Burger King Ad Inappropriate for Kids?
The ad is actually pushing a new Sponge Bob kid's meal, but some parents aren't buying it. "It was funny at first, but it is a little graphic for kids," says Kassandra Jackson, a mom in Boise, Idaho.
I've watched it several times now and the only thing I can find to complain about is the fact that the King is rapping about squares when the shapes are actually rectangles. Other than that, I think I am too confused to be offended.

The New Easy Bake Oven
New, and unfortunately not-so-improved, the oven caused 77 burns, 16 of them second or third-degree, and one that resulted in a partial finger amputation.

Aquadots
When you add water to these little plastic balls, the coating produces effects similar to GHB -- the date rape drug. Pleasant. Thankfully they were recalled.

Speaking of things you shouldn't put in your mouth, how about any toy from China? Hundreds have been recalled thanks to the high levels of lead in the paint used to coat these toys

Magnetic toys
Particularly magnets that are small enough to swallow. When positive and negative magnets are floating around your digestive tract, they're drawn to one another, which can do some serious, life-threatening damage.

Snack time Cabbage Patch
This little doll was so hungry, it had a habit of chewing little kids' fingers, hair, and whatever else was unfortunate enough to get stuck in its mouth. It was quickly recalled.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission: "the mini-hammock can twist around a child's neck as he/she is getting into or out of the mini-hammock, resulting in strangulation and death." All 3 million were recalled.

Speaking of getting strangled to death, these yo-yo balls came under scrutiny after the stringy cord got wrapped around children's necks. They've been banned in Illinois, but have yet to be recalled by the CPSC.

Chris said...It's funny.... he just made more $$$ letting them use his song for this commercial than you'll make in your whole lifetime. If that's what happens to "one-hit-wonders", then sign me up.... besides... he actually came out with 3 different #1 songs over 3 years. He also had 2 albums go triple platinum. Way to go Jacki.... make sure you have your facts straight before you criticize someone. Just because you only heard one of his songs doesnt mean it's his only one...

I bet you were talking out of your hat the whole commercial and missed that they had been changed to include square bottomed references. Hilarious!
Oh, and you folks that say that you won't go to Burger King because of this; GOOD RIDDANCE, YOU CANT DRIVE NOR THINK!

Jacki said...Ha ha ha. Actually way to go you guys. Sticking up for your friend Sir-Mix-Alot. He obviously is the epitome of cool now that he's re-writing the lyrics to a 15 year old song to incorporate SPONGEBOB. Stupid.

June said...No more Burger King for this grandmother. In addition, have you seen the raunchy Hardee's ad about "more than meat." We certainly should return to some sort of censurship if the companies won't edit their off the wall advertising. These burger companies are certainly aware of the fact that children are seeing these ads. Are they family businesses or what? My grandchildren will go to different places with me.

gobigblu69 said...To begin with, it's censOrship. Yeah, that's the kind of world I want to live in. If you don't like it turn it off. Why do you need someone to police the television for you. You should know what your kids are watching and be able to make responsible decisions for you and your family. I do agree kids shouldn't see this stuff, but I also know what my kids are watching on television. To the person posting that Spongebob is violent and has no educational value, do you remember Tom and Jerry. That was a violent cartoon, as well as Popeye, Roadrunner and a bunch of other cartoons most of us grew up watching. Guess how many people I have shot or killed in my lifetime. ZERO!!! Good lord, you don't have to learn life's lessons from everything you watch.

And did you miss the mermaid with only her long locks of hair covering her ta-tas? When are we gonna get it? Stories abound everyday of sexual conduct by youngsters that outrage everyone, yet this crap is "freedom of speech: and commented on with the likes of, just don't watch. Well people DO watch and ARE influenced, and there IS a ripple effect. Sexual content is nothing new to BK ads, but do we have to do this to kids? And WHY would Sponge Bob folk go for this when theirs is one of the few programs NOT pandering to kids? This society is so lost and confused, and we do NOT protect our children.

Yolanda said...WOW!!!!!! The first time I saw the commercial I said WTF???? Now I have 4 year old twin daughters and also two 2 year old grandchildren WHO LOVE SPONGEBOB. They watch it every chance they get. When the commercial came on, we were all in front of the TV watching it, and our mouths were just open. We didn't no what to make of it. Children love music, but they didn't know what to make of it either. I said why on earth would they associate Sir Mix-A-Lot with Spongebob? I'm old enough to remember the controversy when this song came out and it was banned on MTV. It was in poor taste because children try to repeate everything they hear and see especially with a character they like. They could have done something a little better than this. Why rectangles in the girls butts? What does that have to do with a happy meal? Don't get it. I will just say,we will not buy this SpongeBob happy meal. And Denise I agree, the Burger King is wierd and creepy ugh POOR TASTE GUYS.............................

You all complaining about this commercial are a bunch of PRUDES. Do you think if you hide sex from your kids that they won't end up having it? Studies show that countries that are MORE open about SEX have less incidences of teen pregnancies and less abortions.
I really didn't even find the commercial to be anywhere near as sexual as the original song 'baby got back.' I thought it was funny, cute and clever. I'll be taking my 4 year old to BK to pick up some more cheapo Chinese Spongebob toys. She loves that Spongebob, and I have to admit I like it too.

I agree with you about the show itself being pretty funny and totally whacky but it's about the sponsorship of the commercial and Nickelodeon. I could care less about the BK spot in general but the fact that it's backed by a channel that caters to kids that bothers the rest of us.I have no doubt you're a great mom but as your daughter grows up, you maybe surprised how quickly you approach "Prudeville"!! Take care and thanks for your comment. Have a Happy Easter or Passover! Sincerely, Peg the Non-Prude--just PRUDENT.:}

yasalem said...P.S. There's a BK ad out for mini burgers that, although it doesn't feature that freakish masked character, it is DISGUSTING. I swear, BK hired porn specialists to tailor their ads. They say there's no such thing as bad publicity, but I hope BK loses enough business over all this trash that it hurts and they finally understand that some things are just not appropriate. That's the ONLY way these people will get it. BK is one of the few fast food places I can stand food-wise, but I will NOT be going there anymore. Anybody listening? Call or write your local BK office, and HQ, for that matter--really make your point!

I do not like the commercial. I think it is raunchy. I have to agree with you. These companies dwell on the 'sex sells' advertising. They should to try some wholesome advertising, when it comes to kids. I banned BK a long time ago, due to poor service. This just put the icing on the cake!

Burger King was one of my favorite fast food joints, but it won't be any more... And I certainly won't be bringing any of my young friends there. We usually go quite often. As for the merits of the cartoon, it is assinine and repetitious, but probably not as ugly or vicious as some others. When lesser minds fail, they fall to their lowest level for attention.
