Octuplets' Mom Has Six Other Kids and Absent Husband

It is terrifying enough to most of us to imagine bringing home one new baby, never mind eight. But how's this for overwhelming: The California octuplets born this week have six older siblings at home. The oldest is seven, and the youngest is two. That's fourteen kids, in case you're too stunned to count. Including a set of twins. And reportedly, all six were conceived using some form of reproductive technology.
While the mother's identity is still a mystery, the babies' grandmother, Angela Suleman, said that her daughter never expected to have eight more children, although she acknowledges that the young woman underwent fertility treatment to get pregnant with "just one more girl." According to MomLogic, she used donor sperm provided by a friend; the same man is rumoured to be the father of all six of her children, although he has no involvement with the family.
The mother and the six older kids have been living with Suleman in Whittier, California. And just over eighteen months ago, the woman's parents filed for bankruptcy after buying a home for their daughter and her children. The babies' grandfather, Suleman's husband, is planning to return to his native Iraq to work, in order to help support his daughter's brood.
With six older children and no father on the scene, it's hard to imagine what motivated this mom to take the risk of eight babies. "What do you suggest she should have done?" Anita Suleman asked the Los Angeles Times. "She refused to have them killed. That is a very painful thing." Suleman said the new babies are "so tiny and so beautiful." As of today, seven of the eight are breathing on their own.
There's a lot going on here -- the babies face serious health risks, of course, and expensive medical treatments, which makes the family's precarious financial situation an issue. The mother will need a lot of help with fourteen kids, eight of whom are infants, but where's dad in all this? Taken all together, it's hard not to wonder how on earth she ever convinced a fertility specialist to transfer so many eggs in the first place, and what will become of these wee babies when they go home.
What do you think -- are these babies a medical miracle, or a social disaster?

Sharon said...To negotiate that children should be raised without a father (good or bad) is unfair to them and selfish of the Mother. I knew a teacher who did this, became ill in the pregnancy which affected the baby and he was born with many disabilities and most felt that she was selfish to have done this procedure at all. I'm an adoptive Mother of two, a foster Mother and a step-Mother and each of these children have been loved deeply by a woman who could not bear children. However; my deepest regret is that two of the men (one died) should have been there to value them as much and just abandoned them - children need parents (both) throughout their lives. I just hope that the grandparents can be there because single parenting just is not fair and I cannot support it knowing this was planned.

Grandma said...Please don't pass the blame onto Kaiser Permanente - the "mother" was already 12 weeks pregnant when she presented herself at their facility, and the staff cared for her as they do all their patients. (I wouldn't be around today if it wasn't for the incredible medical staff with Kaiser). Incidentally, I believe the young woman has a college degree in CHILD DEVELOPMENT! Perhaps she wanted a few to practice on!

KC said...SKL.... why in the world would you bring race into the mix... so what if BLACK ppl have babies... that was never the point of this discussion.... guess what I am a black female I have 4 kids, the first of which I had when I was 17 years old, married the father and we had our last 3.... oh and guess what.... "gasp" we don't need any handouts. we both make GREAT income....
so why is race an issue, if you look at the stats it does not seems that the most race who recieves public assistance is NOT black... do some research and see who is draining the public assistance departments and the "gasp" when you realize that you should put your foot in your mouth.....

LADYOTM said...skl, why do black people have to have all the kids everyday. I work in social services (providing public assistance benefits). Over the last 8 years, I've seen the number of teen parents having more babies decrease. At issue is the fact that this woman already had several kids, and had 8 more. It was irresponsible, especially in her financial state. But they all will be Medicaid and Food Stamp eligible unless she has some resources well above the resource limit. We all have made some irresponsible decisions, but I agree, in her case it was selfish. I feel so sorry for those kids, house full of kids, probably no individual positive attention. For a family of this size, they would probably be eligible for almost $2000 in Food Stamps and WIC to buy formula for the babies. If people really want to help out, they should mentor these children and serve as godparents.

