Mom Brands Daughter a Wimp

These days, given that I'm married and have three kids, I try to keep my violent nature suppressed. Most of the time, I succeed pretty well, but every once in a while I come across a story that makes me want to dig out the electric carving knife and start slicing off body parts. This, sadly, is one such story.Tammy Smith, a forty-three-year-old mother from West Virginia, got angry at her six-year-old daughter when the girl tripped and fell. Instead of comforting the girl and checking for injuries, Smith decided to use her cigarette to burn the word "Wimp" into her daughter's neck. According to Detective Shawn Allman, "The 'i' was even dotted."
Why she would get upset at her daughter for falling down I can't even imagine. Perhaps the girl, having skinned her knee or banged her arm, began to cry. Maybe she was just scared. Whatever the case, and even if her reaction was more than the injury warranted, there is simply no excuse for hurting the girl further, let alone scarring her for life.
Luckily, a teacher saw the scar and got in touch with social services. The police were called in and the girl was taken into protective custody; she will be placed in foster care. Her mother, meanwhile, has been arrested and faces ten felony charges, including felony child abuse and malicious assault. If convicted, she could be sentenced to a maximum of only seventy-five years in prison.
If you ask me, she would be getting off very lightly with such a sentence. If I were tasked with meting out her punishment, seventy-five years in prison would seem like winning the lottery.

Crystal said...I cannot even begin to express how angry this article makes me. There isn't a punishment great enough in our legal system for a person as sick and cruel as this!
Not only is she or was she ever fit to be a mother (people don't change overnight) you can be sure this wasn't the first incident of abuse for this little girl... this is only the one where she got caught; this person is a coward! How dare she get her jollies from picking on a poor innocent child, there is enough human filth in this world for her to brand but did she try this on an adult? No! Only on a very small person that didn't ask to be put on this earth and has since had to endure God knows what.
To say that I am enraged, livid and up mostly sick to my stomach right now would be an understatement.
I am only to happy to say that I hope she burns in HELL... literally!
You can be sure that I'm going to give extra love to my own precious children and hope that this little girl will be placed in a wholesome, loving environment that she deserves.

alexis said...i aggree jen but do that then stick her in a cell full of hard core murderers. my dad was a cop and most of the cons he new would have defended a child that had that happen to them. i would give it mabe 2 days before she would be begging to get back out.

irene said...my mother and occasionally my father (when he was home) used to beat me bloody, and DYFUS said i was belligerent, so they threatened me with detention the next time i ran away... the funny thing is...after i was beaten i was thrown outside and the doors were locked, they would then call the police.
they labled me emotionally disturbed.
alot has changed, because they did nothing to my parents...nothing

I wish the next person who wants to throw a kid away would throw them my way. As a breaved parent I can't understand how anyone could harm/abuse or murder a child. I know the personal pain of having to bury a baby, how can they do that to themselves on purpose? I feel guilty just for yelling to bit too much let alone a spank.

Makes you wonder what kind of a cigarette she was smoking when she did that! She ought to be wearing the scarlet letters "C.A." (for Child Abuser) on the front of every shirt she wears throughout her pathetic life.

If someone ELSE, some stranger, some criminal had done this to this little girl the guy would be UNDER the jail but since she's the parent and she OWNS the kid she's going to get a pass with some wimp-ass charge like child abuse resulting in injury or something.
Oh, and I've been a foster parent for years and years and we have adopted several of our babies and there are lots and lots of good foster parents out there. Don't believe the media which would have you believe we're all monsters.

What kind of retard would give the child back? Even with counseling, the flipping scar that the little girl has to see every day is a sad reminder of what her mom did to her. The "mother" type thing needs to die, but that's just my opinion.

I am now 62, but still carry the night when I was about 8, my father placed my hands on an electric burner of the stove. He was told I was playing with fire, and this was his punishment for me. For years, I had circular scars on my hands, but seems no one ever noticed. The scars faded from my hands, but entered my memories. They were locked away, until I hit my 40's, then it resurficed, and has haunted me ever since. The beating abuse I took from him, until I was 18, and entered the Army, just to get away from him. With Vietnam under my belt, that has fed the fuel to the abuse. I now suffer from PTSD and see no end to it. My father is now dead, and may his soul rot in hell. May this woman join him, and may they burn one another. There is one thing I would like to say to any child that may read this. If you are the subject of abuse from anyone, REPORT IT TO THE POLICE. You don't deserve any type of abuse.

Denise said...I really hope you let go of your hurt. It is holding you back from truely being happy. You are letting your fathers' actions still rule you. You need to let it go for your own sake. Your father was wrong in his actions. But would it not be better to wish him some type of peace he obviously needed it in life as well as after life. Do you know why your father was an abuser. Usually they have been abused themself. That does not make it right. Good for you for breaking the abuse cycle. I did not have the best dad either. But I have to remind myself to let it go and be a better parent.

mariah said...This was far past abuse. Abuse would be slapping the poor child's face. This was torture. The pain of having a dozen lines burned into her sensitive neck with a lit cigarette had to be excruciating, and the weeks after as it healed must have been horrible as well. I am crying here. I wonder what the REST of her childhood up to now has been like. How cruel would someone have to be to do that to their own baby? Think about it... this was beyond a sick impulse. This took time and concentrated effort. How that little girl must have cried and begged her to stop.... I can't get it out of my mind.
They need to immediately revoke all parental rights and let this little girl find a loving adoptive family, then they need to put the psycho that did this to her away so that she can never hurt anyone else. This was inhuman. That teacher likely saved this child's life, because anyone who would do THAT would as easily kill her.
