yes race. And written on a car, not far from me, in black shoe polish "you can't tell me what to do my president is black." So until everyone can calm down. And sad to say accept the fact that he will be our president. This election should not be mentioned in school, except history or gov. class. Everyone seems to think his racial background will help , I seem to think this is going to be one of the bigger race wars going on. As you also notice is tone and dialect changes depending on the group he is talking to. Even he mentions that. So yes, ban conversation, ban product regarding this, for the time being at least. And god help us all the next four years... (oh by the way on a different subject. Look at his connections and donations received from Freddie Mac along with his chief of staff. also look up how in 2003 President Bush tried to take control of Freddie Mac and democrats shot that down.)

Molly, everybody does that. It's an accepted phenomenon known as code-switching. It helps that he's bidialectical, I suppose - and an important part of that, like being bilingual, is knowing when to use which dialect.

rodney said...to Molly, Are you suggesting that a race war will occur in the US because a human being who is bi-racial,was elected to be the next president? So are you admitting that America is a big lie? That it is not a nation that behaves like Christ? That the nation does not have the intellectual curosity to handle democracy? Perhaps that would explain why so many right wingers seem to prefer a drinking buddy or a plummer in control of our weapons of mass destruction.

It sounds like most of the disagreements between students are RACIALLY motivated. My daughters went from unprejudiced Colorado to Alabama it is was quite the culture shock we saw racisim first hand. So I am not surprised this is happening in the SOUTH. I am so glad to see a black man as our president in America everything is truly possible. As for Sara Palin yes she was a woman and if that was all you wanted in your VP then you had it but she was in no way qualified. As a woman I was personally insulted that she was picked and was going to vote for Mcain because I am a conservative but I was totally turned off by her. I am PROUD to have voted for OBAMA I do not see the color of peoples skin.

Molly said...First of all let me say this I don't care if he is black or white. I am saying it is sad that he will be our president because I think that it was a terrible choice. His views, approvals, disapprovals, and connection to "things" like Freddie Mac and Acorn are very questionable. I think that he is going to crash the "American Dream." Taxing someone more because they make more money is wrong just so he can redistribute the wealth. The "wealthy" is all ready severely taxed. His taxing is going to drive yet more jobs overseas and take out small businesses. I think that his support of illegal aliens is wrong! And those are just a few.
Second, What has Palin done? She has managed her "own" city as mayor for two terms. Declined to run for a senate seat because her son asked her not to because he wanted her home completely. She was also elected Gov of Alaska as the first women and the youngest Gov. beating out the incumbent gov. She has some great ideas and beliefs. She would be fresh blood in Washington! Obama was a senator. Did not run or manage a city nor a state. Unlike McCain he has no military experience. Why do you say Palin is not qualified? I would love to hear your answer.
Third, like I stated above I am in no way racist against blacks. But the media has made this into a race issue. Again 95% of African Americans voted for him and I do have a hard time believing that it was because his platform. Watch the interviews the day of the election, a lot about race. "I've waited for this day...." . When people start voting simiply based on color of skin then yes you are making a huge issue out of race. And when you elect someone that wants to strength affrimative action then that shows me that race issues will be heightened during is term. As a senator of Illinois he wanted to help to make sure black men had access to jobs stating: "It's heartbreaking that 3 out of 4 black children born are born to unmarried mothers in Illinois. Some of it is just making sure that African-American men have access to jobs. There's been the devastation as we lose manufacturing jobs that disproportionately hurts African-Americans" Source: Meet The Press, NBC News Jul 25, 2004. Does that not show a focus on race? And if you really believe that there are single/unmarried moms out there because black men can't get a job. WOW
Joan you stated "I am so glad to see a black man as our president in America everything is truly possible." So it seems to me that you are also looking at the color of his skin. What is it about him that you do like? You also made a comment about the "SOUTH". I am southern and very proud of it. Your comment showed prejudice against the south. Is geographical prejudice really any better than racism?
Rodney, not everyone is perfect. Obama was raised both in the Muslim and Christian schools. The pastor from the church that Obama went to for what, 20 years, was anit-American and racist against whites. The pastor was in a video stating "God Damn America." Obama did not wear his flag pin as he thought it would be a distraction (and it was more of distraction since he wouldn't wear it). He also did not place his hand on his heart during the National anthem (he said he was raised to believe you only had to sing it. So in his 47 years he never learned to put his hand on his heart, he never went to a sporting event (where people put their hand on their, men take off their hats hold it over their heart or where people stop walking in the isles during the anthem) he hasn't had a chance to learn that. And lets not forget that he also removed the American Flag from his plane to put his logo on it. And you are talking about an American Lie.

