The young girl shocked citizens of her native Yemen last year after she walked out on her arranged marriage to a motorcycle delivery man more than 30 years her senior. Nujood's father married her off to the man for a dowry of $250, and for two months she begged her husband every day to return her to her family.
He refused, and so Nujood took matters into her own hands. One afternoon when her mother sent her on an errand, Nujood took a bus into the crowded capital city of Sanaa. She then hailed a taxi to the courthouse. Not knowing what else to do, she sat on a bench outside a courtroom all day, until a judge noticed her lingering in the empty hallway. He asked what she needed, and the girl said simply, "I came for a divorce."Horrified by the details Nujood revealed, the judge took her home to play with his own 8-year-old daughter. Two days later, he granted her a divorce, making her (at least at that time) the world's youngest divorcée. Her ordeal prompted Yemen's lawmakers to increase the age of consent for marriage from 15 to 18.
Two girls, ages 9 and 12, have since sued for divorce. But Nujood's influence is extending far beyond the borders of her homeland; an 8-year-old Saudi Arabian girl recently sued for divorce and won. Nujood hopes to inspire a broad movement of girls to fight their child marriages, adding that "they should not be scared of their fathers or husbands."
When asked what she plans for the years ahead, she answered: "I want to be a lawyer." She added that she "no longer thinks about marriage" and has no desire to wed again.Nujood also hopes to advocate for women's rights in Yemen, and her visit to Paris included a meeting with France's Human Rights Minister, Rama Yada, and Urban Affairs Minister Fadela Amara, with whom she discussed the problem of child marriage.
How tragic is it that this advice is coming from the mouth of a girl who has yet to reach age 12? Here in the United States we talk about protracted adolescence and the boomerang generation, while young girls around the world are forced to deal with situations most adults cannot handle.
And Nujood's ordeal isn't over, despite the glamorous outcome of her tale. She still risks retribution for her courageous act from the male members of her family, and both her father and her ex-husband were released from custody only 10 days after being arrested.
Dad says he only set the marriage up to protect his daughter from violence on the streets, but I find that hard to swallow, particularly considering the violence she suffered at the hands of her husband. And just where was her mother in all of this?
The whole story is despicable. My own daughter is just six years younger than Nujood. How could any parent even consider such a thing? Should cultural traditions that harm children, no matter how ingrained, be eradicated? What do you think?

Former sailor said...It's common knowledge that Barack Obama, speaking to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund in 2007, vowed: "The first thing I'd do as president is, is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. That's the first thing I'd do."
As Melinda Henneberger, of Slate.com, Posted on Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, "While there is strenuous debate among legal experts on the matter, many believe the act would invalidate the freedom-of-conscience laws on the books in 46 states. These are the laws that allow Catholic hospitals and health providers that receive public funds through Medicaid and Medicare to opt out of performing abortions."
When you take these facts into account, along with the recent California Supreme Court ruling against two physicians who refused, on moral grounds, to artificially inseminate a lesbian (because there would be no father in the home), it becomes obvious that, rather than the rights of the mother, the rights of all pro-life physicians and other health care workers are in danger of being stripped away. If the California doctors can be required, against their own religious/moral beliefs, to perform that procedure, under those circumstances, then they're only one step away from requiring that all physicians be required to perform abortions, including (completely unnecessary and barbaric) partial-birth abortions. And once California has that law in place, it's only one more step to make that the law throughout the country.
The President has not only made this vow to provide abortions for anyone who wants them, at any time, for any reason, he repeatedly, when in the Illinois Senate, blocked all attempts to pass legislation requiring immediate medical care for all surviving babies from "born-alive abortions." During his Presidential campaign, he tried, unsuccessfully, to cover that up with "misstatements" about his reasons for blocking said legislation, but the truth eventually came out, and he had to do some quick backtracking, in an unsuccessful attempt to cover his tracks.

