El Paso dance team spikes rival's brownies
Categories: Teens & tweens, Weird but true, Education
We have all heard of kids lacing foodstuffs with laxatives as a prank. It's not cool, but at least it won't cause anyone any permanent damage. But some girls on an El Paso high school dance team may have taken that idea and run just a little too far with it. Reportedly, they spiked some baked goods with something quite a bit stronger and gave them to their dance rivals at Andress High School. At this point, all the dancers have fessed up to is adding a bit of laxative to the brownie batter. But rumors are swirling that there may have been rat poison and bleach in the sweets! It doesn't sound like anyone actually ate any of the tainted brownies, but at least one parent of an intended victim is calling for criminal charges. "We felt like they weren't out just to play a prank," said Bea Saenz. "With all the stuff they put in there, it is like they were trying to kill them."
District officials are having the brownies tested but the results won't be available for weeks. In the meantime, the brownie-spiking girls have been kicked off the dance team and suspended for three days. I suppose that punishment suffices if it turns out to have been just laxatives in the brownies. But what if there was something else in there? What do you think should happen to these girls?

My God, can you imagine if the rival team HAD eaten the brownies? They would have certainly ended up in the hospital having their stomachs pumped, if they were lucky enough to live! I was on the dance team and I was also a cheerleader, and we spiked brownies with laxatives, punch with vodka, these are things I know....rat poison and bleach? That's a little sadistic, girls....put them in juvenile hall for a little while, teach them a lesson.

I'm with you girl. 3 day suspension is not enough. They are just enjoying the days off and surely do not feel like it is punishment. that's what's wrong with a lot of kids today, they ALWAYS JUST get a slap on the hand and never learn from anything. The juvenile detention centers need to be utilized a little more to teach these kids a lesson.

okay... first of all i want it to be clarified that it was a dance team and NOT the cheerleaders!
secondly, prison time?!? or juvenile detention... whatever... thats absolutely ridiculous if it was ONLY laxatives that were put in the brownies... i mean, really?! you really want them to serve jail time for that?!?! good lord... i get that there is TALK about them putting rat poison and bleach in them, but that has not been proven, nor has it been disproven either... BUT as we all know.. you are innocent until proven guilty! not the other way around... i think people are taking this way WAY to seriously...
you focus on this.. what about the senior - freshman initiation ((hazing)) ohhh no, the poor girls almost took laxatives... dear lord, if anything they were helping them lose a few pounds.... its nothing to freak out about... i can not believe this is an issue that is a TOP STORY on the aol welcome screen...
BEYOND RIDICULOUS!!

To Monet:
" But what if there was something else in there? What do you think should happen to these girls?"
The question was what should happen if it were more than laxatives added. Deep breath, dear.

I am an El Paso native and I resent anyone speaking badly about all of El Paso, shame on you! The rat poison and clorox are just rumors, so until they are proven guilty, stop making assumptions!!! The district is taking care of this matter, it doesn't happen overnight!
Gayla 11-13-2008 @ 12:29PM
Only in Texas!!!! This reminds me of the cheerleaders mother in Harris county hiring a hit man to kill off the other cheerleader.

When do we start making people responsible for their actions.
this is dangerous and really speaks more about the core of people not caring about anyone else but themselves.

Wow, everyone is so quick to judge on rumors and speculation... When I was in High School we gave each other laxatives, and it was funny, and no, it wouldn't be funny IF there was bleach and rat poison in them, but I also know that those rumors are likely to spread very quickly in a high school setting... Odds are pretty good these girls are telling the truth and there were only laxatives in the brownies... Besides, if police had found bleach and rat poison in the brownies, don't you think the news would know that, being they would be facing charges of attempted man-slaughter... It's just a little silly when a prank gets out of hand... If you were deciding their fates with these votes, how would you feel about sending them to prison after you found out the rumors weren't even true?
P.S. - I've NEVER known anyone who ate something given to them by their rival school... Ya kinda expect it to be "tampered with"...
Kevin 11-13-2008 @ 1:31PM
Did anybody notice the part where it said it was "rumored" to have bleach and rat poison?
That doesn't mean they did, maybe they really did put rat poison and bleach, but maybe they really did only put laxatives in the brownies.
Ya'll can't say o they need to be put in jail right away, because they don't know for sure if they really did.
Melissa 11-13-2008 @ 2:11PM
WOW....I had no idea I would get so many replies to a comment....I said IF the rival team ate the brownies and they had been other things in there, what would have happened....and note to the "El Paso Native"....I never said anything bad about El Paso, or Texas, or any other state, I said if they put rat poison and bleach in there, it was a little sadistic....I also never said anything bad about cheerleaders! Read Monet, I WAS a cheerleader as well as being on the dance team, and it was also kind of rude to say they were "helping them lose a few pounds", jeez....Well, thanks to everyone who agreed with me that the little b****es need to be taught a lesson if it comes out that it was more then laxatives (helloooo, do you think they would really ADMIT to anything other then that, if they didn't have to right away?), and to all you ignorant people that think we are horrible for saying they need to be taught a lesson....well, I hope you never have to deal with your kids being on the rival team and eating the tainted brownies (because how do you KNOW they are from the rival team, we didn't when it happened to us!), laxative or otherwise....have a nice day.
ninainindia 11-12-2008 @ 11:54PM
So is there any proof that there was anything more in the cake than laxatives? It says rumours are swirling about rat poison and bleeach. Rumours often turn out to not be true.
If it was a little bit of laxative I say suspension is enough, otherwise they need to be charged. So first thing is to actually test the things to find out what was inside and if there was any danger.

