Mr. Lewin and his family, including his daughter and her two children, were out for a walk following a community tree-lighting ceremony. James was pushing the stroller holding 12-day-old Sara in a crosswalk when a pickup truck suddenly turned the corner and headed for them. Just before the truck struck, James shoved the stroller out of the way so hard that the handle broke and the axle bent. His heroic effort worked -- Sara is unhurt.

Mr. Lewin, unfortunately, is in critical conditions with severe injuries. But according to his wife, emergency services were fast on the scene and doctors are pleased with his progress so far. Grandparents are often a child's first heroes, but I have a feeling that Mr. Lewin will always have a special place in Sara's heart. Here's to a speedy recovery so that this brave grandpa can get back to enjoying the little loves of his life.

He was not expected to survive and has made remarkable progress all things considered. Heros never retire. May he make a full recovery and be rewarded for all he saved in his career.

Diana said...There was a similar incident in my neighborhood....a mom was pushing her young kids in a stoller and a truck pulling a trailor loaded with bricks came unhooked and the mom shoved the stroller off to the side. Sadly, she did not make it. Her kids though only have a chance at life because of her last act of heroism. I hope this story has a happier ending and the little girl has a chance to always look up to and hug her grandpa for what he did for her.