But WND's earlier report showed that the two laws, were, in fact, almost identical, and Obama had voted to include in the state law the type of "neutrality" clause found in the federal law in the state law.: Asked at what point does a baby get human rights, he declined to admit even that individuals are vested with such rights when they are born."Well, I think that whether you are looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity, you know, is above my pay grade," he said." "...urged Obama to reread his own book, "The Audacity of Hope," to find a good answer to Warren's question:" "[T]he essential idea behind the Declaration – that we are born into this world free, all of us; that each of us arrives with a bundle of rights that can't be taken away by any person or any state without just cause; that through our own agency we can, and must, make of our lives what we will – is one that every American understands," Obama wrote. - Huh?

Narcissistic disorder: self-centered, seek attention and praise, take advantage of people, fantasize about success and power, expect favorable treatment, exaggerate achievements, have difficulty maintaining long-lasting relationships, expect others to recognize them as being superior.

THE Reverend Colonel said...WAKE UP EVERYONE! If you don't think this kind of stuff goes on in the USA, please read this whole story! This is a true story about a PEDOPHILE I turned into the Authorities in Irving Texas.
There is a warrant out for the arrest of Edward Steven Reinstein for possesion and distribution of CHILD PORNOGRAPHY. The warrant was issued a few days before Dec. 25th, 2008.
I found a CD with Edward Reinsteind handwriting on it that he had burned with graphic pictures of children younger than a year old being sexually abused and raped by adults.
There was a picture of him flashing posted on My Space. He was heard on the air on the Ticket radio station in Dallas Texas. Edward has since shaved his beard and cut his hair, and HE IS STILL WORKING PROMOTIONS EVENTS FOR THE TICKET!
I actually heard Edward Reinstein talking on the radio WHILE HE HAS A WARRANT OUT FOR HIS ARREST! believe it or not, they were applauding this PERVERT and PEDOPHILE on the Dallas radio station The TICKET - KTCK 1310, which is currently owned by CUMULUS Radio.

Grateful Gif: Or how Ed wanted to be more ‘animated’…
Posted on 18 January 2009 - Blame this person -> mastermind
"So, I felt kinda bad for Grateful Ed… All the old man wanted was a damned animated gif and someone has to go and put his dingus up for the whole MySpace tweener community to see. I think To Catch a Predator just added one more name to the list… “Are you GratefulEd1310KTCK? And did you say ‘I wanted an animated gif of me in the nude?’”
‘But it can’t be all that bad…’ I thought to myself and immediately went to work on making this situation into a positive one… for everyone involved. So here is my open letter -
Mr. Grateful Ed,
I feel your pain and you got screwed… this time not in a good way. So as a representative of theunticket.com, I have taken it upon myself to give you the simple thing you wanted… An animated gif. It is not up to me, nor the staff of KTCK to judge the beauty of a nude man… no matter how creepy or old - we all have been there in front of the camera with our bits exposed for the world to see. With that being said, please accept our animated gif as a token of our pity and appreciation.
Take care.

You mentioned that he has a warrant for his arrest, yet, he’s not listed in the sex offenders database for all of Texas.
He’s also not listed in the Dallas warrant database. I then checked with the city of Irving and there is also no warrant with their office.
Unless you can qualify your comments, I’ll chalk this up to nothing but a smear campaign. Maybe you’re the person who hacked his myspace??

