Chinese New Year - Activities for You and Your Child

Chinese New Year, otherwise known as Spring Festival or Lunar New Year kicks off tonight, a New Year's Eve of sorts that the Chinese call Chuxi, or "Year-Pass Eve." This important traditional Chinese holiday, which officially starts tomorrow, will last 15 days.Want to teach your child a little more about Chinese New Year? First things first ... bring out the red. The color red is heavily used in both clothing (new, to celebrate the new year) and decorations to ward off evil spirits and bring luck in the coming year.
Here are some great websites to help you and your child learn more about Chinese New Year:
- Before you start celebrating with your little one, make sure you've got your facts straight at the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco, with interesting information about traditions both old and new.
- There are 12 animals in the Chinese calendar (2009 is the Year of the Ox), a fact that's sure to intrigue your kids. Answer their questions at this page, which has everything you ever wanted to know about the Chinese calendar.
- Over at PBS Kids, popular children's series Sagwa celebrates with a Countdown to Chinese New Year. Though we're no longer counting down, the games are still fun and teach young children about some of the holiday's traditions.
- What's a holiday without holiday crafts? Get Chinese New year project ideas, both easy for little ones and more complicated for older kids, at Kaboose. Kids can also make their own Hong Bow, or little red envelopes that are exchanged during the holiday.
- Explore Chinese culture a little more with one of these fun websites: Find your child's name in Chinese, or play a traditional Chinese children's game.
