Instead, it was Eric's 9-year-old friend Ruben Nuncio. Our brave young hero hoisted Eric over his shoulder, carried him all the way home and then called 911. Eric was rushed to a local Houston, TX, hospital by his parents, where he's listed in stable condition and is expected to fully recover. Police arrested a man and a woman at a nearby home where the SUV was found.
I never understood the hit-and-run. if you're already in trouble with the police, why pile another crime on top of it -- especially when a child's life is at stake? Happily, little Ruben has a clear head and a lion's heart, unlike the shady adults inside the vehicle. Ruben's parents have to be very proud. And Eric's very grateful.

Janet said...Hit and Run is not hard to understand. Most of the time the driver has had a few drinks and wants time for the alcohol to get out of his system before the police find him/her. They are taking a chance that they may (or may not) get caught on a Hit and Run charge vs. the certainty of a DUI charge if they remain at the scene. Often they turn themselves in after it is too late for a breatholizer and say they panicked and regret running. Sure.

Whitey said...So, a few drinks is okay to hit a kid and drive off. OOOOOO,What if it was your kid lying in the street hurt is it still okay to hit him/her and drive off. OH yes, REMEMBER< pull the bike away from your car BUT LEAVE THE KID LAYING THERE.

Kate OConnor said...Are you kidding me!!!!! At the very least it is attempted manslaughter at best attempted murder. Nothing less. How can anyone make an excuse for this kind of behavior is beyond me. We would all do best to follow the example of the children. Their parents must be so very proud and rightfully so.

Larry said...To the guy who expresses contempt toward Judith because her post sounds like she has run to avoid a DUI, please note that she could have found out that a person did this after hitting someone she knew. She'd be likely to remember. And She's saying it's easy to understand, not that it's easy to say it was justified, or that it was easy to forgive.

Janet did not say it was ok. She was saying that it's not hard to understand. Just because you can understand something doesn't mean you agree with it. She was merely saying why a person might flee the scene, she wasn't saying she thought it was ok.

Sparkles said...What a bunch of dummies. Janet never said leaving the scene of an accident was OK. What she did say is that she can understand it....not agree with it, but understand. I don't agree with murder but I can understand that when one person kills another it is called murder.

Judy said...Then the courts should BY LAW be required to sentence the offender to the biggest fine or jail sentence or both possible in that state. I think knowing that in advance, would deter 90% of the offenders.

me said...Kate O Conner you have a really good point! But I want to point out that it would most likely be considered involuntary manslaughter. The drunk driver(Paula Vokolek Ballard from Deerfield Beach Florida) that killed my mother was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. Involuntary manslaughter shows no motive or intent, just negligence and usually by accident. AKA...no common sense!

Shasta said...Hello people! Janet was not saying that hit and run was okay, she's saying it's easy to understand because people are so damn selfish that they would rather risk someone's life than take responsibility for their actions! How could so many people have misunderstood her post? Do you not understand context, sarcasm, syntax, ENGLISH!?

steph said...Janet I am not replying to you specifically.... just read the story and said "what the F%$#@". Drinks involved?? I don't care to comment on that- with the mentality I see today - I don't even think drinks were involved - just selfishness and stupidity. No concept of life - or repurcussions.... A total idiot ran over a kid and didn't stop to help him. Granted the kid was probably at fault - maybe not - but in any event - it was AN ACCIDENT. ANd the driver didn't own up to it. Throw the book at him. Take responsibility for your actions and in the end it may be proven that you weren't at fault.. and if you were - then so be it....

Whitey said...Yes, and the hit & run driver will only get a slap on the hand from a Judge and be told go and sin no more. How about a year in JAIL and THREE YEARS of PROBATION with loss of driving privileges for ten years. BE good news for all DRIVERS what good happen to them. Our laws and Judges are too lenient. Who learns a lesson any more?

Great job Ruben.

Craig said...I was involved in a Hit and Run almost 5 yrs ago. It was in Orange County. I was a pedestrian coming home form a store where it was raining at night. I was crossing the street to get to my apartment and all I remember is seeing a bright light and waking up in the hosp. Everybody there was crying and I couldn't understand why? To my understanding I was involved in a hit and Run and that there was no witnesses EXCEPT for the people who lived at the end of the apartments that faced the street. They did see the SUV that hit me. They stopped for a minute and then took off. By the time the witnesses got outside to get teh license plate they were gone. I was told I was lucky to be alive today. I am now in a power wheelchair for the rest of my life. It has changed my life for ewver.

Sandra said...The fact that a child was hit alone is horiffic. But to pull the bike out and not check if the child was alright is appauling. At least call 911 to save the victim. If you are drinking that is the very least you can do. Not running a stop sign is the best.

Larry said...Re: Attempted Murder, LOL
It depends on the jurisdiction you're in, which DA gets the case, and whether recent events such as a bunch of similar cases has stirred up the public to want a message to be sent to perpetrators. It also can depend on circumstances--- if the victim is very unlikely to get help in time, it can become more likely that a case will made that you showed a willful disregard for human life. It can also become very serious if you've done it before. Lots of DUI's are repeat offenders, so there can be only a very few in a community and still cause lots of grief. Some of them only stop because they've been put in jail. Some DA's come down hard on this kind of repeat offender. We do need to stop them somehow if they won't stop on their own.

Nancy said...Thank you Larry for explaining. And Linda...no. I wouldn't. Not unless they aimed for my child and stepped on the gas pedal intentionally. Then I would call it attempted murder. I understand that this is no laughing matter and hit and run has to be treated with severe punishment...possibly equal to murder. This is more likely a coward and a drunk than a murderer. I'd probably attempt to kill the f*cker myself. This certainly doesn't make me a better person. And yeah, my sense of humor is warped...so?
