9-Year-Old Accused of Dealing Cough Drop Drugs
Filed under: In The News
Ask a nine-year-old what drugs are and you are likely to hear things like cigarettes, marijuana, even alcohol. But I think you would be hard-pressed to find a kid - or an adult - who would categorize Vitamin C as a drug. Unless you were Khalin Rivenbark's fourth-grade teacher. The Clay County, Florida teacher has accused the Khalin of not only possessing the Vitamin C drug, but selling it as well.Khalin had been fighting a cold, so her father put a bag of Halls Defense Vitamin C cough drops in her backpack. When two of Khalin's classmates asked for one of those cough drops at school, she says she handed them over. But her friend insisted on paying her for the drops. "She felt guilty taking the cough drop or whatever, so she gave me a dollar. I didn't want to accept it, but she had me take it," Khalin said.
Crazy Kids Arrests
Teen Arrested for Farting at School
Flatulent teens, take note: If you pass gas in class, you may be apprehended by police. At least that's what happened to one Florida teen who eeked out a couple of nasty toots before being hauled away by law enforcement.
Arrested for Serving Salt
This sounds ridiculous -- at first. But when this 16-year-old seasoned mom's dinner with salt, it might as well have been poison. Her mother has a number of food allergies, and would've died had no one been there to inject her medication.
Racy Prom Dress Gets Teen Arrested
You say potato, I say potato. She said "prom dress," school officials said "thin strips of fabric that barely cover your nipples." This young woman's dress left so little to the imagination that she was picked up by police!
7-Year-Old Nearly Locked Up for Riding Dirt Bike
After alleging that the young man had ridden his dirt bike on the sidewalk, police handcuffed the boy and took him down to the station -- where they took his fingerprints and mugshot. Best of all, apparently the bike wasn't even turned on when cops yanked the kid off of it. Smooth guys, real smooth.
5-Year-Old 'Cuffed Over Kindergarten Tantrum
Three officers found it necessary to bend the unruly child over a desk and handcuff her while she screamed for them to stop -- which did wonders for their image in the community.
Brothers Fight, One Gets Arrested
What sounds like a stupid (but typical) scuffle between two hot-headed, 12-year-old brothers led to one of them getting picked up by police for domestic battery.
Cops Break Teen's Arm in Arrest Over Dropped Cake
This 16-year-old dropped some cake during lunch and did an average job cleaning up the mess. For some cops took the teen's lackluster approach to cleanliness as justification for arresting her -- and breaking her arm in the process.
10-Year-Old Cuts Her Sandwich With a Knife...and Breaks the Law?
The rules for splitting sandwiches are apparently more rigid than you might think. At least that's the case in one Florida school where a "no tolerance" policy led to felony weapons charges against a 7th grader who was just trying to eat her lunch.
Teen Arrested for Creative Writing Assignment
The teacher encouraged this straight-A student to reveal his emotions on paper -- so he did. And then he got kicked out of school and arrested for "disorderly conduct." So the lesson is...never follow your teacher's instructions?
That's when things turned ugly. Khalin says her teacher witnessed the transaction and came down hard. "She saw me with the cough drops out and I guess she saw me give it to one of my friends, and then like, 'Oh, I see this good business going on around you,'" Khalin said. "She said, 'You're selling drugs.' (I said) 'No I'm not.'" Khalin and her classmates are now facing possible punishment over the incident. The Clay County Schools handbook addresses the issue of kids taking of prescription and over-the-counter medications at school: "If a student must take a prescription or over-the-counter medication during school hours, it must be received and stored in the original container, and be labeled with the student's name, current date, prescription dosage, frequency of administration and physician's name."
So, the question here is whether or not Halls Defense Vitamin C cough drops are considered an over-the-counter drug. According to a local news reporter, the ingredients in the cough drops are almost identical to those in a Lifesaver candy and do not include menthol. This would seem to indicate, at least to me, that Khalin did nothing wrong and is being unfairly accused of being a drug dealer.
I appreciate the fact that school teachers must make judgment calls on a regular basis. But in this case, it sounds like the teacher rushed in making her judgment.

One teacher tried to have my daughter for talking about a Shi Tzu in class, she thought my daughter was saying, "shit"...I called the principal on that one. Needless to say, my daughter got out of the suspension.
This is flu season, my gosh!

I worked for a teacher (corrected papers, organized files, ect.) and when I went back to class, she gave me a bottled water and a pack of crystal light. It was the kind you can put in one bottle of water, shake up, and drink. In my next class, a different teacher took it from me and smelled it, then accused me of putting drugs in my water. I was embarrassed, and she was fired later in the year. This just drives me nuts.

