Kid Movies Adults Love
Filed under: Big Kids, Tweens, Teens, Activities: Babies, Media
Being a parent often involves sitting through -- and pretending to enjoy -- some really bad movies. Space Chimps and High School Musical 3 come immediately to mind. But until the kids are old enough to go to the movies alone, we've got no choice other than to suffer through the mind-numbingly boring and badly acted films that pass for children's entertainment. But every once in a while, we are rewarded for our cinematic sacrifices with a kid movie that is actually good. A movie that allows us to experience some emotion other than regret at having shelled out eight bucks for our own personal seat in hell.
More often than not, the kid movies we adults enjoy have been peppered with subtle adult humor that filmmakers have put there just for our benefit. For that, we are thankful. This trend of inserting grown-up jokes in children's films seems to have begun with 1994's Lion King and was truly perfected in 2001's Shrek.
In fact, both of those films made the list in a recent survey of kid films most loved by adults, with Shrek in the number one spot. Rounding out the top five were Pirates of the Caribbean, Finding Nemo, Toy Story and Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone. I agree with all those picks and will add a few of my own: Madagascar, WALL-E and The Incredibles.
What are your top picks for kid movies that adults love?

The link doesn't seem to have the full list, so I looked it up:
1. Shrek
2. Pirates of the Caribbean
3. Finding Nemo
4. Toy Story
5. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
6. The Lion King
7. Mrs Doubtfire
8. Monsters Inc
9. Ice Age
10. Wallace and Gromit
The poll was taken by a UK company, though I don't know if they survey other countries as well. If not, I'd be curious to see what Americans would have on our list.
For my part, I also loved Kung Fu Panda, and definitely Princess Bride should be on there. And Ratatouille. And the Incredibles. I wouldn't have included Lion King, or a few others.

Greta said...In the UK, the book and movie are called "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", and always have been. They changed the name when they published it in the US to increase its appeal.

Anita said...Shrek is my least favorite kid movie and banned in my house. It's full of adult humor and potty humor (at least the first one, I won't watch the others) and I felt it was inappropriate for kids. But I loved The Incredibles and Shark Tales.

1. The Princess Bride
2. The Iron Giant- nobody talks about this movie, but it's truly incredible, and quite a bit moving. Even my husband teared up at the end, something that he rarely, if never does at movies.
3. Willow
4. The Goonies
5. Spirited Away
6. Howl's Moving Castle
7. Beauty And The Beast
8. The Nightmare Before Christmas
9. Mary Poppins
10. Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Oh yes, and for the Sci-fi geek in me, it is mandatory that she sees the original Star Wars trilogy of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return Of The Jedi as she becomes old enough for each.

TWILIGHT!!
Eragon
Bllood and Chocolate
Lord of the Rings (all three)
Harry Potter series when she was younger 6 and of course as they came out since
However, we both agree books are much better. We are both awaiting the arrival of Wicked (the musical) to our local music hall.
She is obsessed with Phanton of the Opera. And as soon as she finishes Interview with A Vampire, she will watch that.
Shrek for the younger 6yo
Harry Potter (second run) She just read third book
Enjoys musicals (The Lion King, The Little Mermaid)
I have watch every disney movie and enjoy them all, but some more than others-twins will begin watching them soon.
