The New Easy Bake Oven
New, and unfortunately not-so-improved, the oven caused 77 burns, 16 of them second or third-degree, and one that resulted in a partial finger amputation.

Aquadots
When you add water to these little plastic balls, the coating produces effects similar to GHB -- the date rape drug. Pleasant. Thankfully they were recalled.

Lead paint
Speaking of things you shouldn't put in your mouth, how about any toy from China? Hundreds have been recalled thanks to the high levels of lead in the paint used to coat these toys

Magnetic toys
Particularly magnets that are small enough to swallow. When positive and negative magnets are floating around your digestive tract, they're drawn to one another, which can do some serious, life-threatening damage.

Snack time Cabbage Patch
This little doll was so hungry, it had a habit of chewing little kids' fingers, hair, and whatever else was unfortunate enough to get stuck in its mouth. It was quickly recalled.

Mini-hammock
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission: "the mini-hammock can twist around a child's neck as he/she is getting into or out of the mini-hammock, resulting in strangulation and death." All 3 million were recalled.

Lawn Darts
These have been banned for years in the US, as they had a tendency to wind up stuck in kids, not the ground.

Johnny Reb Cannon
This bad boy fired plastic cannon balls up to 35 feet. Even a pellet gun would be less dangerous -- at least you can aim a gun.

Atomic Energy Lab
Good thing this atomic energy set only came with "very low-level" radioactive sources, because that's not dangerous. Oh wait -- yes, yes it is.

Water Yo-Yo Balls
Speaking of getting strangled to death, these yo-yo balls came under scrutiny after the stringy cord got wrapped around children's necks. They've been banned in Illinois, but have yet to be recalled by the CPSC.

The game is Baby Pals and it's a virtual reality kind of thing where players take care of an infant. During the game, the baby doesn't speak real words while she's being fed, taught to walk, etc. But put her in the bathtub and she gets very chatty, repeatedly saying those four little words that angered so many people last year.
The baby in the game isn't just saying something that sounds similar to that Fisher Price doll, it is clearly the exact same recording. Which is weird because those toys aren't even made by the same company. And what is even more weird is that Rachel Jones, the woman who discovered the hidden message in her daughter's DS game, has a four-year-old who had the Islam-talking Fisher Price doll last year. And she's not happy."Not just my daughters' toys, but we have a son too," said Jones. "Now I feel like I need to listen to all of his little toys to make sure they're not saying it."
In most cases, I think people are imagining things when they hear secret messages in toys. But in this case -- and it could just be the power of suggestion at work here -- I totally hear what she hears. What do you make of this?

Rob said...So what if the toy did say that? Does it really matter?
I remember when the doll was recalled and even then I didn't see anything wrong with it. It's not like the toys were saying "Kill your parents in there sleep". The phrase "Islam is the light?" is not in any way a bad thing to hear. No one will hear that and say "WOW I agree I must denounce my religion and convert". I really wish people would use rational reasoning skills more.

heard Paul is dead. Well Paul is still alive and paying big alimony.
He should have married a Muslim girl and stoned her to death.
Ringo would have volunteered to get stoned too. ; )

dana said...i think everyone is missing the point! if a parent wants to buy their children a toy that is religious in any way, whether Islam, Christianity, etc.... that should be their choice and not somehow "accidently" ingrained in non religious toys. i do not personally think the phrase stated would be harmful (and I am a Christian), however, it should be the choice of the parent to give their child any such toys and not have it "subliminally" sent without the parents knowledge. i agree if the doll said "kill your parents" or "i love satan" or so on, the same standards should still apply. it doesn't just have to be about religion, it can be for anything. bottom line is ANY "message" has no place in ANY toys, period, regardless of what the "secret" message is

Katrina said...This is absolutely ridiculous! I was absolutely annoyed to read the comments by all the people who think that:
1. The lady is crazy
2. She has too much time on her hands
3. She is making it all up
4. She is tampering with the toys
5. It's the power of suggestion. If you think you hear it, you can convince someone else they hear it too
6. The doll is making noises that people mistake for "Islam is the light"
For all those people who think 1-6, you don't know what you are talking about! I mean, have you even listened to the doll?! I work at Target, and absolutely ALL of those dolls said that phrase. You can ask anyone in my store, or any other store that KNOWS about the doll, and they will agree.
It's not a matter of fact that it's about "Islam". For example, it could say that any religion is the light, and any number of people would have a problem with it. What also doesn't matter as much, is the fact that it's about religion. It could say something inappropriate such as a curse word/phrase, or that something is good/should be done such as "cigarettes/drugs are good, go do them," any number of people would have a problem with that as well. What really matters is that it's a subliminal message.
Dolls, and other kids toys, should not have subliminal messages hidden in them. Kids are very impressionable, they will repeat what they hear and do as they think is right. If a kid hears someone curse, they will repeat it. Also, if a kid sees an adult do something, they think its what they are supposed to do. For example, a little boy sees his dad hit his mom, so the kid thinks that it is ok and often grows up to be abusive just like he was raised (just one example among many, but you get the point)...
The point is, today it's a message about Islam being the light, tomorrow it could be a message about cigarettes, drugs, stealing, "squashing bananas up ur ass," or any number of things. Who knows whats next...
By the way, there wouldn't be as much controversy about the doll if it had proper labeling. If the doll was labeled mentioning the fact that it said "Islam is the light," then you would know before hand and would have the choice to buy it or not. If it plainly said it on the packaging, then you have no real reason to complain. It was clearly labeled, and you were too stupid/lazy to read the packaging. If you don't like it, dont buy it!

