Yep, Tarrance Jr. and Tariq are twins born on different days, in different months, and in different years. So Tariq will be able to say "Yes, we're twins, but I turned ten and he'll turn eleven this year." That will certainly get the conversation going at parties.
At least the boys, weighing five pounds seven ounces and five pounds fifteen ounces, are healthy, despite being born in different years. Congratulations to the parents!

My daughter was born on New Year's Eve, and the boy across the street from us was born the next day. We had fun teasing his parents that at least we got a tax deduction.

Robert Blum said..."I know I would be pissed" has obviously been accepted by the low-minded mediocrity, such as you are. However, that your coarse ineloquence was accepted for world wide publication on AOL underscores how disgusting and lexiconically impoverished English speakers have become, unable to find words that are not vulgar to give feeling and power to emotional expression. I am certain you are one of those people who says, "And I was like" etc. leaving the unfortunate listener to fill in whatever you are incapable of expressing.

Ashley said...Wow dude, its just a blog. Its not like its an essay being submited to the nobel prize committee for a nomination in literature. Besides, pissed isnt all that vulgar, its not anywhere near the "F" word or the dreaded "C" word. Its a blog, nothing more nothing less. Maybe if the person was going to some elitist college to give a lecture on twins being born on seperate days this kind of thing would be unacceptable, but not here. We all got what this person was saying. By the way, your rant/speech only made you look like some high school english teacher with a superiority complex. And yes I did the atrocious grammar on purpose.

Uncle Roger said...Your comment made me curious about the etymology of the word "pissed" as used to mean angry so I did a quick search -- apparently, it is from the WWII era US: "Pissed off "angry, fed up" is 1946, U.S. slang." (according to the online etymology dictionary at http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?l=p&p=18 anyway.)
In any case, I would argue that the informal nature of this medium lends itself well to the use of slang in order to add color and nuance to the writing. This is not a site simply re-posting dry AP or Reuters stories, but one in which we, the writers, try to interpret those stories and add our own personal flavor to them.
As for my personal eloquence (or lack thereof), I actually pride myself on my command of the English language. I also model good grammar and share my extensive vocabulary with my kids. At four and six years old, my older two understand the difference between subjects and objects of sentences and would never (at least not when I'm around) use "me" as a subject or "I" as an object. You might also refer to this post from a while back: http://www.parentdish.com/2007/08/27/mine-not-mines/
So, to sum up, I stand by my use of the word "pissed". In the situation described, I would not really have been angry, nor simply perturbed. I would not have been put out or annoyed and I would not have been saddened or disappointed. I would certainly not have been furious nor outraged. What I would have been is something less than angry, but with the connotation of acceptance of that which cannot be changed and, while vexing, is not really all that significant in the grand scheme of things. That is, I would be pissed.
I'm sorry if you find that term too coarse, but I am certainly not going to drain the color from my writing in order avoid offending those who cannot handle the vast depth and breadth of the mishmosh that is the English language.