Sam said...This is just so messed up! I don't know what the hell goes through this dumb... No... Stupid! woman's mind. She clearly has to have some kind of mental problem to put herself and her parents through this nightmare of children with really no means of support other than welfare. You know, in this society if you want a dog you have to apply for a license but it seems we'll let any jack ass with half a brain have a kid. If you want to buy a gun you have to have a background check to make sure you're not some nut bar. But if you want a kid all you have to do is find a willing partner and there you go...You have a kid! Makes no difference if you have the means to raise these kids or not. Nor if you even have a half a brain cell or a clear mental capacity to do a half way right job in raising these kids. Someone really needs to be penalized for letting this mental case bring all these children into this world. These poor poor kids they're in for a world of hurt with this woman for a mother.

Tammie said..."This is a case where..." you know nothing solid about the case yet, except that this woman had 8 kids. The rest at this point is probably some false reporting along with some real, unfortunately we do not know which is which yet. Probably a lot of rumor. Yet, based on things you do not yet know to be true or false you want to take her...what was it you said? Her 12 kids?? See the press is reporting she already had 6 & just recently delivered 8 more. That makes FOURTEEN-14!! Not 12. It is, however, a good example of how these untruths can so easily (& accidently) get started. Must we judge her & as you say, take all 12 kids away right NOW or can we maybe let the dust settle & find out what's true, false &/or rumor??

Di said...I think that this was a strategic move on her part to get her husband back, maybe he loves his little girls and if she were to get pregnant again with a girl he would come home and all would be well. It sounds like the father didn't want anything to do with her and their children so why did he provide his sperm for her to have another child? They only know the answers to these questions.
Lots of doctors use 8-10 embryos to ensure a pregnancy will occur. No one but God knew that all 8 would take. This is a blessing, Those children are blessings. Never think that a life is not a blessing given to us by God. We may not know his plan right now but it will appear when it is his time. God never gives up more than we can handle. I believe that she will be okay and her children will also be okay. Who gave you all the right to judge? Only God can judge us. Why don't you use the energy you have with all the negative thoughts and think of ways to help this young woman with what she has been given....blessings....eight of them...along with the 6 others!!

I realize the Docs can't police the stupidity of how many children one has, but they could refuse to do the procedure based on medical ethics. I am truly disgusted, and what a suprise. Her parents filed bankruptcy, they purposley kept her name quiet because they knew what the reaction would be by most of us, and guess who's gonna be paying for all those children with no father? You got it sportsfans, WE WILL! Just sickening. She'd get my vote for involuntary sterilization, I'd hold her down while they did it! UGH!

In that case why should anyone help them. What kind of people are these? No wonder they filed for bankruptcy. That way we could all keep them and they have no responsibilities. And their will be people out there donating things to these ignorant, uneducated people. It's a shame that the babies have to suffer but then don't we all for her stupidity. I'm sick and tired of keeping ignorant people.
Let the Dr. keep her and her kids. They're all idiots.

Tammie said...Much of this story sounds like possible rumors to me. If the parents filed bankruptcy last year & she is a single Mom with six kids then who the he'll paid for the fertility treatments. Although I don't know much about welfare, I do know that since welfare reform was passed, one can collect welfare for a total of five 5 years & ONLY five 5 years! Whether it be 5 years in a row or 2 years here & 3 years several years later. She may have already used her Lifetime Total of 5 years ok the 6 kids she already had. I guess my point is, we are all (including me, unfortunately) before we are sure we have the entire, TRUE story. Before anyone says, "jail her", they should be willing to be Foster Parent(s) to her 14 kids while she is serving her sentence. Sending her away will hurt the children. PS I think the exception to the 5 year welfare cap/limit is Food Stamps so children (& adults, I guess) don't starve. PSS Give it some time to "get out/come out" in the press & I'll bet you there is, infact more (&more accurate) facts to this story.