So Molly, please continue to pray for this nation, as I am hoping that you also did during the last 8 years of Mr. Bush's term, that has led to this economic depression that we are in today.

karen said...Unless you know exactly what is happening in these schools, you should probably not call people racist or assume that the black students are trying to instigate some race war. But the truth is, schools can pretty much make whatever rules they want in the name of "disruption." This does smell wrong, though, and almost certainly is an overreaction. Of COURSE some kids are going to be overexcited about the president-elect -- it's historic. Think about how annoying it is when, say, a Yankees fan needles you when your beloved Red Sox lose; that's probably about the level of "harassment" going on. Perhaps school would be a good place to learn to deal with other opinions, rather than learn to suppress debate.

Delores said...I feel that it is alright for the teachers to keep this discussion in the social studies dept. It is also true that Obama is not the first African American black president as he is half white and half black, so I do not think that the blacks should think they are any better than the whites now, and we are all equal, and I pray that Obama will consider that when he is president, as I have heard that he does not like whites, and if he is going to be president he had better remember that he was born of a white mom, and his white grandparents raised him, and he should consider himself more white than black, as he was raised as a white person. We are all equal, and if this is not the case then we are in deep trouble, and this is why I did not vote for him, and could not support him as a president, as that would not be American. We want to get along, not have more troubles. Right? Then I will keep praying that his wife and him will love the whites and everyone in the good old USA.
God please help us to all get along. We are all equal in your sight.
God bless America, and let all have peace.

So either the user who had the nerve to say that blacks have gotten the idea that we run things, I would like to point out an actual fact. Blacks in this country make up about 12.4% of our country and 76% percent of our country so the last time I looked that is a pretty large chunk of the pie. So even with a president of african descent "WE BLACKS" as you say will never Run anything. And it should never be about one ethnic group running anything. This is a country made up of many different types of people who all have one thing in common we are all americans. So I wish that the few racist and ignorant people both white, black and other that are out there finally realize that and you might as well get used to it .

Agree, and yes African Americans make up about 13% of USA. You say it shouldn't be about race/ethnic group. So you can tell me that all 95% of African Americans voted for Obama because they believed in his platform? I have a heard time believing that. So yes I do think that race had a lot to play with this election, not completely but a high percentage. No I'm not racist.

Monet said...While I appreciate your comment. It is sad that you would actually ask me if the 95% of those african americans voted because they agreed with his platform. I believe that they (some who have never voted in their life), voted because they voted for Obama because he spoke of things like hope and looked at our country as a nation of people, with feelings, dreams and of course problems, that could maybe come together and move toward a common goal of peace and prosperity. It sounds like a pageant answer but it can be a reality if we stop looking at each other as ethnic groups and dollars signs. And by the way yes there are educated black people who actually do research and find out info about the candidates we vote for. There happens to be a lot of us. We just finally found a candidate we believe in and a campaign that wasn't one sided that the outcome had not been predetermined. ( It was an actual race with two legitimate respectable and qualified candidates.) So to your question yes I do believe a large group of blacks did agree with his platform and yes some may have just voted for him because he is black. But there are many McCain voters that voted for him because he wasn't black. Believe me it sounds ignorant but its true. I am from the south and many people here did just that. That is not opinion or just a racial comment its a fact. Also to the lady from Mississippi yes your state has come along way but believe me the south as a whole has a very very long way to go. This is coming from a born and raised educated southern.

that girl said...I understand that he is not to be discussed during classes when teachers are trying to teach, and that campaign gear shouldn't be worn in classrooms because it could spark arguments (as debates often devolve to in high/ middle school when they are not structured) but this is a school wide ban that includes student's free time. No such ban exists for McCain, so are they really trying to stop the school from being a poor learning envioronment or they just mad a mixed or black man won? All students should be taught to support the President, no matter his race, so long as he is doing a good job in office and is working towards the betterment of the whole United States. If you disagree with a particular stance on an issue that is one thing, but to hate him because of religion or race is another. And Obama is the President-elect, whether you like it or not. Since he won the election fairly, we as Americans must realize that means that he may be the best man for the job for the majority of Americans, even if our own personal interets doesn't neccessarily line up with what is best for America as a whole.
