"Where possible, Kate and Sam do prefer to travel in separate planes," their spokesperson confirmed.
The couple's arrangement doesn't just stem from extreme caution. Mendes, 47, was originally booked on American Airlines flight 77 on 9/11, the airplane that was crashed into the Pentagon killing all 64 people. A late change of his plans saved his life. One month later, Winslet, 33, who is nominated for a best actress Oscar for The Reader, was on board a flight to Texas with her daughter when a man stood up and announced he was an Islamic terrorist and that they were "all going to die."
Some of us might not even fly again after a history like that. But when you're an A-list movie star and a respected director, you really don't have much of a choice. They travel. A lot.
Parents taking separate planes isn't a new idea, but I'm not sure how common it really is. You tell us.If you travel on a regular basis, do you ever consider separate flights? Have you done it? And if you don't, what steps have you taken to ensure your kids are cared for in the event of an accident?

dominique said...Has anyone in that level of wealth thought of Private Air Travel? Private planes are only sometimes really expensive but the benefits of the whole family flying together and no one else there to worry about. No waiting in 2 hour security lines youre in -up-down and out. I fly people all the time that are afraid of that very thing. Let me know if you need a price quote. dominique at blue star jets dot com.

Goresa said...What does it matter? Obammie made terrorism vanish just by "showing up" on Inaug Day. Terrorists are not going to behead us now that Obambro is in charge...all is well. Fly safe and don't worry! Obambro saves all! NOT!

Kate said...I've never thought about it before, but that actually seems like a very wise precaution when you have kids or other family that depends on you. I may have to start doing this myself.

Kate said...Oh, and to all you people talking about private jets, that's about the most enviornmentally irresponsible modes of travel out there. I applaud rich individuals who don't sucumb to the temptation. Say, doesn't Al Gore routinely use a private jet to get to his talks on Global Warming...

worrier said...Although it is far more likely that we would die in a car crash rather than an airplane crash, I was much more comfortable taking separate flights. We did that until our daughters were out of high school figuring that they could take care of themselves if something happened to us then.
