Levi Johnston's Mother Tries to Explain Drug Arrest
Filed under: In The News
Johnston claims that she had a hysterectomy eight years ago, and subsequently required seven additional surgeries to deal with complications. "I was in pain, and I'm still in pain," she says. "I have been trying for years to deal with the pain. I'd rather not comment any more but it's not everything that they're saying." The string of surgeries and the accompanying chronic pain forced the 42-year-old to abandon her career as a hairdresser.

Sherry Johnston, Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston's other grandma -- besides Sarah Palin -- pled not guilty for charges of selling OxyContin. "I was in pain, and I'm still in pain," she told People.com.

"We both love each other," Levi Johnston, 18, told the AP in a rare interview about his relationship with 18-year-old Bristol Palin. "We both want to marry each other. And that's what we are going to do."

"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned," the Palins's statement said when they announced her pregnancy. "As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows that she has our unconditional love and support."

Chuck Heath, 70, (pictured with wife Sally), Sarah Palin's father, said gift boxes for his newest grandson are piling up in the governor's mail room from all over the world. There's no way the family will ever be able to answer every letter, he said, although they are trying.

"Trig is beautiful and already adored by us," read a statement by the Palin when Trig was born on April 18. "We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives. We have faith that every baby is created for good purpose and has potential to make this world a better place. We are truly blessed."

Johnston also claims that she was prescribed OxyContin by the physician managing her care. Okay, sure, but it doesn't exactly explain why she texted a police informant back in October, to arrange to sell him the drug. Or why she was caught on tape selling the drug to an informant was wearing a camera and a microphone.
It's not entirely implausible that Johston got hooked on painkillers as the result of an actual medical issue; she wouldn't be the first person to find herself in that position. Remember when Rush Limbaugh came clean about his addiction to OxyContin and hyrocodone? He claimed to have gotten hooked after back surgery, and checked himself into rehab. Of course, he wasn't selling the stuff to his neighbors, he was just taking way too much of it himself.
It's hard not to feel for Sherry Johnston. She has a brand new grandbaby, who she says looks "just like Levi," but instead of enjoying her role as the Nana, she's facing jail time for second-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance. And of course, since little Tripp's other grandma is Sarah Palin, the media are parked right outside her house. That can't be fun for her.
But it's also difficult to really believe her story -- if she were addicted to painkillers, wouldn't she be more interested in BUYING them than in SELLING them?
What do you think -- is Sherry Johnston telling the truth? Do you buy the story of pain management gone wrong? Or there something else going on here?
| entirely plausible - chronic pain is a horrible thing. | |
|---|---|
| possible, but only barely - why was she SELLING the drugs? | |
| a complete crock - she's a dealer, plain and simple. |

The responsible thing to do would have been to have checked into drug rehab and not tried to get young people addicted to drugs. I feel sorry for Bristol and Levi's child. Stupid parents and a grandmother with a drug issue.

Kevin said...yes its possible. If she does not have really good drug plan coverage she could just be trying to make enough to afford to get monthly needed medication. Or she could be forced to go to street as doctors for most part under prescribe pain medication. This is a fact bore out by the AMA themselves. ALL WE HEAR ARE STORIES OF PEOPLE ABUSING DRUGS AS ADDICTS. REAL CHRONIC pain patients have to jump thru hoops some times to get proper treatment. Its a vicious circle. It does not excuse what she did. Its wrong but there may be a reason for what she did. May not be a good enough reason to do what she may have done. Drug addiction is a terrible disease..So is being a chronic pain sufferer..Pray for her. either way she could use our prayers

The other grandmother, Sarah Palin, kept the warrent from being executed until AFTER the election. The family has alot of excuses and not much responsibility.

Jeanne said...It is very common after a woman is given a hysterectomy for her to be in permanent pain the rest of her life. She was given a hysterectomy which caused her pain and then 7 operations to follow which didn't help. See what other women are saying about this surgery at: http://hysterectomyinformation.blogspot.com/
Every woman should see this video so they don't end up the same way:

Nora Coffey said...The story of Sherry Johnston’s self-medication with the pharmaceutical drug OxyContin “to deal with the pain” after her hysterectomy seems to be incidental to her arrest. It was immediately characterized by some as an attempt on her part to garner sympathy. The fact that she was disabled by hysterectomy would hardly be noteworthy, if it were not for the fact that she is the “other” grandmother to Sarah Palin’s grandson Levi.
The consequences of hysterectomy are rarely acknowledged. But the pain experienced by Sherry Johnston is the reality shared by tens of millions of women just like her in all corners of this country who have not been heard—1/3 of all women undergo a hysterectomy by the age of 60, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Their pain is usually dismissed as “all in your head.”
The Hysterectomy Educational Resources and Services (HERS) Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about hysterectomy. Many women who call HERS have turned to drugs and alcohol to relieve the back and hip pain, loss of energy, loss of sexual feeling, and change in personality that are common, well-documented consequences of the surgery. Their symptoms are often dismissed or misdiagnosed, which leaves them with little alternative but to self-medicate.
In an ongoing HERS study begun in 1991, 65.8% of women reported debilitating “bone and joint pain.” Furthermore, 79.6% of respondents report “loss of sexual desire,” while 79.1% report “personality change,” 72.8% “loss of stamina,” 72.1% “loss of short term memory,” 70.0% “loss of ability to socialize,” 61.5% “insomnia,” 53.7% “suicidal thoughts,” and 49.5% “unable to maintain previous employment.” In Sherry Johnston’s case, the aftermath of hysterectomy left her no choice but to forego her career as a hairstylist when the pain became disabling.
It is with great sadness that I read these articles about a woman who, if she had been given information about the common sequelae of hysterectomy, would not be facing criminal charges related to a drug she needs to dull her pain.