If you read the article, it said that the school district IS having the brownies tested for anything more than just laxatives. If indeed there is something MORE THAN laxatives that could have caused bodily harm then the girls should definitely have charges filed.

After living in El Paso for 15 yrs.. (and so glad we moved) I am not suprised that these girls did such a thing.. there are so many self absorbed nasty people there.. be it laxitives or poison.. they put it in there intending to do some sort of damage.. and should actually pay some sort of consequence instead of getting a slap on the hand. Which happens a lot in el paso.. If they get off with this small punishment.. they will learn nothing and laugh that they basically got away with what could have possibly been something even more sinister, 3 days of suspention please!!! they will just be laughing it up at home for 3 days off from school.. People need to take more control over their kids and stop being afraid of them.

If this happened to me, I would file assault charges. These were high school students? I'm 23 and even as a high schooler I thought things like this were immature. I was by no means a party pooper, but knowingly allowing someone to ingest medication of any kind without their knowledge is wrong and should not go unpunished. 3 days suspension is nothing. Maybe a couple of months in IN school suspension. What if someone had been allergic to the laxative or something in it? What if they had a condition that the laxative affected. I'm one of the biggest pranksters I know, I'm the Nicole Richie of my clique if you will, but seriously; grow up girls.
RU 11-13-2008 @ 3:22PM
I am from El Paso and the news reporters stated that the "Brownies" had been sent to a lab to determine the ingredients. As for punishment, I feel that these pranks are a little more dangerous these days than 20 years ago. Say one of these young ladies had IBS or even more realistic for the population of this town is a diabetic. Even the small amount of laxative used could cause some serious medical issues if ingested.
I feel that it is time to make young people respondible for their actions. They thought the prank out but did not think of what could possibly happen to the girls if any had health problems.
It will be interesting to see what happens when the lab results comes back. I pray for all that there was nothing more than the laxative, but if there was the girls should be punished more severly than a few days of suspension.
I hope all reading this understands how rat poisoning kills. It is not a pretty sight. I hope that each of you reading this can close your eyes and imagine how the parents of the girls receiving the tanted brownies must feel.

They have watched premeditated murder/killings on TV practically since the day they were born. It's no wonder so many "think up" such horrible acts. You can't tell me that TV does not have a heavy influence on todays youth

Wow Ravensong. What a mean thing to say. And IGNORANT to boot. There's lots more shows on TV than CSI that can give you ideas for pranks or something more serious.
Did you wake up on the wrong side of the web today or what? I'll bet you're the real fatass who sits around in her trailor stuffing her face with cheesesnacks all day long. Then you get all pissed off because you're fat so you come online to take it out on some unsuspecting poster. We have a name for people like you in the internet community. You are a TROLL.
Betty's post made sense to me and I would be inclined to agree that kids today do get too many bad ideas from TV programs.
betty 11-13-2008 @ 6:11PM
DAMN Ravensong... you didnt' read it well did ya? lol I never said anything about high school girls or sitting around watching tv allday... just that over the kids lives they've seen so many rapes, murders, violence... no wonder it is so easy for kids to go that violent. it's not a good influence... and i am no dope... but you sounded a bit like a dope-head? lol been smoking to much?

I think it's alot to do with parenting these days in time...it's how they are raised.
i think that they should be tried ...put in juvi for a couple of years. make them do community work as well. no slap on the wrist.
i think t.v. and parenting. has alot to do with this.
parents-are to blame for not spending time with thier kids, or talking to them in teen yrs.
It's the choices given to them and what they do with them,.
Don't we have enough to worry about in the world instead of something so so mineute? people are going to be who they are no matter how you slice the cake.later on in life it''s going to come back on them, wither they like it or not.

Hurting other people to get ahead is something that used to be taboo but no a days it is nothing for kids to be just as dangerous to others because the world has made murder and death apart of daily life. Video games are more graphic and murderous and make our kids not fearful of taking life, they live in the technology age where anything is fair game. The thing is that parents no matter the age of the kids buy these games for their kids, telling themselves that it is only a game and that they know right for wrong, but do they really?Like the old saying goes it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt.
It is unfortunately time for these kids and their parents to be held responsible for their actions and depending on their ages they should be tried as adults and their parents should face charges also, for not keeping a better eye on them and teaching them proper ways to deal with competition, such as sportsmanship and respect for others.
