Miley Gets a Porsche - Moms Roll Their Eyes

Miley Cyrus turned 16 a few weeks back, and like all sixteen-year-olds, she was kind of hoping for a car. This week she got her learner's permit, and guess what! Her mom totally gave her a Porsche!
OMG!!!
It's not like Tish took Miley to the dealership and BOUGHT her a Porsche; like millions of American moms before her, Tish, who recently got a new car herself, gave Miley her old car. But instead of a minvan with 100,000 miles on it and permanent juice stains on the seats, Tish's old car is a Porsche Cayenne.
As you can imagine, Miley is thrilled. She had told People magazine that her dream Sweet Sixteen gift would of course be "a car, but we'll see ... I don't want to name a certain kind. I want my parents to know that I'm happy with anything that they get me. I know I'd be really lucky to even get a car."
Friends say that Miley is allowed to drive the Porsche to work when Mom is with her -- she only has a learner's permit, after all. And needless to say, she loves her new ride, even if it's really an old ride.
While it's commendable that Billy Ray and Tish didn't splash out on a new car for Miley, there's still something about a kid's first car being a Porsche that makes me roll my eyes just a bit. Because a hand me down Porsche is still a Porsche, after all. Then again, Miley Cyrus isn't exactly your normal teenager.
I wonder if my kids will love their juice-stained minivan as much?

It was pink and white, the back was jacked up, and all the knobs were missing from the dashboard. I got 1/2 a mile down I-5 (California) when the radiator blew. Now I took this car off anothor sailor's hands and I was going to fix it up and everything but my parents said they didn't want the wreck sitting in the driveway leaking oil. I had that car,a 1970 2 door maverick, a 1973 4 door maverick, 1968 oldsmobile cutlass supreme with a one shot racing transmission stock, and a 1978 AMC ambassador. My favorite was the Cutlass.0-60 in 7 seconds at standing still. Great car!!!

KPaula said...No big deal. Like someone here said, we can expect her to get a nice car (used or not) since she's very rich. I was once into sports cars myself (though, I had to buy myself one when I was finally working and able to afford it). But, at this point in life I couldn't care less what kind of car I drive...in fact, I've gotten to the point where I HATE driving and I would love to live in a place where there are no cars or traffic. Too many reckless drivers out there these days...period!

Something about how kids just assume they're supposed to get a car when they're old enough to drive really peeves me. It also bugs me that all 16 year-olds on TV get cars for their birthday, perpetuating the assumption. If you get a car, good for you. If not, then I guess, like me, you'll learn to appreciate friends who've got their own wheels and are willing to tote you around a little bit more. Miley gets a used porsche. Another publicity stunt meant to make her seem like a good kid. Clever, but obnoxious.

Really, I didn't care. I just wanted a car. I'm all for the eco friendliness too, but I would be embarassed to be riding the bus at sixteen. Think about it. I'm not saying I'm gonna give my child, Anna, a brand new car for her S16 (that is very far off, counting that she is four) though. I would most likely give a sixteen year old a used little car rather than a little red wagon.
