Head teacher Linda Kingdon explains the decision: "We decided from an early stage we didn't want to use the word 'school'. This is Watercliffe Meadow, a place for learning. One reason was many of the parents of the children here had very negative connotations of school. Instead we want this to a be a place for family learning, where anyone can come."
In addition to dropping the 'school' label, administrators have done away with bells, whistles and locked doors. "We wanted to de-institutionalize the place and bring the school closer to real life," said Kingdon. Wait a minute! Did Kingdon just refer to this place of learning as a school? Oops!
Okay, I can appreciate the motive behind this idea - this place is different and they want the name to reflect that. But at least one organization thinks the whole thing is ridiculous. Marie Clair, spokesperson for the Campaign for Plain English says this is another example of political correctness run amok. "Here we are introducing our children to education and instead of giving them something familiar, something that they understand, we go and send them to a 'place for learning'," she said . "We all know that they are going to be going to a school whatever you call it."

Roland said...Ms. Kingdon certainly can't be the "head teacher"....more probably she is the "place-of-learning primary salaried person". Still, the concept has its possibilities... a Rhodes Scholar will thus become a Rhodes place-of-learning-going-person. Sounding more and more like pidgin English... "You fella go dem place of learning, mebbe so?"

Larry said...Guess some people have political correctness on the brain. Opps that's intellectually limited, verbally challenged dogmatism.
Let's criticize Lincoln for saying four score and seven instead of eighty seven. Let's criticize C.J. Earl Warren for writing "with all deliberate speed," when he meant slowly. One of English's greatest beauties is there are many ways to say the same thing.
Funny how conservatives blast "political correctness" when they use it so much particularly to be dishonest.
The South's pecular institution = Slavery
The War of Northern agression= the Civil War
States rights= slavery, Jim Crow, the power to deny federal rights to blacks
liberal revisionism= following the Constitution as our liberal founders wrote it
oppressed minority = the rich
anti-christian= one who follows Christ's liberal teachings
strict constructionism= reading things into the Constitution the framers rejected : gun rights, Christianity as the official religion, abortion bans, state sovereign immunity, etc
voter fraud= non-white voting legally

No matter what you call it, it's still S-C-H-O-O-L. I guess we don't go to restaurants now, they're places of eating. And we don't go to the bedroom, they're places of sleeping (or whatever else you may do there). Why is it when some adults try to get progressive in education they only end up making things 10 times worse. I was sandbagged in the 4th grade by "new math" and never did recover from that. I still struggle with math and have had an inferiority complex about my math skills ever since. Who ever invented that stupid crap should be shot in my opinion. They make laws about every other dumb thing people do, why can't they make a law about educators trying to do stupid things like this in this world. I actually feel sorry for students in places like this, this sort of bull crap just messes with their heads and they never are right about alot of things in life then. And the parents, why do some of these parents get obsessed about sending their kids to the "perfect" school for a "better" education. I hate to tell them but there is no such place. What a child learns all comes from within and there isn't a teacher or school out there that can change the desire in a child. THAT'S whats most important in a child's education, their desire. If they have the desire, you can put them in the worst school possible and they will achieve anything. Just remember that.

Another poster hit the nail on the head about this English school being elitist (and therefore conservative). Unfortunately, England is still a very class based culture, keeping the monarchy underlines this. This school just wants it known it is for the upper crust without overtly saying so.

Teaching in America is about dumbing down-don't teach them good penmanship, screw appropriate grammar, let them write fragmented sentences and papers with shaky internet resources! They don't even know what "funny" is...they laugh at animal abuse and are pushed to accept certain groups' agendae.Wait, you people engineering this travesty will get yours when you lay there flat on your bedsores and in fecal/urine soaked bed pads with UTI's, because these 'darlings' who grew up under your spell won't give a rats ass about you-they'll be busy texting or 'sexting' their peers on cell phones when you need them. And you know what-you deserve every bit of shit you are dealing out! You are fucking our young people over! Wake up and smell the coffee before you're not allowed to drink it!

Kent said...Bet the phone number will be listed in the Yellow Pages under "Schools."
Think about this: people go to all kinds of schools, trade school, high school, business school or b-school, law school, medical school or med school, graduate school or grad school, engineering or engine school.
Then the is the school of hard knocks and the old school.
And isn't "well schooled" a synonym for the phrase, "well versed"?
This is like my county government, which called the new courthouse the "judicial center." Guess what? Lawyers call it the courthouse or the new courthouse, since the old courthouse was turned into loft condos.

Kent said...People are going to use the term school, whether the administraiton likes it or not. In Chicago, there is a large outdoor scuplture formally titled, "Cloudgate." It looks like a giant chrome kidney bean, so people call it the "Bean." Even the artist now calls it the "Bean."
Besides, will parents ever yell, "Move it! You're running late for your place of learning!" Of course not. Kids run late for school.
And then are there "after place of learning activites"? No. It's after-school activities. Then do little kids go to pre-place of learning? Do Protestant kids, on Sunday, go to Sunday place of learning?

On to the name change, I think it's unnecessary. And when they talk about "where anyone can come" that to me would suggest that parents are encouraged to join their children at this school which only goes on to create more kids who are unable to be away from their parents without having a temper tantrum. A friend of mine who lives in the U.S and is a teacher had a parent give them baby wipes and asked the teacher if she could wipe her son's a$$ when he went to the washroom!! Do we want children who grow up to be adults who can't do anything for themselves including spell their own name? I can't even count how many times I've seen children in strollers who are obviously way past the stroller age, or children who should be off the bottle still sucking on one. Thousands of years of human evolution only to get to this point where we seem to be devolving and have forgotten how to rear children.

richard said...Interesting, I thought that was the definition of SCHOOL.
Probably thought up by the same people of No Child Left Behind infamy.
In life, some people excell and some are 'left behind', that is just the way it is. Fairness has nothing to do with it. If you have the willpower and desire, you CAN learn, unless the teachers are prohibited from teaching and made glorified babysitters.
Instead of trying to improve education overall, they dumb it down so even the brightest can't learn any more than the lazy or dimwitted.
That way no one is 'left behind'.
What an idiotic concept!!
No wonder we are fast losing our position as world leaders in innvation and manufacturing.

So now we have to change our launguage or atleast made to feel like we are in another country because people in the stores talk their launguage. Then the dress code changes so now we have to change the names that have always worked until the others came. We are to giving, we give away things that we can't get back. We are so stupid, we don't realise that it is not ours to give away. It belongs to our children just like the Americans kept it for us.
