Fights Prompt Changes at Chuck E. Cheese Restaurants

Categories: In The News, Weird But True

chuck e. cheese merry go roundPistol-packing security guards are just one measure some Chuck E. Cheese restaurants are taking in an attempt to prevent adults from "acting like juveniles" at the famous pizza parlor and video arcade.

In one Wisconsin town, police say they are called to Chuck E. Cheese more often than area bars, and the problem isn't youth violence, as one would expect at a venue designed specifically for kids. Instead, the grown-ups are getting into it, often thanks to alcohol and what some experts call the "mama bear" factor.

The atmosphere at Chuck E. Cheese, says on Temple University professor, can echo that of the wild kingdom. And when a parent perceives a threat to his or her child, the instinct is to protect the young cub at any cost. In Toledo, Ohio, for example, a fight involving 10 adults broke out after parents complained to a manager that kids were loitering at one of the gaming machines.

The accused kids started calling the complainer names, and that touched off a melee during which participants allegedly punched and screamed at one another. In Pennsylvania, police are still looking for suspects involved in an incident where a man throttled a woman after she screamed at another mother because her son was "hogging" a game.

Some towns are asking their local Chuck E. Cheese venues to stop selling alcohol, and these same locations are adding armed security guards to discourage fights.

Yowza! I didn't even know Chuck E. Cheese sold alcohol -- although I can certainly imagine that after a few hours in that sensory-overload atmosphere, you might start to crave a little tipple. On the other hand, if it's causing so much trouble, shouldn't the entire chain go dry?

The moral of the story? Chill out, folks. I know that mouse can be annoying, but try to remember you're there with your kids. Just what kind of example does it set when you react to these situations with violence?