Excuse me, are you blind? The flashing pictures that you posted here of Grateful Ed is an obvious VIOLATION OF THE INDECENT EXPOSURE LAW because of the facts right in front of your eyes!
FACT #1: GRATEFUL ED IS FLASHING HIS PRIVATE PARTS ! FACT #2: HE IS OBVIOUSLY OUTSIDE IN BROAD DAYLIGHT! FACT #3. THIS PICTURE WAS TAKEN IN HIS BACK YARD BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN THERE! FACT #4. HIS HOUSE IS DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET FROM A PUBLIC GRADE SCHOOL!
This is by far too serious a charge to be making against anyone without absolute positive proof! I would not be accusing Grateful Ed of anything if I had not seen the evidence with my own two eyes.
JUST THE FACTS: I saw the warrant for his arrest. I am not lying about this, the name on the Warrant and I swear to GOD that it said Edward Steven Reinstein.
The Irving Police Department Detective that was assigned to this case is working on it. I am not going to post his name here, but I will send that info to you via e-mail.
Maybe Grateful Ed isn't on the sex offender's database because they just haven't caught him and prosecuted him yet!
I am not sure what is going on with the case, but the last time I received an e-mail from the Detective, there was still a warrant out for his arrest and as far as I know they were still looking for Grateful Ed.
Would you like me to sed you a copy of the emails I have received from Grateful Ed and that I forwarded to the Detective assigned to this case?
Would you like me to send you a copy of the emails that the Detective sent to me?
Would that help prove to you that I am not lying about any of this?
There was a lot of evidence they removed from Edward Reinstein's house. I was there when the police raided the house.
I sat out front and smoked cigars when the bust went down. I watched when they brought in a large number of Police men and women wearing rubber gloves, and they were armed with a whole lot of empty boxes and evidence tape to seal them!
I personally let them in to search Grateful Ed's house.
I watched as they boxed up and confiscated Grateful Ed's computer, 3 external hard drives, and boxes full of his burned cd's, and video tapes.
I watched them pack it all ito a Police Van and before they left, they handed me a certified copy the Search Warrant AND the Warrant that they had issued for Grateful Ed's arrest. As far as I know that copy of the warrant is still in his house.
I saw the CD with Ed's handwriting on it, that he had labled "NEW RADIO SHOWS". That is why the Police had a Search Warrant and why they raided the house. There was no "NEW RADIO SHOWS" anywhere on that CD, there was nothing but porn and there was something else on it that no real human being shoud ever have to see! This was not normal everyday porn, some of what I saw was really wierd stuff.
The CD started off with GI Jane and her friend taking their tops off and replacing them with some shaving cream, girls flashing, boob shots, unusual objects being inserted into certain places that were never meant for those objects to be inserted, etc...
There was stuff on that CD that Grateful Ed more than likely took with his digital camera of girls peeing in men's rooms, sinks, behind bushes, etc....For all I know he took all of the pictures on that CD!
I definately recognized one of Ed's favorite strippers in one of the "girl's peeing" pictures. I think that stripper is the same one that has "EDWARD" tattooed right above the crack of her ass!
Ed had a lot of pictures of the same stripper from the Monday night "Bikini Contest" that Ed worked at for with The Bone. The contest was held every Monday night with Alexis at The Big Apple in Arlington.
The same stripper I saw on the porn CD was in a lot of pictures Ed took on those Monday nights he was "supposed" to be working. I have seen Grateful Ed in action at that Bikini Contest! WORKING MY ASS!
What a laugh! Grateful Ed was too busy getting drunk and taking as many pictures and video of the strippers as he could get. Besides that,
I know for a fact that he was getting the waitresses at The Big Apple to sneak him booze so he could drink on the job, because he told me himself that they were sneaking him booze!
The children being raped and abused that were pictured in the middle of the CD Ed burned were not pretty. and no decent human being should have pictures like what I saw in their possesion.
What I saw was definately child pornography, as some of the victims in the pictures I saw were infants, there were pictures of babies being raped!
Edward Steven Reinstein is a PEDOPHILE, and a PREDATOR who trades CHILD PORN with other perverts, just like kids trade baseball cards!
Anyone who gets their rocks off from seeing little children being sexually assaulted by adults is so sick and twisted, they really don't deserve any kindness, consideration, help, or pity from anyone!
Peace out. THE Reverend Colonel

But do not think that this is something the country endorses -- look how the judge was disgusted and helped the girl. even in Saudi Arabia they are hearing the cases of young girls. In some countries the courts are less likely to get involved in "family matters" but nowhere is this really part of an old cultural tradition. The old guys that want to abuse children just want us to think that. So, though it can be complicated to get involved in another countries laws and traditions -- this is not really part of anybody's tradition. It's just plain abuse.

