How to read to your kids
Categories: Education, That's Entertainment
I don't think anyone would disagree that reading to your kids is one of the most important things you can do for them during their early years. In fact, I would even go so far as to say it should be mandatory. That would include Florida, which, according to the St. Petersburg Times, ranks 46th out of 50 in parents reading to their kids.In order to try and raise that ranking, the Times is offering some tips on reading to kids and some suggestions for favorite books. The writer suggests, among other things, using funny voices, sound effects, and accents to spice things up and keep the kids interested. "If you read in a dull, tired voice your kids will think reading is dull and tiring."
As for the books they suggest, they go straight from picture books to chapter books, but I did enjoy remembering both The Phantom Tollbooth and From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. In any case, however you do it and whatever books you use, read to your kids.

Reading aloud to kids is great, and I know when I have kids it'll be an important bedtime routine.
I used to sit for two boys, starting when they were 6 and 9. (The oldest started sixth grade last year, so I don't sit for them anymore. =[ I miss them!!!) Their dad was slowly but surely reading them all of the Harry Potter books at bedtime, and they weren't allowed to see each movie until they had finished the same book. It got them so excited about the books. Their dad started them on the Lord of the Rings trilogy too, and over time it became that they read LotR only when I came over to babysit (because they liked the way I read it). They both love to read on their own, too, in part because of this.
I miss those boys .. they were my favorite kids =]

I'm just eager to move past the "Goodnight Moon" stage! That "Goodnight nobody" part sorta creeps me out - like there's some unseen stalker that you're saying nightie, night to. No sir, I don't like it.
But we thoroughly enjoy reading the Sandra Boynton & Dr. Seuss books with our 2 yr old!!
