Obama Baby Boom?
Diaper changes may not have been exactly what the Obama For Change campaign was about, but there are those who predict that is exactly what many Obama supporters will be doing in about nine months.Did euphoric couples around the country celebrate Obama's win on November 4th with a little unprotected celebration sex? Dr. Manny Alvarez, chief of reproductive science at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey suspects they did. "The mood of the country and the optimism about leadership is always somewhat related to birth rates," he says. "I'm gearing up for a healthy increase."
University of Washington sociologist Pepper Schwartz says that hope and euphoria can work as aphrodisiacs. Add to that the fact that the majority of voters under 30 supported Obama and you have a lot of extremely happy couples of child-bearing age looking for a way to commemorate the big night. Makes sense to me.
If the idea of a post-election baby-boom sounds far-fetched, consider Barack Obama's own birth date. He was born on August 4, 1961. That was almost nine months to the day that John F. Kennedy was elected to the White House. Coincidence?

Lou said...AOL's headline read, "Why June '09 May See a Baby Boom."
Most of us think OK - 9 months of pregnancy, so even a quick count on his fingers by the person who wrote the headline would have given him August. If he were sharp enough to consider the entire month of November, he would have come up with July. The normal human gestation period is 37 weeks. It does not take a rocket scientist or mathematician to figure out that 37 weeks from November 4, 2008 falls on July 21, 2009. Now, allowing that it can be 40 weeks from the first day of a woman's last period, you might be looking at anywhere from July 14 to August 11. You may have noticed I used the politically incorrect "his" when referring to the author. I did so because I cannot imagine a woman making this mistake.
Although it did not say, if the medical community is gearing up for a boom in June, they are either planning for a lot of premature infants, or they also cannot count.

Don said...Another foolish and misleading AOL headline that not ONE prior commentator seems to have noticed. June is only 7 months after Nov. Therefore the projected baby boom would occur in August. Basic simple math. Stupid AOL. Stupid readers!