Blanket terms hurt, and assuming that "all Muslims" or even "all Arabs" are this way is easy...feels good, sure, to believe one large group is a singular problem...but it isn't fair to a group made up of individuals. Until recently, in Europe (and no comments here about "the French", blanket term again) we as Americans carried a strong reputation of being pigheaded jerks, due to the actions of leaders who refused to listen to any but themselves. This was and is, of course, unfair. I mean, look at the French classification - they supported us in Afghanistan... but they did not support us in invading Iraq and suddenly they're surrender-happy and cowardly? There are people in the Muslim world who are trying to right the wrongs of the Muslim world. There need to be people in every society, culture and country who do so. There must be Americans who right the wrongs - from poverty to pitifully young arranged marriages - that do happen, every day, here in our own blessed America. Whatever country you hail from, you would love to believe you live in a great one. If you want it to be great, go out and make it so. Bravo to this girl and this judge. And bravo to all who step up and make changes - don't look at it as a problem of millions of people and, thus, nothing with which you, one person, can help - pick one person. One small group. Make them your priority and do something. Now.

Joy D. Brower said...I am grateful that a break-through of some sort has occurred in the mainstream media (MSM) by even mentioning and detailing this appalling story!! God bless the judge who saved her - and God protect her from the evil that is Radical Islam! However, there is one sad & glaring omission: In all of the comments posted so far, I have not seen those two words - Radical Islam - which is at the core of this world-wide evil - and which we are now fighting in Afghanistan and almost on the verge of doing so in Waziristan, that dangerous and backward area of Pakistan that is a major safety zone for Al-Qaeda.
The other two words, also missing, but under whose evil rule these inhuman practices continue to flourish in the world of Radical Islam, are "Sharia Law." And we think it exists and flourishes only in those Middle Eastern and backward countries of Arabia? Think again!! It is predicted that within 2 or 3 generations, the majority population of Europe will be Muslim; and among those, a dangerously high percentage live apart from the rest of their respective societies and practice Sharia law. In fact, they are loudly demanding that Sharia courts be allowed jurisdiction along side British courts (in the UK, for example) in some areas of civil and domestic life.
And guess what's happening here in the USA? The same thing, but at a slower pace, as the percentage Muslim population is much lower than in the countries of Europe. But gradually they are becoming more vocal and demanding - as, for example, during the recent demonstrations in some larger American cities, when large numbers of Arab and Muslim Americans marched and in many cases became verbally rude and even physically abusive when confronted by others (American Jews & Christians) marching in support of Israel during the recent Israeli-Hamas war in Gaza. Video footage and many photos taken at these various demonstrations show how dangerous the situation has become - and seems a deadly harbinger of things to come. In other words, we here in the USA are NOT immune to the demands of Radical Islamicists who seek the establishment/imposition of Sharia law here in the States, and, eventually (but only in their insane dreams at this point, thank God!) the subjugation of the entire society to a fantasized Caliphate.
To many people, I probably sound like a nut job, but people wiser and more learned in this area than I are making these very same prognostications. After all, who would have thought that a generation or two ago that the first wave of immigrants from Turkey into West Germany, the "gaustarbeiten" ("guest workers") would grow into a flood - and not only in Germany, but in all the other Western European countries as well. And now these countries are reaping the fruits of those misguided policies and the unintended consequences of social engineering (and the source, of course, of cheap labor in countries experiencing great economic growth at the time).
By the way, if & when that that poor little girl who was so terribly abused returns to Yemen, her chances of NOT being stoned to death are very slim. She defied her father and her husband, thereby "dishonoring" the family. The mother (and other members of the family) all bow to the will of the so-called "man of the house" (the father & husband) and are often complicit in these insane arrangements - even when the "men" perform the "honor killing," which is this poor girl's fate unless she is in protective custody (and even that is no guarantee). These 7th Century cretins circle the wagons and work together to defend their "honor." Of course, they have absolutely no concept of the true meaning of that word.
