It is terrifying enough to most of us to imagine bringing home one new baby, never mind eight. But how's this for overwhelming: The California octuplets born this week have six older siblings at home. The oldest is seven, and the youngest is two. That's fourteen kids, in case you're too stunned to count. Including a set of twins. And reportedly, all six were conceived using some form of reproductive technology.
While the mother's identity is still a mystery, the babies' grandmother, Angela Suleman, said that her daughter never expected to have eight more children, although she acknowledges that the young woman underwent fertility treatment to get pregnant with "just one more girl." According to MomLogic, she used donor sperm provided by a friend; the same man is rumoured to be the father of all six of her children, although he has no involvement with the family.
The mother and the six older kids have been living with Suleman in Whittier, California. And just over eighteen months ago, the woman's parents filed for bankruptcy after buying a home for their daughter and her children. The babies' grandfather, Suleman's husband, is planning to return to his native Iraq to work, in order to help support his daughter's brood.
With six older children and no father on the scene, it's hard to imagine what motivated this mom to take the risk of eight babies. "What do you suggest she should have done?" Anita Suleman asked the Los Angeles Times. "She refused to have them killed. That is a very painful thing." Suleman said the new babies are "so tiny and so beautiful." As of today, seven of the eight are breathing on their own.
There's a lot going on here -- the babies face serious health risks, of course, and expensive medical treatments, which makes the family's precarious financial situation an issue. The mother will need a lot of help with fourteen kids, eight of whom are infants, but where's dad in all this? Taken all together, it's hard not to wonder how on earth she ever convinced a fertility specialist to transfer so many eggs in the first place, and what will become of these wee babies when they go home.
What do you think -- are these babies a medical miracle, or a social disaster?

They probably thought this was better than the show...no dad and 6 other kids...like a competition...how sad and idiotic...those kids will all suffer for this one.

ESmeralda said...Maybe she really did not have more than she could handle and probably the doctors implanted only 4 eggs and they divided in utero after they had attached to the lining . I know I only wanted one healthy child but got twins instead because my husband had fertility problems and I sure as heck didn't want to sleep with someone else's husband on the side or with tom, dick, or harry. Than God they both (my twins) were extremely healthy and I have the support of family ( who give hand me down from their twins also 4 sets in the family. Twins run in both sides of our family. I too am an identical twin. My twin sister conceived twins naturally but, decided to abort because she had already 2 children.) We really don't know the medical or biological history of the lady All I know is that the doctors don't have to implant 8 eggs in order for 8 babies to be conceived.

Didn't she just have OCTUPLETS? Wouldn't that make 8 infants?
What a sad, sad woman, that she knows she can just expect a handout from the taxpayers. Another reason why you shouldn't be allowed to have more children unless you can personally support them.

SKL said...1) THIS IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. How dare any of you presume to judge?
2) How come I NEVER see you people on this site complain about thousands of black people having a kid every year, starting when they are teens? Why does PC only apply to some groups?

Laura said...Actually, SKL, it is OUR business. We are paying for this as taxpayers, are we not? That makes it our business.
As far as being PC, I've never been on this site, but let me assure you, I'm the least PC person you'll ever come across in cyberspace. Black, white, young, old, gay, straight, male or female, we need to learn to get over ourselves. I don't care what color this woman is. If she were young and black, I would say the same thing. The point is that she has behaved in a grossly irresponsible manner. If she chose to do so and I didn't have to pay for it, then it would be NONE of my business, but that's not the case, so it IS.

Greta said...Why do you have to bring race into this? It's totally irrelevant. Most of the comments here are simply saying that you should not have more children than you can care for, and I think most people would agree that 14 children, aged 7 and under, will require a LOT of care, and a lot of money, especially since it's very likely that there will be special needs for some of the octuplets. It's possible that they will have a lot of help from family or friends, but as it said in the article, they abandoned a home and have filed for bankruptcy, so it's not like they're rolling in the money.
As far as your outrage about judging the woman? What, we can't have an opinion about the matter? I think it's hilarious that you are upset about all the "judging" going on, and then in your 2nd point you are all set to judge a different group of people, for pretty much exactly the same reason that the other posters have raised, and that is: don't have more kids than you can handle.

Eileen said...You are partly right. Some people in racial groups do get caught up in having babies early in life. Some people wait until they are really old for having kids, around 44, can afford kids and bring Down Syndrome babies into this world even knowing that this can happen.
The biggest problem here is taking responsibilty for what you create. If a couple has 6 children already that they are supporting, 8 more could put a strain on them. However, a SINGLE parent who has 6 children under age 7 who already depends on the State to finance her exploits, then chooses to become pregnant again, needs to divest herself of the organ inside her body that provides a place to grow these babies.
The woman cannot make money by selling them, so why does she want to burden the world with those she cannot personally support?

