Burger King Ad Inappropriate for Kids?
The ad is actually pushing a new Sponge Bob kid's meal, but some parents aren't buying it. "It was funny at first, but it is a little graphic for kids," says Kassandra Jackson, a mom in Boise, Idaho.
I've watched it several times now and the only thing I can find to complain about is the fact that the King is rapping about squares when the shapes are actually rectangles. Other than that, I think I am too confused to be offended.
Dangerous Toys
The New Easy Bake Oven
New, and unfortunately not-so-improved, the oven caused 77 burns, 16 of them second or third-degree, and one that resulted in a partial finger amputation.
CPSC
Aquadots
When you add water to these little plastic balls, the coating produces effects similar to GHB -- the date rape drug. Pleasant. Thankfully they were recalled.

Lead paint
Speaking of things you shouldn't put in your mouth, how about any toy from China? Hundreds have been recalled thanks to the high levels of lead in the paint used to coat these toys

Magnetic toys
Particularly magnets that are small enough to swallow. When positive and negative magnets are floating around your digestive tract, they're drawn to one another, which can do some serious, life-threatening damage.

Snack time Cabbage Patch
This little doll was so hungry, it had a habit of chewing little kids' fingers, hair, and whatever else was unfortunate enough to get stuck in its mouth. It was quickly recalled.

Mini-hammock
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission: "the mini-hammock can twist around a child's neck as he/she is getting into or out of the mini-hammock, resulting in strangulation and death." All 3 million were recalled.

Lawn Darts
These have been banned for years in the US, as they had a tendency to wind up stuck in kids, not the ground.

Johnny Reb Cannon
This bad boy fired plastic cannon balls up to 35 feet. Even a pellet gun would be less dangerous -- at least you can aim a gun.

Good thing this atomic energy set only came with "very low-level" radioactive sources, because that's not dangerous. Oh wait -- yes, yes it is.

Water Yo-Yo Balls
Speaking of getting strangled to death, these yo-yo balls came under scrutiny after the stringy cord got wrapped around children's necks. They've been banned in Illinois, but have yet to be recalled by the CPSC.

NADA!!!! just some foolish nonsense I don't even get the whole commercial I just looked and shook my head and said what will they come up with next? Jack said...I have for a long time thought that the advertising agency that does Burger King commercials should be fired. They have the worst commercials I have witnessed and were it not for the Whopper, I would not return to Burger King. Get aqnother agency Burger King. Then again, the executives that are buying all this garbage shoud be dispensed with also. Burger King used to be my favorite. They have really messed it up.

just me said...Jacki, you say you don't have kids, but you can relate what goes on in a spongebob cartoon? Do you realize that the same "violent, senseless behavior" was first marketed on Loony Tunes? Or did you forget the RoadRunner/Coyote episodes, where that coyote did everything he could to blow himself up catching the roadrunner? How about Yosemite Sam? Or Elmer Fudd, and the "Kill the Wabbit" opera?
Good Lord, people! If you want to take offense to every little thing that happens on this earth, you are going to have wasted, wasted lives. The better decision may, I say, Jusy May Be...Wait for it...providing a strong, solid parenting base and discussing things with your kids more! If you feel an ad is inappropriate, tell them why. If you feel a person is acting/dressing inappropriately, explain to your children why! And, provide some good, solid discipline, for God's sake!
Kids/teens/young adults of today are the ones who were raised during the "it's inappropriate to discipline your kids" era, thus giving them the impression that they are always right, always get what they want, etc. IT WAS NOT TELEVISION THAT SCREWED UP THESE KIDS, BUT LACKADASICAL PARENTS.
As always, if you don't like what you see on tv, TURN IT OFF! Better for you anyway, if you do

However, if you've ever studied advertising you will know the whole point of why certain ads are developed and marketed to the public. The whole intent of advertising is to get the audience to remember what company the ad is for. So in essence...even if the ad is offensive, you remember the ad is for Burger King...right?!? So, the company that developed the ad did there job in creating an ad that promotes an ad for Burger King. Whether or not the ad is offensive, inappropriate, or funny is debateable and purely the opinion of the viewer. And...on another note "most" cartoons are strange and have been weird throughout television history...Smurfs, Scooby Doo, Bugs Bunny, Teletubbies...come on now...as long as they ful-fill their entertainment value in small doses and they get a good laugh out of our children, then that's all that matters. If you are really concerned about how your current or future children turn out, that's up to you and how you raise them...it's not the television's fault or resposibility....

No TV here said...I am a teacher and I have two girls 6 and 9 luckily I made the decision three years ago to do without television in my home. I find this ad and most television to be, not only an insult to my intelligence but, a major factor in the decline of the social and moral values of our society. I believe every person has a choice: invite it into your homes and reap the consequence or kick it out and reap the benefits. I also abhor fast food so the Burger King will have to search else where for children to corrupt

Lacy said...Attacking sponge bob? really? This is what happens when bored moms have too much time on their hands and this is where censors come from. I don't think that absolutely everything a child ingests media and otherwise always have to be educational. They are kids for god's sake!! Me and my kids think it's hilarious and so far neither of us have shot anybody.
You can shelter your children from all things borderline taboo or non educational or what you find violent, but the fact of the matter is, is that all those things will still be there when they shut off the TV and walk out their front door.
I think the ad is harmless and hilarious, as is Sponge Bob.

What a ridiculous commercial, not only for adults, but to think it is specifically directed toward children! The commercial made absolutely no sense and is NOT appropriate.
I'm teaching my grandchildren to grow up and live right, and that does NOT include learning how to shake their booty to promote some hamburger joint.
Nope. No more Burger King for me.

Chris said...Just for the record, I am not a Burger King fan or a fan of Sponge Bob. However, the ad in itself is not that bad. To address a comment in regards to why is the King rapping about squares when SpongBob is a rectangle, well if you remember anything at all about math and geometric shapes, you would know that a square is a special rectangle. I am a teacher so I know.
