Exploding toilet sends boy to the hospital
Filed under: In The News, Weird But True
You now how sometimes your bathroom needs a little freshening up after a particularly, um, odorous event? You might be tempted to light a candle or spray some air freshener and that is fine. Just don't do both. This poor child in Germany found out the hard way that aerosol sprays and open flames can be an explosive mix. At 13-years-old, Dennis Bueller is old enough to read the warnings on the can, but admits he didn't bother. After finishing his 'business', he gave the bathroom a liberal dousing of Purple Rose air freshener then decided to hang around for a bit.
"Then I began fiddling with a lighter my dad left in there and suddenly there was this big orange whoosh! of flame. I woke up outside with my clothes burned off me and smelling like a barbecue," he said.
He will now need months of medical care for the burns on his burns face, arms, legs and upper body. The boy's dad sympathizes with his son's pain, but hopes he has learned a lesson. "He said the downstairs loo smelled but I think he realizes he was a bit dim in playing with a lighter," said Artur Bueller. Maybe it is just me, but if I had been the adult who left that lighter laying around in the bathroom, I might be blaming myself for what happened.

His parent will feel guilty no matter whose fault this series of unfortunate events is attributed to. My parents had all kinds of hazardous stuff at our home when I was a child. They had no childlocks, no child-safe home. They taught us "cause and effect" and let us know about consequences.

Audrey, CA said...I use a lot of Air Fresheners in my bathroom, so after reading what
happened to that poor boy, I am going to remove the candle that I have atop the toilet tank. I think of myself as a fairly intelligent person, but I never would have thought that a toilet would explode just from some air freshener and a cigarette lighter! Everyone else seems to think it was a stupid act, but I think the kid didn't have a clue and that does not mean he is stupid, simply uninformed.

Yeah, sure, the healthcare will be "free". But do you know how long he will likely be waiting to get his medical care? Did you ever realize that the people there pay the equivalent of $9-$10 (which I'm sure is at least 1/4 taxes) for a gallon of gas?! People hardly ever use cars! They ride their bikes to the market everyday! Get smart and realize that NOTHING is "free". Taxes are very heavy (much worse than ours) in socialized countries.

Mark...thank you! This is the funniest statement I have heard in a very long time. Had to read it twice, and try to memorize it so I could repeat it (hope you don't mind). I know if we didn't have all the safety warning, you would still be around...love your quick wit!! I lovee George Carlin (man...hate to say that in the past tense)...your statement did him proud!