Steph said...Having a child every year is SO much different than having 8 at one time. There are some black people that do work and that can afford to have a child a year. I don't know of ANY FAMILY...black, white, purple, yellow or green...that can afford 8 premature infants and 6 other children under the age of 8. That's almost like having a set of twins every year for 7 years. And, she made it our business when she decided to allow the story to be told. She made it our business when the state of California is the one who's going to have to foot the bill.

You sound like a total pea-brain. No doubt you dropped out of high school,,,,IF you made it that far! Our ancestors brought the colored people here to abuse & use as slaves, they deserve as much respect as anyone gets, maybe even a little more. And NO I'm not colored, just a very well educated caucasian with a BRAIN.

What about all of the American-born white women who also have more children than they can support? I consider it to be child abuse and neglect when a woman/couple produce more children than they can support without public assistance.
When I was a senior in high school (1986!) in a small rural community in West TN, there were 13 pregnant girls in our school of approx. 300 students. People having children they can't support is not a new problem.
I live in a larger town now. The public school my 3rd grader attends has a free/reduced price program for breakfast & lunch, and a "backpack" program where a small backpack stocked with food (ready to eat soups, fruit, instant oatmeal, etc.) and juice boxes is given to students who qualify every afternoon to make sure they get some kind of dinner & on weekends.
I think that after a person/couple produce a 3rd child they can't afford, the children should be able to go on the "backpack" program and not a penny be given to the parents. If they can't provide shelter, they have no business being parents.

EH said...Funny how you bring race into a non-racial issue. Talk about judging from the most judgmental to commenter on posts here...
It is clear this woman did not have "current" fertility needs as she already has 6 children thru fertility treatments. The doctor and the mother have taken what modern medical advances can offer and abused it.
The grandmother has spoken out as to her disapproval with the whole situation since SHE is the one helping care for these "modern day miracles"...
Thank god for fertility drugs for the 1000's who desperately want children and take the steps, both financial and emotional, to obtain this dream. It seems this woman did not take either step and her children will pay the price emotionally while taxpayers pay the bill.

Mamacita said...Being conceived and born is never a child's fault; however, the mother is clearly an idiot, as are her parents before her and the doctor who helped this social nightmare into existence.
It becomes other peoples' business when other people have to support such people.

Richard Lyon said...I agree it is all our "business" when we all have to pay for it with high medical bills and our taxes used to enable such (words fail me).... folly! The practice of Female Genital Mutilation, which is widespread in the area of the mother's origin, makes normal copulation and vaginal birth extremely painful, that would explain the previous i.v.f. procedures. The lack of educational opportunity in (dare I say it) extremist Muslim countries like Iraq and Iran and Pakistan, Sudan, Yemen, yada, yada ... look for a war-torn repressed state and you will find this form of torture inflicted on women. We ALL pay for it.

Heather said...This is sick irresponsible behavior from a attention starved woman. This is a drain on the ecomony of a country that is already in sad shape as it is. Having 14 or more children does not make you a hero it makes you a people breeder, if puppy mills are a bad idea then this is equally a bad choice. There is no reason that these types of actions should be glorified or that TV shows should be made glorifing them. They should make a TV show about mothers of only children who made a concious and sane decision to stay that way. The more people that we place on an already over populated planet, means that resources will run out sooner and that things will be even harder.

This is very private and no ones business. The only thing to be accomplished is to harass this woman unmercifully. Lets make something news worthy the topic of the day, like abortion or do we not want to talk about killing our babies anymore as a means of birth control? What an obscene society we have become.

Just because she decided to have kids does not give her any right to bring that many kids into the world. I only have one kid and when he was a year old my husband tried comitting suicide and luckily i found him but he spent 5 days on life support. The hospital told me to apply for welfare right away since I was not working because of complications I suffered from having my child and a severe bad back. My husband was the only one who worked and he was laying there on life support. I had nothing at all no money we didnt even have medical. Ok this is what welfare is for right people who are in dire need of help. Well they turned me down ! because my inlaws paid our $200.00 lot rent for us and they concider that income for us so we made to much to get food stamps or anything. I was left with a 1 year old son and nothing, no money to take care of us and the government wouldnt help us but we only had one kid, paid our taxes, Both worked untill i got hurt and I didnt even get disability or anything to help. Anyways my point is that this lady just decides oh i want 14 kids and let all the tax payers pay for it because i cant take care of them all. She should be thrown in jail and so should the doctor who did this and they should have to pay back all the money they got from welfare and the so called donor should have to pay child support instead of us paying it for him.

She only needs 5 more to beat out the duggers for the top spot on prime time tv. Talk about stupid. She's just one of the many.......
