Eleven-Year-Old Girl Saves Seven
Maddie McRae is being hailed a hero whose bravery saved the lives of seven people. After heavy rains washed out a section of roadway, two vehicles, including the one she was riding in with her mother and two siblings, ended up in the river. "I knew what was happening," said the eleven-year-old. "I thought we were going to die because the water was going over our heads. But me and my mom prayed a lot and we knew God could get us through it."But instead, Maddie managed to get out of the vehicle through the broken windshield, crawl across a tree branch to the shore, and then climb an electric fence to reach a nearby farmhouse. She called 9-1-1 and rescuers were able to pull her family to safety using ladders and ropes. Her mother and siblings were treated at a hospital and released.
Meanwhile, another family of four was also in the river, having fallen in before the McRae's on their way home from church. "We were coming home from church and came around the corner like we have thousands of times in the 13 years we've lived out here and the road was collapsed in front of us," said Jodi Porter. "And we went down into the culvert and it collapsed and we were in the creek floating backwards for about a mile." Instead of calling 9-1-1, however she called a friend to warn them about the collapsed road. Luckily Maddie McRae's rescuers were able to pull the four to safety as well.
I'm glad young Maddie was able to keep her wits about her and go for help. I'm sure the seven people whose lives she save are glad too.

Because God increased their bravery so they could do what they knew to do, they saved all seven people. God had an important part in this in answer to prayer, but the girls also had to cooperate with God by thinking their way through to an intelligent plan and then courageously work their plan in order to achieve the desired goal. We should, therefore, praise God and also praise the girls for all three are praiseworthy.

honunetcti said...Oh for Christ's sake, she's not a hero... The girl climbed out of a car in a river to save herself from drowning, then climbed a fence which was obviously not electrified, then made a phone call. You people in the media (and the comment gallery) need to stop throwing around the damn H word like that. i didn't hear any mention of the brat pulling anyone else out with her, did you? She was just lucky that someone ELSE who was actually closer to being a hero than she, responded in time to save them.

Alexa said...right on! I don't understand why this is so herioc? Any 11, 10, or even 9 year old kid could figure that out. So, good job for being, um, human? Normal? Having common sense?

The Optimist said..."The River"? What River? Notice this doesn't say where or when or anything specific about any of this. So it probably never happened outside the author's imagination. AOL shouldn't even link to this crap, much less promote it on the Welcome screen.

Patti said...Gail & honunetci, you both need psychological help. If anyone is a mindless twit, I suspect you both are. If ever you are in a perilous situation similar to the one this article described, I doubt that either of you would be blaming God for it, nor would you handle it any better than the 11 year old girl did. Odds are 100 to 1 that you would be praying to God for help! If not, you're even more of a mindless twit than you both project yourselves to be!

The Optimist said...Gail's probably right. You can't "climb" an electric fence. Other than at a couple of prisons, electric fences are strands of barbed wire. This whole article is even more full of dubious nonsense than most religious treatises are.

Sally said...None of this has anything to do with God. All of you need to calm down about this being "God's will" and his test of faithfullness. A little girl happened to swim out and probably didn't want her whole family to die, so she called 9/11. Please stop trying to explain everything as acts of god. Because honestly, its not. No one is a mindless twit for not reading or believing the bible. Perhaps they simply decided to read a science book instead?

JR said...Um, wasn't it Gail who called all of the religious folks mindless twits? I love how Atheists can talk out of both sides of their mouth - they claim to be accepting and open minded, but at the same time are ridiculously condescending and scornful toward religious people.
Also, do you honestly think that YOU would have done that at eleven? It probably took a lot more bravery than you'd like to admit. I'm sorry if that intrudes upon your bubble of self-worship, though.

Sally said...I agree very much that the girl was extremely brave. I have no idea if I could have done something like that at that age. Most people will never have the chance to see what kind of courage they have in a terrible situation. My point is that it came from the little girl, not god. She kept her head on straight, she thought clearly. It came from herself.
Anyways, being Atheist means I have found a different explanation for life, that doesn't include gods and devils. I actually grew up in a very religious household and formed my own opinions as an adult on "the world". I can be combative about religion, that doesn't make me "scornful". I can state my opinion, just as everyone here can spout their bible worship. I worship human intelligence, human love and empathy, if that means I'm in a bubble of self-worship...then think what you wish.

Amy said...Has everyone else overlooked the part where it states that she "then climb an electric fence to reach a nearby farmhouse." If the young girl recently climbed out of a car that was up to her throat in water,...and managed her way to the shores ...to then "climb an electric fence??" ...well if that were the case then she would have been electricuted? ...Maybe G-d did have a play in the matter then?