labelthatdoll said...Islam is not a race and you cannot silence the debate by falsely accusing a debater of hatred and racism. What nonsense. Disagreement is not hatred. Daring to tell the truth is not racism. But perhaps expecting women who fancy themselves feminists and supporters of women to actually put their money where their mouths are and stand up for women rather than go into denial mode and stick their heads in the sand is asking too much. 'Very easy to post a comment on a blog; much more difficult to actually do something about it.
Muslims themselves defend their "right" to marry little girls based on the fact that Mohammad married a six year old and consummated the "marriage" when she was nine and he was in his fifties. Of course I'm not talking about Khadija, Mohammad's first wife who was indeed fifteen years older than he was. I'm talking about Aisha, Mohammad's favorite wife, one of the wives he married after Khadija died.
From Volume 5, Book 58, number 234 of the Hadith, according to Bukhari, Aisha tells the story of her wedding to Mohammad herself.
Narrated Aisha:
"The Prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six (years). We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Allright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, 'Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck.' Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age."
A Yemeni eight year old who was married off to a 30 year old man last year who repeatedly beat and raped her. Her family refused to help her because under Shariah law her husband had the right to do what he wished with he. So that little girl went to court by herself and now her father and "husband " are in jail, and yet the practice persists. It is estimated that 52.1% of married females in Yemen were married as child brides.
The Ayatollah Khomeini, the highest authority in Islam after his rise to power during the Iranian Revolution in 1979, reduced that marriageable age for women to nine years old. He did this because the Prophet Mohammad consummated his marriage with Aisha at nine. He himself married a ten-year-old girl when he was twenty-eight. Khomeini called marriage to a prepubescent girl “a divine blessing,” and advised the faithful: “Do your best to ensure that your daughters do not see their first blood in your house.”
Please feel free to refute any of this with researched facts, not just your emotions. Please prove me wrong.

I just want to say one thing. First, I am Christian myself in case you were wondering, but anyway I've got to know....just who do you think Allah is? The fact that I already know you don't know makes me think you are a very ignorant person!
Allah IS GOD!!! He is the SAME GOD that you and I believe in! You act as if Allah is some other kind of "Ungodly" Idol of Worship or something.
I am a practicing Christian, but I do know a bit (by choice) (not claiming to be a professional on the subject) about different religions because I don't want to be seen as an ignorant person such as yourself!
What people need to understand is that there ARE many different religions on this forsaken planet, and just because someone is Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Methodist, Jehova Witness, Prodestant(sp) etc. doesn't mean that each of those sects are horrible for what, who, how, etc. they believe in.
That's just an FYI !!! Think about that....ignorant 3!tc4.

Big said...After reading all the above comments no one has asked the pertinent question..how did this happen?Who's responsible for programing different toys from different companies with the message?I agree about it not being a big social thing considering the childrens ages..but if some person or group of people have access to these toys/games..it means a security breach at both the companies.Remember this one.."sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me?"Maybe next time it will be sticks and stones...or worse...=:(

Maggie said...WHO CARES?? What is the big fking deal if it sounds "kinda" like it or not? I've heard the doll and as far as I am concerned all it has turned into is a freaking Witch hunt all over again but this time it's Muslims. If you actually hear those words in what the doll or game says you've got some MAJOR issues. If only people would take the time to learn about the real Islam not the BS crock of sht that FOX news or the neo-cons try to tell you is the "real" Islam. Even Saudi Arabia doesn't follow the true Islam. Don't be so scared of a religion with IS related to Christianity and Judaism, if it wasn't why are the three classed as the "Three Abrahamic religions"? And no before you neo-con witch hunting freaks try to say I am a Muslim I AM NOT I am actually HINDU. And if anyone knows anything about what happened in India during 1947 between the religions you'd probably be pretty surprised by my support for Muslims. Do you seriously think God cares about the particulars of how we worship him/her/it?? I study religion and all but perhaps two (neither being Islam) teach the identical same message. So instead of being paranoid learn about your own religion and then take time to learn about others you might be better for it in the end. I think it's pretty irresponsible of AOL to run a story like this because it only adds to the anti-Islam sentiments in North America which will rip the two countries apart and could cause some serious harm to many people. No one had a problem before 9/11 whether their professor, neighbour, taxi driver, baker etc was Muslim before a handful of brainwashed lunatics flew three planes into buildings and attempted to fly one into camp David. Maybe the rest of the religions should start judging Christians by the actions of the KKK or the Crusades.

Jason said...gigi, when you know the difference between 'there' and 'their', then you get an opinion about whether I am an idot. I am in fact much smarter than you. As for 'changing our way of life,' that's impossible for someone like me to do. I am part of academia, which is not only ignored in this country, it's often maligned as 'bringing down our morals.' This country is run by fundamentalist Christians who bitch and moan about Islamic messages but are constantly pushing Christian messages. That is something called hypocrisy. There is nothing worse than hypocrisy. That is worse than all the sick, twisted people in the world.
