Sadly, this bizarre condition resulted from a devastating tragedy. In 1948, when Huang first became pregnant, doctors told her that her baby had died in the womb. But the procedure to remove the fetus was expensive -- approximately $150. That was too much money for Huang, leaving her with only one option: Move on. "It was a huge sum at the time -- more than the whole family earned in several years so I did nothing and ignored it," it was reported in The Sun.
The mystery was only uncovered when Huang recently visited her physician, complaining of stomach pain. Her doctor was shocked to discover not only that her fetus had not decayed, but that she'd managed to persevere through such exceptional medical circumstances.
"I couldn't believe my eyes when I discovered she had a baby in her belly," Dr Liu Anbin at Qingshen hospital said. "I've been a doctor for more than 40 years and it's the first time I have seen something like this." Doctors are now trying to determine if they can or need to remove the fetus.
Let's pause for a moment and consider Huang, who has been "with child" since 1948. Amazing. "It's very rare that Huang can be so healthy," said Xu Xianming, director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology department at the hospital.

>>>>>Diltion and Curettage Or Dilition and Evacuation are similar proceedures, but in this case Evacuation of the diseased fetus is what is called for therfore D and E. The curettage part is the scraping of the uterus perfomed after misscarriage to prevent infection when the body evacuates the fetus itself.

Mary Edmonson said...This is called a "stone baby." Can you pass a stone????? I guarantee you it's larger than a kidney stone, so the comment about an abortion is misinformed.

Devon said...Sorry, not possible. The body would naturally get rid of a dead fetus. The source of this article isn't credible.

NUMBER 2 THE FETUS DIED AND SHE COULD NOT AFFORD THE 150.00 TO HAVE IT REMOVED. NUMBER 3 THIS IS NOT THE FIRST CASE EVER WRITTEN ABOUT. IT CAN AND DOES HAPPEN IN THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES. NEXT TIME BEFORE YOU SHOW OFF YOUR SKILLS AS A RAPID POSTER READ IT UNDERSTAND IT. OKIE DOKIE?

Erika said...It is possible, and it happens. Instead of expelling the fetus, the body calcifies the area around it, essentially turning it to bone.

Financially it was a major hardship for the family. You are not talking about that happening in this country, though in that era abortion was not discussed in a public forum. Yes, you heard of back alley abortions, dirty equipment,non-sterile environments and the like. China to us then was an enemy state and little was known. What surprises me is that the woman never went into labor on her own. It wouldn't be a case is rejection, as the body created and nourished the infant for the first nine months.

Karen said...I agree with you Lee Sparks. The doctors should have helped her out by doing the procedure for free. It's not that the woman didn't want to pay, she couldn't pay. They could have endangered her life by letting her stay pregant with a dead baby. Not to mention that she couldn't have another normal pregnancy in this state so they robbed her of having the chance to have a living child. Very sad story.

Karen said...Devon, this IS possible. They had a similar story on the Discovery channel about a woman in Morocco who had her "stone" baby insider her since she was 29 and had it surgically removed at I think age 73 or 75. They did an autopsy on the fetus and showed it on camera. It had been a live baby but died inside the woman during a difficult labor.

Mike said...It's really only the US and perhaps, to a lesser extent, in a few other Western countries where abortion is a hot topic, and it's really only picked up steam during this century. In 1948 in China it would have been a non-issue. And of course, this story has nothing to do with abortion in any case.

I wish the people who write these stories would get someone to proof read for them!! Everytime I read a story frorm parentdish.com I find rediculious errors that should never have made it into print!

Debi said...Okay so she couldn't afford to deliver the dead fetus or abort it or whatever you want to call it because it was to expensive, then explain even though it was 1948 how was she going to afford a live child? DUH!