Robin said...Although I do not condone the act of selling drugs on the black market, I can understand and fully believe the situation Sherry Johnston is in. I too had a hysterectomy some years ago and had to have more surgery due to scarring and adhesions. The long term complications from my hysterectomy and being thrown into surgical menopause at a very young age have also been numerous. I too was prescribed heavy duty pain narcotics and had to be slowly weaned off. It isnt hard to become addicted to them, especially when you live in total pain and cant function otherwise. The despair and overwhelming hopelessness can drive you to extremes. When you have medical bills piling up, are unable to work, in pain and desperate for relief, and cant afford your meds or the fix that you are addicted to (no health insurance or lack of), you will go to the ends of the earth to find a way to get your fix. Selling drugs comes with that territory. Its how one is able to afford to keep their addiction going and get their drug of choice. Of course its wrong and its reprehensible that these drugs reach minors and destroy lives. Its the reality of addiction. Its also a tragedy that this woman suffered complications from a surgery, namely hysterectomy, that is way over performed and 98 % of the time unneccessary and that she was thrown into this nightmare in the first place. There arent any easy answers here. All I know is that I have suffered enormous consequences from hysterectomy myself and there is no way this is just an easy excuse for her as to why she is addicted to oxycontin. It could have been your sister, mother, daughter, wife...

Jay D said...Look folks,
As someone that was addicted, I find it completely plausible that she sold drugs. Ask any addict. They'll tell you that if you don't have money to buy the drugs, you sell some kind drug to make money to buy drugs they want. You'll sell whatever you can for that drug. I know, it makes no sense to someone sober. But that viscous circle is one that drives many addicts. Not every addict is a thief. And not every addict has ready funds to finance their addiction. That that option is open for those that don't want to commit worse crimes. Sad but true. But That's how it works a lot of the time. I'm not trying to make excuses for her. But I do understand, having been there myself. Addiction is a horrible thing. And doing things that make no sense is just a part of being addicted.

Rush Limbaugh gets busted for using his housekeeper as a drug mule to procure the 100 Oxycotin a month he was taking (while still broadcasting on the air every day; his listener/sheep didn't notice the difference-big surprise). Now Sarah Palin's daughter's baby daddy's mom gets busted for dealing hillbilly heroin. Gotta love that family values crowd.

Gracie Wellendorf said...I, along with thousands of other women undestand where she is coming from with the pain from her surgery. When you are hysterectomized and castrated (removal of ovaries) your life is not good and never will be. Our sex organs (ovaries, uterus and cervix) are there for a reason. They are for sexual pleasure and for our well-being the rest of our life. These organs give you the zest for life!
I had dreams. One was becoming a hair stylist and owning my own salon, I did become a hair stylist and was about to open my own salon up when I was easily talked into this surgery. I had a pea-sized fibroid. That is no reason for a doctor to 'clean house'. You NEVER need a hysterectomy for fibroids. There are alternative surgeries for fibroids, cysts and polyps. You just have to find the right doctor.
After this surgery, you most likely will end up losing your husband, career and all your dreams because you are not able to keep up the pace! Maybe this will make women aware of the damage and danger this surgery will have on your life.

Deb said...Regarding her chronic pain issues: I can attest to the result of chronic pain following hysterectomy. The American Fibromyalgia Association is also very aware of hysterectomy causing chronic, disabling pain, which leaves women unemployable. That's the true story here. The story that is NOT being reported. The sad ending, with her felony charges....well....it's another sad ending caused by surgeons who refuse to publicly admit what happens to women. After all, how would they make their money?

Kathy said...Right, the true story here is about the pain Sherry is in from a hysterectomy. I was given a hysterectomy and have been in constant pain since that day when I never had any before that. I can understand how someone could easily get hooked on pain killers after a doctor does this to them. The news should be reporting the real story here, that hysterectomy causes women life-long disabling pain, when in most cases it's unnecessary surgery.
The after affects have been well documented:

It is apparent that if you are a conservative, or even an assumed conservative and you exhibit human frailties, you MUST be publically crucified. However, if you espouse liberal ideals, NO amount of human frailties are serious enough to deserve judgement. Hence the liberal icon John F. Kennedy a documented drug addict and inveterate philanderer. Hence the liberal lion of the Senate, Ted Kennedy. etc. etc. This woman isn't Sarah Palin, so why mention Mrs. Palin in connection with this article unless to smear by association? Something the liberals always decry.

Isn't it odd that when someone in Conservative circles acts like liberals seem to want all of us to act, out come the long knives and the personal attacks. Even a helpless baby isn't exempt. Underneath their insistance on public virtues like welfare the Liberal agenda absolutely loathes anyone who even tries to uphold notions of personal virtue. Liberalism too often gets perverted into Libertinism and Hedonism and the guilty LOVE to point to personal faults of others while excusing their own. The hypocrisy is palpable.