Cindy said...First, shame on AOL for the headline in order to get us to read the article. Second, shame on that goofy teacher that gags at a gnat and swallows a camel. Kids have so many ridiculous rules they have to follow just in order to get to attend school. We are 'lawing' ourselves into a mess in this country! This teacher is also probably the one that sits on the bench outside and makes fun of the poor kids because of how they dress and smell. I wonder what her overall state scores for her classroom are? Are her children passing? geez. This is just stupid.

Melody said...Yes, we have a big Hall's Defense Vitamin C cough drops problem here in the U.S...Our government spends billions of dollars a year trying to stop the import of this dangerous and addictive drug from other countries, but it looks like they have failed. Does anyone know what planet this teacher came from? That's just stupid.

A teacher that knowingly overreacts like this is a psychopath that is ever-vigilant for a reason to go off on someone. These psychos can only operate in a system that attracts and encourages such behavior. I hope all of you readers do what I did: Email the school district and let them know how ridiculous their behavior has been. dmahla@mail.clay.k12.fl.us

How unfortunate that your 6 year old has to forego eating peanut butter sandwhiches at school because a classmate could become severly ill or die due to peanut allergies. What happened to the sense of community and care and concern for the well-being of all of our students? What if YOUR child were the one with the severe food allergies?!!!!! Everyone knows 6 year olds don't have expanded food preferences. Consider this: there are great soynutbutter alternatives to peanut butter that taste great! Why not let your child try this without letting on that it's not peanut butter. I bet with a little jelly, honey, or sliced bananas your child won't even notice the difference. As a parent of a child with severe food allergies, I am deeply saddened when I hear parents talk as you have. Believe me, I and parents who are in the same boat are faced with the dilema of keeping our children safe from exposure to potentially life threatening allergens. Please remember - we truly need to work together in our schools for the well-being of EVERY child.

I wish my family got me more involved. I feel so neglected. I think I'll call my parents, tell them how much I love them!!

Anyway, I had him put chap stick on before school and told him to bring it with him in his pocket. He told me they are not allowed to carry it. I think that is ridiculous. I don't want him getting cracked, bleeding lips. The other night he couldn't eat because of his chapped lips. They need to draw a line somewhere because this is getting ridiculous.

This is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard, and for the authorities to actually pay attention to this is even more insane. The poor little girl is going to be humiliated over a kooky teacher? If the parent gave her cough drops, which are over the counter, it is none of the teachers business. I understand about controllin medicines, but cough drops are 95% candy. Meanwhile teachers smoke and drink coffee? DUH.

Linda said...WOW, how did I ever manage to survive school without all these rules and regulations. Restrictions have gone way to far! When I was a kid we could even carry a pocket knife to school. Now kids are so desynthesized by violent videos, video games, and some music, etc. they not only carry knives but guns. They use them without any reguard to human life. This poor child - how tramatic for her. What about the long term effect as to how she will reguard the importance of school and an education - I am sure it will never be the same.

You have got to be WTF kidding me like yesterday.
These teachers are too caught up in the ridiculousness of some kind of Jerry Springer tv show. Instead of chasing after education they are chasing after cough drops.

Irene said...All of the above writers are very WRONG! There's too many children of all ages today that take drugs. The child can also be very crafty and hide an unlawful drug such as oxycontin in the cough drop package! It's been done, believe me, and especially in junior high school and high school! Our rule for medicines in school is that the meds must be turned over to the nurse and the teachers are required to allow the child to go to the nurse's station when the medications are due to be taken. IF the school does not employ nurses for each building, then the meds should be given to the teacher with an explanation as to what the drug is for written on a note from the parent! All of these rules are to counteract the fact that too many young children (rare in elementary schools but not at all rare in higher grades) are now experimenting with drugs and some students purposely bring forbidden pills to school to sell! All of you who are writing ugly things about the teacher simply do not know what you're talking about, especially since the child with the "cough" drops was taking money for her 'pill'!!!! Teachers are made responsible for far more than most of you have any knowledge of, but our system sends a letter home with each child at the beginning of the year explaining all the schools rules to the parent and the above information is part of that letter!

Pam said...I are you familiar with a drug deal?? I've seen them done in front of me, know code name, you got it. People used to take drugs and/or drink alcohol in the bathroom when I was in HS. If they did it out in the open it would be obvious to teachers.
Oh and yes a 9yr old had an oxycontin pill in their candy wrapper.
Are you one of those teachers that freak out too? Have you not taken any child psych courses? Being calm with children, or anyone, is much better than creating an absurd scene!