Tammie said...I just read (in the MN Star Tribune) that this woman (apparently her name is Nayda) has "always wanted to be nothing but a Mother" & "wanted just one more girl". They were quoting her Mother (the Grandmother). She also said, when asked what her plans were when the babies came home, that she was leaving (I think leaving town). Her husband, the Grandfather, has already left town. He apparently went back to his home country of Iran (I think it was Iran, not positive, but it can be found on the MN Star Tribune's page) to try & earn money. Medical professionals apparently offered to abort some of the 8; the Mother refused. This is sounding pretty similar to the Gosselin's (Jon&Kate+8). They wanted "just one more" and Doctors also offered to abort some of the 6 & they refused. There are definste similarities. They didn't receive this much critisism, but that could be because there are two of them raising the kids &/or because they only had twins (2) versus already having 6. Everyone seems to want to punish her. Take away all of her kids, don't give her any assistance, send her to jail, sterilize her, etc. We really don't have the whole stoy yet or know what is fact or rumor; I don't even think the Mother of the babies, herself has been interviewed yet. Y'all sound like an angry mob ready to hang someone without a trial. Think about this logically. If she is living with her parents on a 1,500 at house & 6 kids, has no husband or father of the children then chances are she had/has little to no income. So who, may I ask, paid for fertility treatments? Certainly not welfare! See? Somethings wrong with this story. There is either more to it or more truth to it. So, just in case - maybe you could wait a day or so & see, before you tar & feather this woman???

Octuplet Mom Looks for TV Career as Child Expert
Filed under: In the news
New mom of octuplets Nadya Suleman, whose own mother says her daughter may have a serious mental problem, is eager to dispense her best child-rearing advice. The 33-year-old single mother of 14 offered Oprah Winfrey and Diane Sawyer the opportunity to tap her parental wisdom for the low, low price of $2 million. She allegedly hopes to parlay her famous fertility into a career in reality TV, la Jon and Kate Gosselin.
Pardon my exasperated language, but what a f***ing shock! Who didn't see this coming! Hopefully, she's been ridiculed enough by the public for her, by far, indecent human behavior and will most certainly be denied the "fame and fortune" she so desperately seeks at our over-worked and over-taxed expense. It must be wonderful to live in such blissful ignorance... She deserves nothing more than a free pack of diapers from the hospital, if that. Oh please send me your comments on this one!

PeggyT said...Yes. We are all pretty upset about this woman having 8 more children with 6 others still at home. It is ridiculous, I know. However, what has been done is done and there's nothing we can do to stop it now. If Oprah wants to give her a lot of money for an interview, then let her do it. It would be less of a tax burden on the rest of us. Nanya is in all her glory right now but, the toll of having so many children will be overwhelming to her and her parents and morst of all, her kids' mental well-being.

Carol said...I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately. Even if the donated sperm was a friends wouldn't you think that she would have to pay the Doctor that implanted it? Hmmmmm, wonder where she got the money for that? Then again being that she worked in that field perhaps the Doctor did it for free? It is my opinion that she could not be denied because of discrimination(a word that has gone to far). If that be the case I don't think that the taxpayers should have to pay for these children. Hopefully the Doctor will be responsible for that, if not, that Doctor (if there even was one) should be disiplined.

FJ said...This woman is an OPPORTUNIST who is using a sacred act, CREATING LIFE, for the sole purpose of the very media that is feeding her obviously laxed ego. She has SERIOUS psychological problems, as do her parents AND the sick doctors who irresponsibly implanted at least EIGHT INV EMBRYO's...I believe these children, even the six previous, are in great danger from these "PREDATORS" who are WHORING INV FERTILIZATION as a true THREAT to the American Family AND TAXPAYER. CPS should be all over this, all FOURTEEN should be removed and given to families who wish only to give them normal lives and NOT exploit them; we've seen this before folks. Lastly, THESE WITCH-DOCTORS, should be censured by the AMA and STRICT GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES need to be enacted to ensure that no act of LIFE CREATION, and the lives CREATED, be for any other reason than to raise a family and NOT exploitation at the sake of the baby's that are born. This is a SHAMEFUL act from a SICK woman, supported by SICK PARENTS, SICK DOCTORS and SICK TAXPAYERS who will be footing the bill for these media-tramps; TIME for a RETHINKING of mental evaluations of the people who receive INV Treatment and their relative economic ability to support such births. Would WE accept handing 14 kids in an adoption center over to this woman and her family? I would DARE say NEVER....Oh, by the way, the MEDIA should shun and IGNORE these fools any further and let the AUTHORITIES take care of all involved....amen to the death of ignorance someday, but NOT today it sadly seems....sadly for those baby's sakes...
