Obamas Choose Sidwell Friends for Malia and Sasha
Filed under: Celeb Kids, Celeb Parents
President-elect Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama chose a school for daughters Malia and Sasha this week -- Sidwell Friends School. Michelle Obama said she'd been considering D.C. public schools, as well as Georgetown Day School, but that the family felt Sidwell Friends was the best fit.The school has a long history of educating First Children. Chelsea Clinton, President Nixon's daughter Tricia, and Vice President Al Gore's son, all went there. Vice President-elect Joe Biden's grandchildren also attend, which is said to have played a part in the Obama's decision. Malia and Sasha have grown close with the Biden's grandchildren.
No doubt the Obamas will be criticized by some for not choosing a public school. But Barack and Michelle Obama have made no secret of the fact that they will do whatever it takes to make life as normal as possible for their girls. Privacy and security are going to be two issues they'll constantly be juggling, and Sidwell Friends obviously has a lot of experience educating Presidential children.
What do you think of the Obamas choice?

You win.
I quit.
I am now deleting Parent Dish and I will never come back to make you more miserable than you already are.
I will now spend my months of free time eating bon bons and watching tv.
It is so nice to have a cushy job with lots of vacation time and nothing to challenge me in any way....it sounds to me that you are jealous.

Almost all the private schools are a religious alternative to public school rather than an academic alternative.
It is not PC to say so, but in an urban area the reason to attend private school is to avoid undesirable classmates, not to get better teachers or schools. Unfortunately if your family values education for your children, they can be undermined by the anti-education attitudes of their peers. This has been shown to be a particularly bad problem in the African-American community.
I support Obamas decision because it demonstrates to the urban community how important and indeed cool education is. Young people who see him as a role model will see how important education was to his success. This will go a long way to reversing the stigma placed on successful students in many schools.
Remember, nobody would question why an athlete would want to be on the best team. As a parent who values education, you are required to use every resource you have to get the best education for your children.

Dawn said...According to the Washington Post, sources close to the Obama's said that Malia wanted to go to Sidwell's because of her friendship with Joe Biden's granddaughter. He has a granddaughter at Sidwell's that is the same age as Malia. Malia and Sasha had slumber parties with Biden's granddaughters at the DNC convention. I am sure that many other kids of parents that the Obama's know also have kids at Sidwell's. It will be an easier transition for those girls if they know they have familar faces at their new school.
